Rise (Nightshade), by Andrea Cremer

International bestselling author Andrea Cremer's sequel to Rift, a Nightshade novel.

Everything Conatus stands for is at risk. Hoping to gather enough resistance to save their order, Ember and Barrow attempt a desperate escape. But fate offers little mercy. When their mission is exposed, the couple faces relentless pursuit by the supernatural horrors that act on the commands of Eira’s ally: the mysterious Bosque Mar. A shocking revelation forces Ember out of hiding, sending her back into the heart of dark magic at Tearmunn keep, where she must convince her old friend Alistair of her love or face dire consequences.
Ember’s deception offers the only change for the resistance to succeed, but what she discovers in the shadows beneath the keep will shatter her world and bring about the Witches’ War.

"Popular paranormal motifs abound: the medieval setting, the looming demonic threat, the portal to the netherworld, battles and dark, secret catacombs, not to mention the beginnings of the werewolves. Interesting characters populate the pages, all designed to keep fans glued to the book."—Kirkus Reviews

From Booklist
Cremer returns to Nightshade’s prequel world with this fast-paced sequel to Rift (2012). Her trademarks—romantic sensuality, swift pace, and powerful magic accessible to humans—are here in full force. Sixteen-year-old Ember Morrow, who was training to be a Knight of Conatus, now juggles her attraction to handsome trainer Barrow with her need to gently dissuade ardent Alistair, a childhood friend who has long lusted after Ember. Lady Eira, who gained control of the Conatus compound Tearmunn by her pursuit of dark magic, now allows the nether world’s Lord Bosque Mar to seduce her. Readers who enjoyed the feisty warrior maidens of Rift may be dismayed that these women now rely primarily on their ability to manipulate men by conceding to seduction or pretending to be in love. Werewolf fans, however, will rejoice at Alistair’s grisly experiments, which result in Nightshade’s wolf shapeshifters. As the two series begin to bind together, they create a backstory for the Nightshade books that will please series fans. There’s at least one more title coming, judging from the cliff-hanger ending. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Plans for this fifth title in the New York Times best-selling Nightshade series include an impressive national consumer advertising campaign, and a presence at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books and Comic-Con International. Lacking some of the magic from the original Nightshade series
By Courtney @ Fuzzy.Coffee.Books
What I Liked: 1) Finally, finally, finally, we learn where the Guardians come from. And I was surprised to find the answer. Where it came from was completely not what I was expecting, even as I was halfway through Rise. But it was very settling to find out how Guardians came to be. 2) Ember's loyalty. You can't help but feel sorry for Ember because she is being torn in so many directions. She has a strong sense of loyalty that I appreciated in this book, and without it, I don't think the book would have been as good. It guided many of her decisions, despite the pain and anguish that she suffered because of them.

What I Didn't Like: I wish I was able to get into this prequel duo more. For as much as I loved the Nightshade Trilogy, these books seemed to be much less...emotional. Not emotional in the sense that it makes me cry or it's dramatic or anything. But where as in the Nightshade books I felt like I was right there with Calla and Co, I didn't feel that way with Ember and her friends. I think this is because Ember didn't give into the emotions the way that Calla did, they are different people after all. (Wow, I've failed big time at my "do not compare" policy). I think because Ember is from a long past time period, she has much different responses to certain emotions. This is a trend I've noticed about myself when it comes to historical fiction. Sometimes I struggle with them when they have reactions to things that I don't understand.

Overall Thoughts: I'm glad to finally find out where Calla and her packmates came from, and I was surprised by the ending, that it didn't turn out the way I was expecting. I personally wasn't able to relate with Ember very much. There are things about her that I appreciated, but my inability to personalize her made it challenging for me to get as deep into this story as I generally like to be. I think all fans of the Nightshade series should read this at least once, to get answers to the many questions we've had since first meeting Calla. I probably won't be re-reading it anytime soon, but I am thankful for the answers. I'm also looking forward to Andrea Cremer's next works, to see what she does outside the world of Keepers and Guardians.

Second Prequel to Nightshade
By Jessie Potts
What it's about: Rise is the second installment to the prequel series from the Nightshade world, and I recommend reading the first one, Rift, though these can be read before the Nightshade books. Rise jumps right into the action and throws readers into Ember and Barrow's world as they attempt to escape and save their Order. This book is dark, supernatural, and the connection between Ember and Barrow is not only strong but striking. Warning: The darkness will triumph. Otherwise, how will Nightshade's story begin?

Why you should read it: Andrea Cremer is a fabulous YA writer whose books appeal to adults. Her Nightshade books are best sellers, and I love that she went back and gave readers the prequel series to the war. Ember is an awesome heroine, and though I dislike how much the YA series use love triangles, I really felt the connection between Barrow and Ember. I did feel there were a couple of instances where Ember broke down (totally out of character), but in the end she pulled it together. All in all, a very nice fantasy read.

Perfect Prequel

Others in Series:
Rift

Ember, Barrow, and the others have run. It's the only way afterall. They know what Lady Eira is planning, her alliance with Bosque Mar and just what is going to happen in the world around them. They know that Conatus is suffering and may forever be tarnished. Afterall, Lady Eira is running it now and she is bringing in the darkness. They ride over the country side, having seperated a while ago and now they have to find a place for refuge. Are there any allies left for the Knights of Conatus in the world? Meanwhile, back at the Tearmunn things are changing faster than anyone could imagine. With a valuable hostage, they try to call Ember back to them. Alistair begins to create a beast unlike any that anyone has ever seen before and it is his goal to have power beyond the means of even Bosque Mar if he can manage it.

But will it all come together? Can good conquer over such dark evil?

I loved Rift. It was one of my absolute favorites and I love the way that Cremer decided to write a quick prequel series that goes with her Nightshade series. What it does is explain a lot more about how the world in Nightshade began. Where the Guardians came from. How the pieces of the sword got to all those far off places. There are so many really amazing questions answered here that could not be fully answered in the last series.

Ember once again proves her worth as an amazing character. Strong, sturdy, and determined I loved the way that she was ready to stand up and fight no matter what was going on. She was ready to do the hardest things to protect herself, her loved ones, and of course Conatus. I loved all the characters, I love Barrow. the only thing that I felt was missing was.. the bit of tension that the two had in the first book. That 'I know we like each other but we dont always get along' tension. That was one of the things that made them so fantastic in the first book. In this one I felt it was a little more sickly sweet and I missed the old dynamic.

The final battle was amazing, it was fast paced and sudden it was quick and filled with all kinds of scenes and things that I didn't expect. I loved how it all ended and rounded up perfectly. Giving you a gate way to Nightshade. I really don't think you would have to read these in any order. You could read the Rift series before OR after Nightshade and you would be able to get the same benefits. It was truly an amazing series and a great companion. I cannot wait to see what Cremer does next.
