Laurence Raw has published extensively in the field of film adaptations and performance. He teaches in the Department of English at Baskent University, Ankara, Turkey.

Less about the actors, more about the roles.

I was annoyed with the misleading title. The book discusses the character roles the actors played and not really about the actors themselves. Several entries were inaccurate and I noticed a lot of lazy writing; "in his trilby hat and long coat, he cuts an imposing figure" seemed to appear everywhere. Shemp Howard (why was he even in here?) is twice described as having an "India rubber face". The choices as to who was to be covered , while most were very good reps of the genre, were weirdly off. Why George Burr Macannan, Guy Usher, Rosemary LaPlanche (only two movies), Irving Pichel (again, only two in the genre) and the afore mentioned Shemp Howard and not Morris Ankrum, Alison Hayes or Bruno VeSota??? The roles chosen for discussion were odd as well- in Henry Daniell's entry, three Sherlock Holmes films are mentioned, but only one character discussed, and Moriarty wasn't one of them- his best role in the series! Same with Lionel Atwill and not even mentioning his plum role as the Inspector in Son of Frankenstein. In summary, if you want to read about a selection of horror and sci-fi CHARACTERS, then this book is on track, but other than when and where they were born, there is very little biographical writing, regardless of the fact that the author had a treasure trove of reference material as stated in the bibliography. I would refer to those for better info.

Great compilation of "B" movie horror/sci fi stars

Readers should be impressed with the research conducted by author Laurence Raw for the creation of his book, "Character Actors in Horror and Science Fiction Films, 1930-1960". The book is a treat for film buffs, movie fans of the two genres, and Baby Boomers, in general. Raw's book details those recognizable faces, but unknown names, who starred in films that were major parts of the golden age of "B" movies.
Raw devotes about 1 and 1/2 pages to each actor and he highlights the horror/sci fi films that the actor is most remembered for. Getting their proper "due" are stars like, John Carradine, Marshall Thompson, Elisha Cook, Maria Ouspenskaya, Kenneth Tobey, Leslie Neilsen, Michael Rennie, Clayton Moore, Faith Domergue, and Peter Graves, just to mention a few.
A few editing gaffes and annoying personal interpretations of some films are the only things that detract from a great compilation of familiar faces from these genre films. The only other feature I would have liked to have seen in the book was more pictures of these actors & actresses in the films that Raw mentioned. As is it, Raw found a picture for everyone of the 96 entries in the book. Even the most casual movie buff will find him- or herself saying, "Oh yeah, I recognize that face.".
These minors criticisms aside, fans of the horror/sci fi genres will certainly enjoy the "trip down memory lane" that they will get from this book. For many of us, these were the films that we grew up with and the visit worth the time.

Great Aggregate for those trying to identify actors in B Movies

It's taken some time to give this great book a good read. Character Actors in Horror and Science Fiction Films, 1930-1960 aggregates a who's who of the various actors, some easily recognizable and others not, that inhabited the various genre films of that era. My initial approach was to do a quick scan at the photos and names to see who is in the book - there are many that I recognized, mostly from the photos - from various films. Next I started at the beginning - the book lists the actors alphabetically, and read each listing - this took a while. As you would imagine, reading a reference book can be less than interesting - I'm glad the author decided to provide only a synopsis of each actor.
Although I wouldn't consider this the ultimate "go to" book for any particular actor, it does provide one place to look to establish an actor's name with his appearance (photo + name + movie) so you can associate the three - very convenient, especially after watching a movie and during the rolling of the credits. I did notice a few minor editorial issues but they weren't too detracting. The author also provides a bit of opinion on many of the actors which may deter the reader if you don't like his style - personally it didn't bother me (who doesn't put his own spin on this type of book?).
In all, if you are a geek about this genre of film, you will enjoy this book and appreciate is as a reference.
