Not Believeable

I bought this book with the anticiaption of learning something of the person and time. Unfortuinatly I failed to realize this was a novel just using real people. As has been pointed out there were numerous techinal errors, such as the drivers equipment, aircraft and pain medication. The writer also takes the positon that he knows what Collins was doing at the time of the accident that led to his death, since he died how is that possible? The writer again does it with the road accident that resuleted in Hawthorn's death.
If you want to write fiction, then write fiction but don't trade on the lives of actual people he lived. I would not recommend this book,
It remined me of some of the movies made in the 1950's just all drama and the actors pulling their hair out is self doubt and weakness of spirt,

Historical Fiction Must Be Accepted as Just That!

I've been a motor racing fan for most of my life with a great interest in the period from 1953 - 1968. I've just about read everything I could get my hands on about Mike and all of his contemporaries. Shaw does a very good job of turning frequently published facts into an interesting story. Like most Historical Fiction, he assume a lot of things. What about Oliver Stone as a director? Doesn't he do that? That's the name of the game.
Historical fiction diverges from history. For anyone who knows anything about the subject, they will accept this great and imaginative story for why it is; historical fiction about some very brave and enthusiastic men during a period of time, the likes of which we will never see again.

Compelling Portrait of a Flawed Hero

Mike Hawthorn was a very unhappy young man whose short life was crowded with victory and loss. This much is common knowledge, but the details are mired in legend, obscured by the incandescent image of the bluff, bow-tie wearing amateur who became Britain's first World Champion. In "One Glorious Hour," Don Shaw expands on the Hawthorn myth, exploring the driver's fragile psyche during his difficult Formula One championship season of 1958. Honestly, I'm not certain whether this book is intended as history or drama, and I don't really care. It reads like a novel, and a very well-written one, effortlessly evoking the era and the people who animated 1950s Grand Prix racing. I wasn't expecting much more than a rote recounting of Hawthorn's career. Instead, I was delighted with the way "One Glorious Hour" drew me into a world long passed. The story would make a splendid film as well.
