Tucson geologist Frankie MacFarlane returns in this absorbing story--her second adventure. This time Frankie, her brother Jamie, and Jamie's girlfriend, Carla, are detained by the Mexican authorities at the U.S.-Mexican border when they try to return home after discovering a body while on a fishing trip. While they are being questioned, Carla disappears. Frankie is barely home when one of her geology students is murdered on campus. Frankie and her old friend Philo help police officer Toni Navarro investigate this crime--which is followed by several other murders. Is Carla's disappearance related to these crimes? Well-developed characters, a lyrically drawn sense of place, a budding romance, and the importance of family and friends distinguish this mystery series. Readers who enjoy the geology-framed story may find Sarah Andrews' series with geologist Em Hansen of interest. Sue O'Brien

Review
Detachment Fault is a worthy successor to Miller's earlier novel, Death Assemblage. Full of sensory detail, it brings to life the flavor and multicultural heritage of southeastern Arizona. Fast-paced, it is intertwined with natural history and plenty of murder and mayhem. The food and geology are equally fun.

Favorite romp in Tucson
By Amazon Customer J M Strasser
I found this on my shelf, misplaced it and hurriedly bought the electronic version, eating up all the references to my adopted hometown of Tucson. I love the desert and the adobe haciendas. These mysteries center around the southwest desert and all the subtle variety it has to offer. Throw in geology and mystery was the added icing on the cake!

Frankie really rocks!
By P. Miller
If you like Hillerman's characters, than you will probably like Miller's. She has captured the dry, honest character of the Arizona world and has a scientists eye for her surroundings. The stories just keep getting better! Thanks Ms. Miller and keep Frankie digging.

Geologic Mystery
By G. Gibbs
Geology is a science of observation and deduction, so Frankie MacFarlane makes a perfect amateur detective, noticing everything and too curious for her own good. This is the second of the series, but it stands alone nicely. Those familiar with the first book will enjoy meeting Frankie's unique extended family, along with a handsome private detective who adds sparks to the mystery.
