In a parallel universe far, far away
By Walter E. Kurtz
Until I read this book, I never realized that the Executioner series is set in a parallel universe. The book starts just weeks before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Saddam is on the phone with the leaders of Iran, Syria and Venezuela. The funny thing is that the three men he is talking to are not the historical leaders of those three countries. It would be like reading a book set in World War II and have Hitler call the leaders of the Soviet Union, England and United States, but rather than talking with Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt, he would be talking with three completely fictional men.
So why is Saddam calling those fictional leaders? He plans to give them weapons of mass destruction so that when Americans invade Iraq, they fail to find said weapons of mass destruction and leave, thus allowing Saddam to come out of hiding to reclaim power.

I know that the bad guys in Executioner books often come up with crazy plots, but this is beyond crazy. It's not even stupid. This is completely retarded. It is also, from Saddam's point of view, completely unnecessary. He says that he has a single nuke. All he had to do, was to detonate it in the open and tell the Americans that he has more nukes and that if they invade, he will use them. The Americans could not afford to take any chances and there would have been no invasion. Also, if anyone knows anything at all about the history of the Middle East, they would know that Saddam would sooner castrate himself than give weapons of mass destruction to Iran.

But in Throwdown he does, and then the book jumps to the present day. The Hezbollah decides to attack a church in the United States and Mack Bolan is dropped from a helicopter on top of the church to clean it up. He quickly kills the terrorists and meets with the church's priest and a Hezbollah defector. The said defector had converted to Christianity recently and decided to tell the Americans about Saddam's plot. To make a short story even shorter, Bolan, the priest and the defector travel to Syria to attack a Hezbollah warehouse where Saddam's chemical weapons are being kept.

This is a good moment to talk about the two other characters in the book besides Bolan. The priest is an ex-soldier who decides to join Bolan on his mission. Although a Catholic priest, he has no problem with killing his fellow man. In fact, he seems to enjoy it quite a lot. He justifies it by quoting some obscure passage from the Bible and throwing some arguments that just don't hold water. At no point does anyone remind him that there is this thing called "the Ten Commandments" and that one of them forbids killing. As for the Hezbollah defector, he claims to have found Jesus, but apparently he does not remember that Jesus was a pacifist.

Let's be honest here. The Executioner books have always been simplistic when it comes to characters. Their main, if not the only, selling point is the violence and almost all characters that appear in them tend to be thin, one-dimensional, without depth and poorly developed. There is rarely anything resembling character development. So normally I would not except much from characters. But I do find something deeply disturbing about two Christians, one a priest and another a recent convert, being so murderous and unapologetic for it. And no, I am not a religious person at all.

Going back to the story, Bolan, the priest and the Hezbollah man go to Syria to destroy the chemical weapons. This is another proof that the book takes place in a parallel universe. Syria, as shown in the book, is a happy place full of happy tourists. That is interesting, because at the time (and still today) Syria was consumed by civil war.

Once their job in Syria is done, they go to Iran to destroy Saddam's biological weapons. This is probably the best part of the book. Since Bolan cannot just go in with his guns blazing, he and his team must rely on cunning and subterfuge.

Once the biological weapons are taken care of, they must destroy the nuke that Saddam gave to Venezuela. When the president of Venezuela (who is not Hugo Chavez in this book) hears that the other weapons of mass destruction have been destroyed, he orders the Saddam nuke to be mounted on a missile and fired at Miami. (Looks like he hates Cubans or something.) Is he totally insane? If he were to destroy an American city, the American retaliation would wipe Venezuela from the face of the earth. There is no explanation why he does it. He had it for many years, so why didn't he use the nuke before? Does he want to protect it from being stolen? If yes, then he could have it stashed in some secret bunker and have few hundred soldiers guard it. Even Mack Bolan would not have been able to get to it then.

This is the worst Executioner book I have ever read. The action scenes are quite good, but the plot is utterly idiotic, even by Executioner standards. On top of that, we see not one but two devout Christians who go around killing people left and right and do not seem to be bothered by it in the least. I feel sad that I wasted money on this book. Please do not make the same mistake.

Bolan Gets a Triple Play!
By Lionel S. Taylor
In this story Bolan has to go up against the most unlikely trio in international terrorism. Syria, Iran and Venezuela? All have been supplied by the late Saddam Hussein with WMD of different types and all are determined to used them. Bolan teams up with a priest/former Army Ranger and a Born again Christian/ ex Al Qeda agent and does what he does best. Overall the story is entertaining and filled with action but I did not think that that the writing was on par with some of the other Executioner novels I have read in the past.

As per all Bolan books since the first 50 a pleasant read as per all such Bolan books. After reading so many of these books it gets to the point where you can anticipate the next step. Otherwise a good read
