Ava Lee does whatever is necessary, even severing a recalcitrant wrongdoer’s thumb, to recover massive debts for her clients. The petite lesbian Chinese Canadian forensic accountant uses her sharp wits, her martial-arts training, and the connections provided by her mentor and partner—a Chinese man in his 70s known to her as “Uncle”—to operate internationally below the radar of the law. When Tommy Ordonez, the richest man in the Philippines, finds $50 million missing from the Canadian arm of his business, Ava soon discovers that the money was lost by the billionaire’s gambling-addicted brother in online poker games that were rigged by manipulating software. Proving this claim while trying to protect innocent middlemen takes Ava from her home in Toronto to Hong Kong, Manila, San Francisco, Vancouver, Victoria, Las Vegas, and London—all the while watching her back, thanks to a contract taken out on her by an adversary. From Canadian author Hamilton, this is slick, fast-moving escapism reminiscent of Ian Fleming, with more to come in what shapes up as a high-energy, high-concept series. --Michele Leber

“Ian Hamilton makes the global search for hidden money as thrilling as James Bond fleeing down a snowy slope on one ski. Ava Lee is tough, fearless, quirky, and resourceful, and she has more---well, you know---than half a dozen male detectives I can think of. Ian Hamilton knows his stuff, and he has created a true original in Ava Lee.” ―Linwood Barclay, author of No Time for Goodbye

“Readers will discern in Ava undertones of Lisbeth Salander....Irresistible.” ―The London Free Press
“Slick, fast-moving escapism reminiscent of Ian Fleming.” ―Booklist
“High-end travel, cuisine, and product placement add glitz, while Ava's circle of mostly offstage friends and family lend enough personal depth to lift this thriller above solely action-oriented fare.” ―Publishers Weekly

Who says forensic accounting can't be fun?
By Linda Cypress
Disciple of Las Vegas begins with forensic accountant Ava Lee waking up sore and torn after a lashing...and we learn she is used to this sort of pain. Oh, dear.
I nearly quit the book at that first paragraph, because I'm not a Shades of Grey-type reader. However, I had checked the blurbs on the book and no one had said anything about bondage or S&M, so I tentatively read on, and was very glad I did.
Ava Lee is a very readable new sleuth on the block. A forensic accountant, with martial arts skills! I love her.
She and "Uncle" are moneyed partners who track down and attempt to recover money gone wrong.
Uncle is elderly, at 70 something, Hong-Kong based, and has guanxi: connections and influence. He has a scant degree or two of separation from men who get things done, on a multi-national scale. Realism noted--mostly men at the top.
In this book Ava Lee chases sixty million dollars. Ava and Uncle charge a 30% recovery fee. That is a nice chunk of change.
If you have ever won or lost a penny or two in a casino, you will enjoy the Vegas scenes. There is a brief, necessary explanation of Texas hold'em poker.
The characters are richly varied. I liked the Can/Am Indians Chief Ronald Francis and Martin, the Chinese hit men, Ava's gambling mother Jennie, the good Maggie Chew, and the flawed Lily Simmons. There are snapshots of Ava's complicated family life (no boring husband or whining kids), her love life (nonexistent), and her martial arts training.
Ava jogs and sleuths through San Francisco, Vancouver, Victoria, Las Vegas, and London. You can follow her runs street by street. I like that. And, Ava eats! There are many richly detailed meals. Who knew meals containing chicken feet would be on the menu...and ordered. Thanks, I'll have the saffron monkfish and the dumplings.
Our Ava Lee dresses to impress. Are there brand names on her jewelry, clothing, bags, perfume, hotels, and autos? Of course! Can you picture every detail? Yes. Are brand names de rigueur in that milieu? Of course. Is it fun to drool over a page or two in Vogue, even if one is a Target girl? Indeed.
I enjoy Stieg Larsson's Salander and Barbara Henske's Maggie Martin, who make forensic accounting a lot of fun. Ava Lee is a very welcome addition.

No Bluff
By Ted Feit
Many years ago, around the time of the dot-com boom, an idea occurred to me for a different type of protagonist: a security analyst who applied his/her talents to solving financial crimes. So it was with great anticipation that I approached this novel, in which Ava Lee, a forensic accountant, works to recover funds fraudulently stolen from her clients. After all, there isn't too much difference between what an accountant and a security analyst does: Both study the books of companies and work with numbers.
Unfortunately, Ms Lee not once in this novel performs such duties. Instead she works to recover funds by cajoling perpetrators or using strong-arm tactics or other types of pressure. The plot is relatively simple: The younger brother of a Filipino billionaire loses more than $60 million of company funds playing poker on the internet, having been cheated by the two men running the site.
Despite my disappointment that my vision of a more technically oriented approach to the subject does not come to pass, this novel moves along at a brisk pace and is enjoyable on its own level. Ava is resourceful, shrewd, and capable in more ways than one. Perhaps questionable is why the author chose to make her gay, but that is relatively unimportant unless it comes to play a role in succeeding books following this debut.
Recommended.

Sweet and Sour Heroine
By Barbara Farrelly
Forensic accountant Ava Lee made her debut in The Water Rat of Wanchai and in The Disciple of Las Vegas has cemented her place in contemporary Canadian crime fiction.
There's a feel of Charlie's Angels Chinese-style as her septuagenarian `Uncle' sets up cases recovering debts and taking a cut of 30 percent.
An elegantly dressed old man, Uncle has been Ava's partner and mentor for 10 years. Their clients are typically Asian, normally desperate and, by the time they sign up with Ava and Uncle, have exhausted all conventional means of recovering stolen money.
Ava looks like Lucy Liu, handles herself like Bruce Lee and lives in a ritzy neighbourhood of Toronto. Her sexuality is revealed when her best friend Mimi puts her in touch with Colombian diplomat, Maria Gonzalez. Tall, graceful and smart, just what Ava likes.
Uncle has been offered a job by a billionaire Filipino-Chinese businessman named Tommy Ordonez, known as the Knife.
Ordonez is what they call a Chinoy, a Chinese using a Filipino name. Chew Guang, as he was born, had made his vast wealth starting with beer and cigarettes and diversifying into jade mines, ginseng farms, scrap metal, timber and chemicals to name a few of his business interests.
Ordonez's youngest brother Phillip was supposedly the victim of a $50 million real estate swindle. A developer called Jim Cousins sold the Ordonez company a golf course and residential complex in upmarket Kelowna.
But there was no land and Jim Cousins was in the wind. Phillip, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, was refusing to talk to his brother.
What the richest man in the Philippines feared most was being laughed at. The six or seven old Spanish families whose members take turns at being president would never accept him as an equal. They would like nothing more than to see him shamed.
Public knowledge that his younger brother might have cheated him would cause Ordonez unbearable humiliation.
Ava follows the money trail to San Francisco, Vancouver and Las Vegas where she finds an online gambling ring run through a First Nation server.
Her training in the ancient martial art of bak mei keeps her safe but for the really dirty jobs she imports a couple of psychopaths who specialise in `persuading' the villains to give up their ill gotten gains.
A compelling heroine, colourful locations and a tight plot will keep you up late.
