A Great SharePoint resource that combines business goals and hands on steps
By Michael Hinckley
Many times SharePoint projects can be daunting. Where do I begin, what features do I use, what business goals do I need to achieve? We tend to read so much about SharePoint and prepare for it that when we come to actually kicking off a project that helpful guidance to get you past the blank site is much in need. This book provides just that. It lays out the hands on steps based on business cases that can be easily translated to your organization. Many times people are told to "go and play" without much "business need" guidance. This book provides both and will defiantly help you as with SharePoint skills as much as with organizational drive.

A very practical book for SharePoint developers & architects that can save time (and money)
By Supriyo B. Chatterjee
This book consists of 9 practical use cases that you may encounter in enterprise situations (see Table of Contents for list). Some of these are major projects - Intranet, ECM, Community, Site Searches & Project Management. The other projects are of lesser complexity but with significant uses. The book takes each use case and provides details with a practical solution (right down to the code level). The code can be downloaded from the Packt Publishing site - here [...] . The book's solutions can help jumpstart your enterprise project and help save time - applying one solution alone can more than save you the cost of this book. It can also serve as an example in documenting your project's solution.

unfortunate choice of XML examples
By W Boudville
The book delves into actually using SharePoint for business oriented purposes, in a top-down manner. Where you start with a desirable business objective and somehow you need to code SharePoint to implement this. Be aware that programming is still the main activity of the text. The person using this book needs to be a programmer, as opposed to perhaps a higher level manager who might want a business intelligence package that she can easily use.

Several examples in the book are characterised by long XML snippets. The verbosity of these is a perhaps unavoidable aspect of using SharePoint, or indeed most applications that use XML. Also, and more cogently, from looking at the examples, you can see a drawback. Many XML snippets are preceded in the narrative by instructions like "For the WorkflowName field, we would define a Text field with the following elements". Then when you read the XML, it has a subfield like 'ID="{4B57EC1E-C6CD-4197-ABEF-91854-013DDD4}"'. Are you expected to type this in? Whereas the other subfields have a readable semantic aspect, like 'StaticName="WorkflowName"'. Where does the value of ID come from? Do you really need to type in that exact value given in the text, or will some other long hexadecimal string do? And you might note, like on pages 52-53, that in a grouped set of this examples, the ID values appear different. I guess they do have to be different, right?

Asking the reader to presumably type such values is equivalent to asking her to type in random bits. What is the point? The problem is that the book says precisely nothing about this. An explanation would be useful.

Either the book was badly written to use such examples or the underlying SharePoint has a drawback in the current implementation. If the latter, then a future SharePoint needs a way to autogenerate those values. Or a future program that sits on top of SharePoint needs to do so.
