A fun read and a great way to approach some not-so-fun topics.

Books that deal with mean girls are always stories I want to pick up. Friendships and bullies are hot topics in YA and the reality is, high schoolers are living these stories every day. So a book like THE SWEET REVENGE OF CELIA DOOR, which approaches these tough topics with a side of humor, was at the top of my list.
As a freshman in high school, Celia Door is determined to leave middle school behind her -- the labels, the bullies, the failed friendships and the incident that ruined her life. But she feels like the only way to get this is to get revenge on Sandy Firestone, the girl who put her under, well, fire. Celia arrives with a new wardrobe, a poetry notebook, and a plan. Or, well, a plan to make a plan. And when she manages to befriend the hot new guy -- the one Sandy and all her acolytes are interested in -- it seems like she might be finally turning things around.
But the truth is, her new friend has a secret. And no new friend can fix the things going on at home -- her parents' "trial separation" and the invisibility she feels even in her own home. It seems like every time Celia gets ahead, she ends up finding herself buried even deeper in a new problem. And soon, she's forced to confront everything that got her to this point, that made her Celia the Dark.
While THE SWEET REVENGE OF CELIA DOOR does read more tween or middle grade than YA, it's a lovely story that touches on a lot of tough issues without the preachiness that is hard to avoid in books about bullying. I also loved the excerpts from Celia's poetry notebook, sprinkled throughout the novel. Karen Finneyfrock's debut is a fun read, and a great way to approach some not-so-fun topics.

The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door

This book started out great. I was so curious to know what revenge she was after, and why! It was such a mystery! As the book dragged on though, I started to lose interest. It wasn't until the very end when the book picked back up again.
I did like Celia's character. She was spunky and funny. She really added life to the story. Drake was a pretty cool character too. They just both had some things going on in their lives that I don't believe are right and that I struggled with reading. I wish the smaller characters could have been more developed in the story as well. They were just kind of a filler I felt like.
Overall, this was a cute story that I enjoyed, but will not be reading again.

Excellent for the young and the not-so-young

I loved this book! It's obviously written for a young adult audience, and while I'm at least a middle-aged adult, I often like those stories (I am an admitted Harry Potter fan).
The story of Celia's Sweet Revenge did a great job of invoking my own geeky high school experiences. I felt a distinct tension at about the 3/4 mark in the book and was definitely moved by the end.
Finneyfrock did a great job of writing an engrossing story with a positive message, while keeping the story relevant but never preachy. A home run in my opinion. I immediately handed the book to a coworker who has teenaged daughters.
I'm looking forward to the next novel from this writer.
