Two sisters conduct a modern-day investigation into a Victorian-era murder of a toddler and discover their grandmother was a key witness.
While researching her ancestry on the Internet one gloomy evening, Penny is astonished by what she finds. Urgently, she instructs her sister Sheelagh, "Search ’Slaidburn Suspected Child Murder!’ Now!" So begins a remarkable story within a story spanning more than a century.
In 1885 Yorkshire, sisters Grace and Isabella, accused of murdering Grace’s secret illegitimate toddler, were on trial for their lives. A sadly neglected two-year-old boy was dead following a failed attempt to lodge him at a workhouse. A tense and sensational trial followed in Victorian-era Leeds.
Sheelagh and Penny began keenly re-investigating these events. They feel personally involved because a prosecution witness at the murder trial, nine-year-old Margaret Isherwood, would later become their grandmother. The book grips us with dramatic events, but also touches us with the abiding loyalty of sisterhood, the desperate power of our need for love, and the crazy things that it can make us do.

History comes alive - a very cold case mystery plus personal insights
By SEC
This is a good read. I especially loved the dialogue the author gives the main characters. It's so natural and compelling, for a while I thought Whittaker must have unearthed the diaries of these real people.
The Slaidburn Angel is a gripping whodunnit based on the true story of author M. Sheelagh Whittaker's ancestors, who were accused of murdering a small child in 1855. In addition to the well-told tale of possible murder, the author has infused the book with her own very personal insights into sisterhood, mothers, step-mothers, children and husbands. She moves us easily from past to present, giving the story meaning right up to modern-day times. We also learn how Whittaker pursued her passion for understanding the past, a great example for anyone interested in learning about ancestry.
I suppose Whittaker does not have any more ancestors accused of murder - that would be too much to hope for - but I do hope she writes more books such as this.

The Slaidburn Angel
By F. Gildenhuys
The Slaidburn Angel is a real page-turner. That's not something normally applied to a book about genealogical sleuthing, but Whittaker's imaginative reconstruction of her ancestors' lives woven in with her research on uncovering just what happened to an illegitimate two-year-old makes for absorbing reading. Whittaker's style is engaging and her analysis of motivation is acute and sensitive.

A well written, murder mystery with a strong genealogical flavour
By William Perham
The story is real. It is very well researched and presented with nicely balanced pieces about the author and her present day family. The composition of chapters made it easy to read continuously or pick up and put down.
Characters are strong and well drawn and depict the harsh reality of living in rural England as the cotton industry was getting into full swing. The suspense of the murder mystery held me throughout.
This book is worth reading.
