Dracula (Ignatius Critical Editions), by Bram Stoker

When solicitor's clerk Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania on business to meet a mysterious Romanian count named Dracula, he little expects the horrors this strange meeting will unleash. Thus Bram Stoker's 1897 novel of blood and passion begins, rapidly accelerating from Harker's nightmarish experiences in Castle Dracula to a full-fledged vampiric assault on late-Victorian London itself. The story, narrated through a collection of documents-primarily journal entries and letters-chronicles the desperate efforts of a band of gentlemen to protect the virtue of their ladies and lay to rest the ancient threat once and for all.

Often vacillating wildly between the terrible and the comic, Dracula at the same time brings to life a host of compelling themes: tensions between antiquity and modernity; the powers and limitations of technology; the critical importance of feminine virtue; the difference between superstition and religion; the nature of evil; and, perhaps most compellingly, the complex relationship between ancient faith and scientific enlightenment. More vivid than any of its varied film adaptations, and over a century after its first publication, Dracula still retains its sharp bite.

The articles make me enjoy the book more
By Mr. Paul A. Ackermann
Ah, it is the fault of our science that it wants to explain all; and if it explain not, then it says there is nothing to explain.
Van Helsing said this to Dr. Seward to prepare him for an understanding of what has happened to Lucy. There are things in this world that science cannot explain, but that does not mean that they do not exist.
Free will exists. But you cannot put free will under a microscope. Good and Evil exists. But science will never be able to define them, or find a way to combat Evil. Oh, it can find solutions for natural evils, such as hunger and disease - but not Evil. This Evil, the Evil One, the Devil, is personified in Stoker’s Dracula.

Stoker grew up with Folklore of Catholic Ireland. He came to England in the late 1800’s and encountered the materialism of the secularists and the liberal Protestants. Although Stoker himself was not a Catholic, he was sympathetic to Catholicism, especially since his wife converted to Catholicism.
England at that time was anti-Catholic. It was just about 50 years ago that England passed the Catholic Relief Act, which took away institutionalized discrimination against Catholics. But this does not mean Catholics were no long victims of prejudice. Also, there was an explosion of scientific breakthroughs at this time. People started to think that science would explain everything and solve everything. They even thought that science would find the key to immortality (see the ICE book on Frankenstein).
This is what Stoker was addressing. In matters of Good, Evil, and Free Will even the Catholic peasants were closer to the truth than the secular scientists.
But modern critics feel that this message is no longer palatable to our age. Good, Evil, and Free Will do exist to them. So the message has to change. The message is now about latent sexual desires.
But if someone reads Stoker’s book for a steamy sex novel, that reader will be sorely disappointed. Fifty Shades of Gray the book is not!
This is what I appreciate about these ICE series. They do not try to “Catholicize” these classics. They only interpret from a Catholic viewpoint as far as the intentions of the author allows. Stoker still remains Protestant, although he is sympathetic to Catholicism. He appreciated Catholic practices but sometimes he misunderstood them. But Stoker shows a deep knowledge of the Bible; he alludes to certain passages often.
I appreciate what ICE is doing. These classics were written in a bygone era when traditional values were upheld, religion was relevant, and there was such a thing as objective truth believed by almost everyone. These are what make these classics to be classics – they have upheld timeless truths. Even in our modern, relativistic, nihilistic, and materialist time there is a yearning for these truths, which is why these books remain classics. But when modern criticism changes the message of these classics, then there is no point to even read them.

But thanks to ICE, I have learned to love these classics. I feel like I am living in the period in which these books were written and see the values the authors had at that time.

Bram Stroker Was Rejected Until This Masterpiece.
By C. Glass
Here is the collision between religion, fantasy, fiction, and spirituality. Well told and compelling, it keeps the interest from the beginning, through the course, and until the end. Well penned Mr. Stroker.
