I couldn't stop turning the pages... a great tale with a deep message' George Robertson 'a thrilling escapade' Bournemouth Echo At the age of nineteen, Glasgow-born John McCallum signed up as a Supplementary Reservist in the Signal Corps. A little over a year later, he was in France, working frantically to set up communication lines as Europe once more hurtled towards war. Wounded and captured at Boulogne, he was sent to the notorious Stalag VIIIB prison camp, together with his brother, Jimmy, and friend Joe Harkin. Ingenious and resourceful, the three men set about planning their escape. With the help of Traudl, a local girl, they put their plan into action. In an astonishing coincidence, they passed through the town of Sagan, around which the seventy-six airmen of the Great Escape were being pursued and caught. However, unlike most of these other escapees, John, Jimmy and Joe eventually made it to freedom. Now, due to the declassification of documents under the Official Secrets Act, John McCallum is finally able to tell the thrilling story of his adventure, in which he recaptures all the danger, audacity and romance of one of the most daring escapes of the Second World War.

The Other Great Escape - a tale of pluck and luck
By arascal
As Classified war time documents are released it is clear that many more Allied prisons of war successfully escaped from Nazi POW camps than previously thought. The story of John Mc Callum, his half brother, Jimmy O'Neil, and friend, Joe Harken is one of those successful escapes remarkable for their audacity and exceptional good luck. The story is well written and holds your interest from start to finish. In 1939, the boys were reserve signalmen, not infantrymen. As the Allies fell back to evacuate at Dunkirk, the boys were sent forward to set up road blocks to hinder the advancing Germans. The boys became separated. John suffered a serious wound that shattered his ankle. The road blocks were no hindrance to German tanks. As luck would have it, the three boys found themselves in the same POW camp. As luck would further have it, John's ankle was repaired by two orthopedic surgeons who were prisoners. The boys volunteered for work details that transferred them to what, luckily turned out to be a "country club" POW camp at a ski resort in Czechoslovakia, where they were released every day to work in town. John and a young woman who worked at the local hotel became romantically involved. After several years where treatment was humane and relaxed most POWS were content to sit out the war. A change in administration and different, more brutal guards convinced the boys that it was time to go home. With the help of John's Czech girlfriend, who he promised to come back for after the war, they made their way by train to Hamburg. None of them spoke German with any native proficiency and their laughably bad forged documents were checked only once a disinterested train guard. As luck would have it, they had a stop between trains at the town where the "Great Escape" happened the night before. Gestapo were swarming the town. No one paid them the slightest notice. At Hamburg, they stowed away on a Swedish freighter. The story goes on to tell of their time in Sweden and their lives following their escape. Although John tried to return to his lover in Czechoslovakia, he was unable to. The story is much more interesting and exciting than this brief summary review. It is a great read.
