During David Mataen's 13 years in financial services spanning commercial banking, stock brokerage, management consultancy and investment banking he has had the singular opportunity of becoming a scholar of African investing. His travels and tours of duty across the continent, though not to each and every corner, have allowed him to put his hand on the pulse and feel the heartbeat of African economies. Being born, bred and educated, and having worked in Africa grants David the luxury of being first witness to the comings and goings in the continent, especially its commerce and economics. In his two and a half years as a contributing columnist to Business Daily, a publication of the Nation Media Group, he wandered far and wide intellectually and picked up invaluable insights, broad perspectives and sound reflexes that have become a foundation for his analysis of business on the continent. Add to this his habits of extensive reading in finance and economics, and intense fascination with systems and their mechanics, which has favoured him the unique privilege of discovering just a little more of Africa's economic soul. David's travels outside of Africa gave him glimpses of a future Africa, when it grows up, and of what it has to do to reach that point. Above all, he is a hopeless romantic about the future and the intuitive signs of the future that appear in the course of ordinary life and business in the present. David is currently the head of Corporate Finance at Faida Investment Bank in Nairobi, Kenya.

David Mataen succinctly exposes the little known emergent side of Africa's economic landscape- his unique cultural insights have gone a long way to explaining a number of complex issues including land ownership and credit extension-

The book is aptly divided into three parts giving the subject an evolutionary perspective. Part I is largely historical in form, recounting the path and the attendant turns and twists which ultimately manifest in the demographic, cultural, social, government policy and financial system factors that have culminated in readying Africa for take-off. Part II dwells on the infrastructure deliberately put in place by both governments and private developers to ease access to resources and develop efficiencies necessary to exploit these resources. Finally, Part III focuses on the investment opportunities that are the product of this evolutionary process. The opportunities are sector-wide, touching on Manufacturing and Processing, Telecoms, Financial Services, Real Estate, Consumer Retail and Transport and Logistics.

This book is hugley useful to any investor; prospective or active who may be thinking start-up or expansion. The African economic landscape has finally come of age. Returning home from college to Tulsa for the summer, teenage Jim encounters wealthy, bohemian Adrienne, a distant acquaintance from high school, and falls in love. At the end of the summer, however, he returns to college and—perhaps improbably—loses touch with her. Five years later he receives an e-mail out of the blue that impulsively sends him back to Tulsa. Lytal’s first novel is dense with the maplike details of a specific place, the city of Tulsa, and also of the intricate geography of two young hearts. Taking himself very seriously, as young adults do, Jim is essentially humorless, as is Adrienne. And though the young man examines his relationship with Adrienne almost microscopically, the pair’s actions often seem arbitrary. Tulsa itself is a character in the novel but one that seems empty, the streets deserted and the city itself like a ghost town. A similar hollowness sometimes seems to infect the book itself. All this aside, however, it is beautifully written. Jim is an aspiring poet, and Lytal brings the same sensibility to his novel, making it, in the final analysis, a memorable reading experience. --Michael Cart

A coming of age love story

A Map of Tulsa is both a love story and a coming of age novel. The former is more successful than the latter.

Jim Praley is back in Tulsa for the summer, having finished his freshman year of college. He soon finds himself hanging out with Adrienne, the sexually adventurous daughter of a wealthy family. Having dropped out of high school, Adrienne wants to be an artist (an avocation Jim encourages by sharing the knowledge he gained in the art history class he took during his freshman year) or a singer.

Jim is an odd duck, sometimes too odd to believe. He tells us that buying condoms is an "embarrassment that was endemic to my heart." Apart from his questionable use of the word "endemic," this story isn't set in the 1950s when buyers had to ask a pharmacist for condoms that were kept behind the counter. I find it hard to believe he couldn't go to Target (his favorite store in Tulsa) and toss a package of condoms into his shopping cart without upsetting his heart. Jim can't take Adrienne to Target because Target reminds him of his childhood and he "kept certain parts of myself back," including -- for reasons I can't begin to fathom -- shopping at Target. Jim seems to think that's deep, but I thought it was a little silly.

Part one establishes Jim's relationship with Adrienne. Part two begins with Jim's return to Tulsa five years later. Adrienne's life has changed drastically, while Jim (despite living and working in New York) hasn't changed in any meaningful way. In a conventional coming of age novel, the protagonist makes a life-altering decision, faces a moral crisis, or in some other way loses innocence, gains wisdom, or takes a significant step toward maturity. True to the convention, Jim does learn something about himself in part two, although I'm not sure he's any more "adult" at the end of the novel than he was at the beginning. More significantly, he learns something about the meaning and nature of love, and that is the novel's strength.

Benjamin Lytal conveys honest emotion when he writes about Jim's feelings for Adrienne. In other respects, his prose is troubling. A writing style that seems determined to be witty or ironic or profound too often comes across as childish. I had the impression that Lytal was striving for the voice of an eloquent Holden Caulfield. The result is discordant and occasionally jarring. In his apparent determination to be literary, Lytal produces sentences like "She was unconscious, but her lips were grim and full of knowledge." Whatever does that mean? Her lips were ready to take their SATs? I was equally puzzled when, referring to the exhaust from cars on the highway, Jim says "I took in the fumes like sea air." Poisonous gasses are like sea air? Literary prose should seem effortless, while too many of Lytal's sentences are forced. He has some skill as a writer; I hope his next effort is more consistent.

Lytal makes some noteworthy observations about the nature of friendship, particularly the American tendency to abandon old friends and seek out new ones as we move on with our lives. Jim's reflections on his time with Adrienne seem genuine, although they're never as moving as Lytal must have intended them to be. I can't say that A Map of Tulsa is an entirely successful novel, but it has its moments. I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could.

Unique, witty, hard to forget

This is such an unusual, witty, sometimes wistful first novel by a writer with what seems a genuine poetic sensibility. Occasionally Lytal's style reminded me of Tom McCarthy's in Remainder--dry, arch, detached but somehow fervent at the same time. A Map of Tulsa also reminded me of Michael Chabon's Mysteries of Pittsburgh. There are strong similarities to Chabon in particular: the wry sense of humor, but a passionate desire too to be loved and understood. I can see many more books and more fame and eventually, awards coming to Lytal, as they did to Chabon.

The narrator, Jim Praley, falls in love with a more or less parentless heiress, Adrienne Booker, whose family owns and manages Booker Petroleum. They spend most of the summer between Jim's freshman and sophomore year at college together, and both are wary of expressing the depth of their feelings for each other - I loved that the sincerity of their attachment is revealed slowly and with such deftness. The second of the novel's two sections is a study in writerly restraint and skill - Lytal takes on large themes - love, mortality, art, identity and how it is tied to the place where one grows up and the people one first loves, often with frightening but enlivening ardor.

This is a remarkable and memorable novel. I look forward to reading Lytal's next book and hope not to have to wait too long.

I was engaged and entertained by Benjamin Lytal's debut novel, A Map of Tulsa. The friendship between Jim Praley and Adrienne Booker provides the backdrop for this coming of age story. Lytal addresses loss and grief in the novel in ways that seemed fresh and familiar at the same time. While I have never been to Tulsa, the geography of that place became so detailed and specific it was as if the place were another character in the novel. Readers who enjoy coming of age stories and are willing to take a chance on a debut novel are those most likely to enjoy this well-crafted work.

Caroline Self has studied Asian brush painting for 30 years. She holds a degree in art from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in art education and sculpture from San Diego State University. Susan Self studied art in college and on trips to Europe and Asia, often accompanying her mother. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from UC San Diego.

An excellent starting point

Chinese brush art is a special way of painting that uses ink, paper and imagination to create art, and beginners now have access to this thousand-year-old art form through a step-by-step guide that closely follows traditional Chinese methods. From simple materials painting traditional subjects with imagination, this is an excellent starting point recommended for any library where introductory painting in general is of interest, and Chinese art in particular is a focus.

About the Author
Hagi Kenaan teaches philosophy at Tel-Aviv University. In addition to studies in phenomenology, aesthetics and the philosophy of art, he is the author of The Present Personal: Philosophy and the Hidden Face of Language (Columbia University Press, 2005) and Emmanuel Levinas: Ethics as an Optics (Tel-Aviv, 2008). Ilit Ferber is Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Tel-Aviv University. She has published articles on Benjamin, Freud, Brecht and Herder. She recently completed a book manuscript entitled Melancholy and Philosophy: Walter Benjamin’s Early Writings , and her current research deals with the relationship between pain and theories of the origin of language in Rousseau, Herder, Freud, Benjamin and Wittgenstein.

I really enjoy the weird girls

What it's about: This is book one of the Weird Girls series and involves four sisters, who each has powers that are ... well, weird ... and the cause of a backfired curse. When one of the sisters accidentally blows up a vampire (vampires aren't aggressive in this series), they're going to have to figure out what's going on before things get crazier.

Why you should read it: This is a funny book. Seriously, I was laughing and enjoyed reading every page. Celia is complicated and caught between two dominant men, both on opposing sides of the war/issue/complication. The best part, though, to me was the interaction between the sisters. Each has her own personality and story, which makes the sisters witty and amazing individually and together. I'm looking forward to reading more of the Weird Girls and have put the series on my auto-buy list. If you're looking for fun, adventure, a messy love triangle and an awesome family, check out Sealed With a Curse.

Fantastic

The novel starts running right out the gate. And it doesn't give you much time to breathe and catch your breath.

Robson has a way of combining nonstop action and humor that manages not to wear you out. I mean, not only does it not wear you out, but it makes you hunger for more. And in a book about a hunger that destroys families and lives, it's both ironic and enjoyable.

The plot of Sealed isn't as straightforward as I thought it was going to be. I kept feeling like we were coming to the root of the problem, but glancing at my reading percentage I saw I wasn't near the end, so Robson kept me guessing. The guessing didn't frustrate me, and that's key. I like to be curious, not plagued by an incessant enigma.

I love each Wird sister for her own reasons, and Robson does a good job of showing her characters as a family, while still maintaining their personalities. I didn't get the "roll call" effect (where you feel like there are too many character vying for attention and you only remember them due to their name and one specific detail). I remembered the characters as people, like you should. And while I thought the pairing of the sisters with dates so quickly seemed too perfect and too cute, I still liked it. I don't know if that's because of Robson's style, because I thought each hunk was just that: a hunk, or if I was just so caught up in everything else in the book that it didn't matter. But either way--it didn't matter. Her characters are fun. And you can find something you like in someone from the crazy-ethereal-not-so-much-a-love-interest Misha to Gem--werewolf, Warrior, boyfriend and all around cool to Celia herself, who it's hard not to root for, `cause she's just such a bad-ass.

And the cast is diverse. There was so much great representation that I never once questioned the inclusive quality of Robson's universe. But how could I? The sisters themselves are of mixed race. The girls felt the strain of being the weird ones in more than one way. And Robson deals with that and many other moments deftly. I really like that in an amazing situation like a pregnant werewolf going berserk, Robson somehow makes the moment so human. I was impressed with her great way of tapping into real emotions for supernatural moments. Because they reflect the moments we all have. Brava.

My favorite part? The werewolves in the book are killer. They are killers. No, Warriors. And they're just so wicked. Huge beasts with the ability to heal so quickly that they do it before your eyes. Pack before anyone. Just...awesome. Have I mentioned I loved them? Oh. I loved them.

And if it's not clear at this point: I loved the book. It's just the shot of Urban Fantasy I needed, and if you're hankering, you should grab a copy.

Had some promise, but ultimately disappointing

"Sealed" is definitely not the worst paranormal romance book I've ever read. The writing, while somewhat juvenile, was fun enough that I stuck with the story. I liked the idea of four magic sisters, but felt that the author ultimately failed to explore and deliver on her own ideas. Here's why:

- Characterization. To say that all the characters in this book were painted in broad strokes would be an understatement. Calling them two-dimensional would be too charitable. Misha the Vampire is probably the only exception, but that's not saying much. Each sister might as well be named after a fairy tale dwarf: Grumpy, the second sister who only had two modes of communication: shouting obscenities, and shouting more obscenities in a louder voice; Dopey, the third sister who called everyone "Dude" (that was the extent of her personality); and Bashful, the fourth and youngest sister, who is described as timid and afraid through the whole book, yet she manages to save herself and her sisters on multiple occasions. Despite this, she is consistently treated as a half-witted coward by everyone around her. Aric, our main love interest, has two modes: bossy and protective. That is it. This is such a shame, because a more skilled author could have made the characters more complex and interesting. Same goes for the sisters' back story: there are vague references to past pain and suffering, but nothing concrete or with any kind of depth. Nothing that would add a much needed dimension.

- Plot holes and downright goofs. I found it hilarious that Aric, who lived for telling our heroine what to do and was very protective of her, failed to offer the sisters actual protection when it became clear that they were being targeted by the baddies. Instead of, I don't know, maybe posting a guard or two near their home and place of employment, Aric and his whole group of "Warriors" simply run off every time there is a text message of an enemy attack, leaving the sisters vulnerable to be attacked / lured into a trap / etc. The topic of holes and goofs brings me to my main gripe with this book. This is a plot device so cheesy, so juvenile and ridiculous, it was rejected by the tackiest and cheapest soap operas before getting snapped up by the author. I won't spoil it for you (hah!), but suffice it to say that the heroine learns something about Aric from a person who clearly and openly hates her, and instead of, I don't know, NOT believing this person, or asking Aric about it, she simply stops talking to him, deciding that their relationship is doomed. Even if actually talking to the person she supposedly wants to be with for the rest of her life in order to clear something up is NOT an option for our supposedly intelligent and mature heroine (bodes well for their future, eh?), then how about asking her sisters, who can't keep their mouths shut about ANYTHING EVER, to talk to their were boyfriends and find out if what she was told is the actual truth? No, our heroine doesn't want to bother. She'd rather suffer silently like an emo twelve year old. The heroine's defense of her idiotic behavior is that she has little experience with men. First of all, she has clearly dated, though not as much as her sisters. Second, this supposedly strong and bad ass character turns into weak mush whenever Aric is around, and becomes utterly pathetic. And third, this is basic human communication skills we're talking here. This one instance made me lose all respect for the heroine and the author herself. I now wonder why any man, let alone two, would be interested in this sniveling fool of a character, and I'm appalled that the author resorts to such cheap tactics to create some much needed romantic tension.

All in all, this book could have been much better. If you are someone who enjoys at least some complexity and emotional maturity in your characters (and I'm talking the bare minimum here), you need to look elsewhere. Same for character motivation and plot development. If you have any kind of standard for those things and a low threshold for juvenile stupidity, please save yourself some time and grief and try your luck with another book, for example, Molly Harper's Jane Jameson series. You still get plenty of banter, humor and family / relationship drama, but at least it's well written and acted out by people you can relate to.

Anita C. Donihue is a writer, teacher, and pastor's wife in Washington, whose When I'm on My Knees series has sold more than one million copies. She and her husband, Bob, have five grown sons.
