About the Author
Robert Wrigley is the author of eight collections of poetry, including In the Bank of Beautiful Sins, a finalist for the Lenore Marshall Prize; Reign of Snakes, winner of the 2000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award; Lives of the Animals, winner of the 2004 Poet's Prize; and, most recently, Beautiful Country. He teaches at the University of Idaho and lives with his wife, the writer Kim Barnes, near Moscow, Idaho.

An Examination of a Poetic Anatomy

Anatomy of Melancholy by Robert Wrigley
I knew nothing about Robert Wrigley till the year 2000, even though he'd published five collections and won the Tufts Poetry award, among many others, and even though both of us were old enough to have outlived most of our vices. When I heard he was going to be on the faculty at our RopeWalk Writers Conference in June of that year, I picked up his collection, Reign of Snakes. I was excited and impressed by his lucidity and the way he had of, not only melding lyric and narrative poetry, but using unconventional words to create striking and unusual images. How many people would describe rattlesnakes as "...nefarious marionettes, limbless,/ slithering brethren, and mouthpiece/ Howdie Doodies of Hell.
Wrigley's newest collection, Anatomy of Melancholy (Penguin Books, 2013), and there have been several good ones since the first one I read, continues with his brilliant imagery of substance and shadow in the natural world. It seems to me that nature is his vehicle to carry a reflective monologue on death, emotional decomposition, spiritual longing, and love forward. Added to this leitmotif that has been a consistent and important part of much of Wrigley's poetry, I felt a stronger pull to the world of youthful memory in this collection, the world where many of us "Baby Boomers" enjoy living because we can shade what we remember from our youth with the colors of our imagination. This creates a better past for us, which leads ultimately to a wiser and happier present. Certainly, these poems are full of wisdom and beauty from one of America's preeminent poetic voices. Much of what I just attempted to explain speaks for itself from the first poem forward. In "Triage" the narrator attempts to repair his favorite tree damaged by the world it lives in:
Afterward I plastered black tar around its wound,
wound a bandage of grafting tape over the tar,
and covered the tape in a green vinyl sleeve
against the winter yet to come. And every day,
in order to offer such apologies as I can,
I visit it. Sometimes, like the other day, I sit with it,
put an arm around it, describe the motions
of its leaves in spring and summer,
and especially in the glorious fall:
how its gold shimmers, and how sometimes
a leaf will loose itself and fly the ten yards
to the porch of my shack and settle on a chair.
The resonance in this excerpt echoes a subtle, yet perfect, metaphor for life itself and how we come to suffer through it to a point in our autumn when we have earned the right by our efforts to repair and live it, to cherish it as well.
The book is divided into four parts. My personal favorite is the third, Dark Blue Mouth, perhaps because it contains several of those poems mentioned earlier that focus on making past events worthy through present perspective. In "Catechism" Wrigley discovers how the miserable Sunday sermons he was forced to endure as a boy suddenly pay off after the church closes and he is able to use the abandoned building as a teenage love nest:
Every Sunday for a month we've met here,
in the choir loft. She'll undress and let me watch,
and then we'll desanctify the place - the pews, the air,
the ashtray a former organist abandoned.
Afterward I'll light my Kool with hers.
The stained-glass window will be shot with sun
This morning and give our skins a special shimmer.
I almost believe I made this happen by praying
every Sunday for half a year, alone and morose,
coming here and staying
until the doxology...
Through all this mental traveling, the reader never loses track of where he's at and what's really going on. Anatomy of Melancholy is a masterful piece of work by an American master wordsmith. If I had any complaint regarding the book, it would be that some of the individual images were so rich and the music of the words so overwhelming that I sometimes got lost in pieces of the song without caring where the song itself went. This is such a minor point that it may be my own limitations creating the distraction. There are so many things Wrigley does well, like using fresh word combinations and the excellent placement of non-metrical devices (assonance, consonance, etc.) to recreate the sound and rhythm of natural life, that it's a waste of time and paper trying to conjure up minor criticisms. Do Bob Wrigley a favor and buy this book. Do yourself a bigger one and read it.

American poetry at its finest

WOW! If you haven't read Robert Wrigley you are lucky to come across him for the first time. All his books are like delicious meals to savor. Language that will make you drool and stories told in such a surprising way it's like getting course after gourmet course your poetry hunger is both sated and delighted by. I love his humor and his humanness. His vocabulary inspires the reader to see the world differently. His intelligence shines not with ostentation but with wit and subtlety. His themes range from the nature of writing to love and death nearly always framed by his beloved wilderness. Nothing sentimental or easy here. Hard truths told with wisdom and a slant eye going beyond William's dictum no idea but in things with a philosophical turn that can get away with the Latinate and mythological all to better beguile the reader with freshness. I only read a couple of poems at a sitting in order to make the meal last. Some poems are better than others, of course. All are nutritious, a blending of blood and meat and a kind of sweetness that takes a sophisticated lover of words to truly appreciate.
