Review
Working with worms is part of a larger series entitled the Back to basics growing series. This work indeed provides full coverage of vermicomposting as well as an examinination of many of the usual issues with worms. Vincent handles the Ick factor adroitly with family activities with worms! The enthusiasm of the author, and her special involvement of her family, makes this book certainly different and personal, compared to other more sober and academic works on the topic. --Adele Kleine, volunteer, Chicago Botanic Garden

Well-written, informative resource
By M. Taber
All you ever wanted to know about worm composting, and more! Wendy Vincent's book, The Complete Guide to Working With Worms, is packed with information, yet is easy to read. She makes a convincing case that worm composting offers a great system to dispose of table scraps that is environmentally friendly while producing valuable compost for your garden. It can be fun for kids or families, and can also be developed into a profitable business.
In reality, Working With Worms is four books in one. First, it is an excellent reference for worm composting. It describes the key aspects of worms, their biology, the process of worm composting, and how worm composting compares to other types of composting. One of the book's strengths is describing the different setups that can be used for worm composting, along with their strengths and weaknesses. This differs from most websites that are dedicated to a single system or product.
Working With Worms is also a how-to book, giving step-by-step instructions on how to set up and maintain a worm composting system. Once again, the author often describes a series of options that require different amounts of work and different amounts of hands-on activity with the worms; important considerations when taking the plunge into worm composting.
Working with worms is also an activity book. Most of the chapters contain an activity that illustrates different aspects of gardening or composting. These sections seem to be mostly targeted for families.
Lastly, the book has two chapters on establishing a business based on worm composting. I must admit that I skimmed these sections, as this was not one of my areas of interest. However, these chapters seem quite comprehensive.
Overall I found the book to be pleasant to read and highly informative. The only major negative that I noted was that the diagrams are a bit small and hard to read. The resources section is a bit scant, as a Google search gives many more options, and the Index is limited.

Great book.
By T. Chu
This is a very informative book. I am a bit obsessive when I find a new topic, so I've read five or six worm books and scoured every website I could find about worms over the last month. Needless to say, a lot of the information starts to become repetitive and I start to notice when people are spreading myths rather than facts. (One of the very important myths is worms like pH 7 or 8, when in fact they tolerate pH 4 to 9, and favor 5 to 5.5. Normally in research labs the conditions are kept around pH 4 to 6. The other myth is worms don't like meat. It's not that worms don't like meat, it's the government and the author of "Worms Eat My Garbage" thought the general public, aka, amateurs, will be better served if they don't try to compost their own meat and fish.)
This book was the last book I read. I read this after I read the famous "Worms Eat My Garbage", and I think while the "Worms Eat My Garbage" author was clearly a pioneer in this field, this book was far more detailed and informative. This book also clearly lists the best humidity level to keep the worms in (60 to 85%, with 75% being ideal), etc.
In addition to the best conditions to keep worms in, the book also touches on how one would go about running a worm farm business. Since I am not super interested in selling worms right now, I kind of skimmed this section. Like what another reviewer said, this book is like three or four books combined in one. If you're going to buy ONE worm book and nothing else, this book is the best book to get.
Or, you can borrow the book from your local library like I did. :)

Great book for the compost enthusiast!
By Jeffrey A. Kirby
This book is so fun - I finished reading it and wondered why everybody isn't vermicomposting. Good, basic information, a quick read and not overcomplicated. For anyone interested, or with some experience in worm composting, this book is a good resource (don't judge the book's content by it's limited index).
I found myself laughing at the funny quotes that begin each chapter and skipping around the book looking for more amazing "fun facts". This book also has some "family activities" (experiments) to include the younger members of the household - or even a classroom - in the the worm composting project.
The chapter on harvesting was especially good. We've had worms for almost a year, beginning with a homemade bin and now utilizing a purchased stacked tray system. This chapter offered a lot of useful tips and suggestions for making harvesting easier and more manageable.
The case studies were my favorite part of the book. Relating to the experience of those interviewed, I could appreciate both their successes and problems. From the young kids, to the older kids, to the adults - including a business, they all had an interesting story to tell. Their first hand experience and what makes worm composting work for them is - in my opinion - what this book is all about.
Illustrations are good but pictures don't do the book justice. The quality of the written material is great - the pictures - not so good.
Also, the amount a material devoted to starting your own business is about the same as any other startup business guide. I think the space would have been better used for additional case studies - community projects, school projects, or other worm type businesses. A reference to a few good business guides would have been sufficient.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in vermicomposting. When we were getting started, we had to read and research regularly to try and find information and troubleshooting tips. This guide covers all of the problems areas we encountered and more in a fun and easy to read format. I would highly recommend it.
