Sherlock Holmes meets the Mentalist

I purchased this book on another Amazon account, so please forgive that it is not stamped "verified purchase". I can assure you that even though I am acquainted with the author, I did buy the book and am pleased to review it.
This book completely blew me away. In all honesty, I haven't read historical romance in a decade or more. Ms. Lee's characters so captivated me that I may go and read earlier works in this series as well! Yes, it was that good.
I won't retell the plot as so many others do. I will tell you my opinion on the story -- it was expertly written, paced perfectly, and incredibly endearing. I fell in love with the smart Samuel who couldn't turn his ever-thinking mind off, the slightly arrogant man who initially thought he could dally with Penny's affections and walk away unscathed.
Watching him slowly fall in love, against everything he thought possible, was one of the best reads I've experienced in ages. Penny was an expertly drawn heroine, a perfect match for this sharp-witted man with no direction. One scene that will stay with me for years to come, is when he draws her anger out, helping her to face it. It's exceptionally rare to see such depth in romance characters, to have them face such deep seated anger issues they are unaware of. I loved it!
I related to both characters for different reasons, and felt like I learned a little about myself as I read their story. All in all, this novel was an unexpected treat. Jade Lee's writing and ability to craft such realistic characters kept me turning pages well into the night and neglecting my own writing to finish the tale.

3.5 stars, Parts of this story are well done and others lack some emotional depth with the leads

Jade Lee continues her series about regency fashion designers with her latest offering Wedded in Sin. This is a historcal novel with interesting leads.
Samuel Morrison is a genius and he knows it, he's a little bit cocky and a little too sure of himself. As he strolls along a London street he sees a woman and a toddler being evicted from their home. Being a gentleman he intervenes and even helps the lady recover a bag she has hidden.
Penny Shoemaker is a shoemaker, no kidding. She has been designing foot wear for years having learned the trade from her father. She is being evicted by a ruthless lawyer who claims her deceased father gave him guardianship rights over her little brother. Penny puts up quite a fight and even manages to conceal a bag of foot molds before she is thrown out of her home and shop.
Penny is grateful for Samuel's help and even more thankful that he has found her foot molds. Samuel is bored and decides to assist Penny in her endeavors of regaining her home and shop. He finds Penny absolutely fascinating as she has a quick mind and she is very witty, seems that Samuel just cannot find any woman as remotely smart as he is with the exception of Penny and his sister-in-law.
Together Penny and Samuel ferret clues causing them to spend much time in conversation and adventures. Samuel is incredibly attracted to Penny and he learns early that she is not a lady easily seduced. Penny is a tough minded woman who has been misjudged and misunderstood by her family.
Penny is likable but she has a two major flaws; she has a temper which can become uncontrollable and quite frankly she even became violent in one scene. Penny has a boatload of repressed anger and Samuel is one of the few people who is truly aware of her hurt and resentment. Penny also has a problem with steadfastness and loyalty, in some ways she is too pragmatic and her lack of faith in the hero steals some of the charm from this novel.
Samuel prides himself on his brilliant brain but he soon becomes aware that his emotions are just as important as his intellect when dealing with Penny and her young charge. This is an engrossing tale but not one that always strikes the right note emotionally, especially with Penny's inability to trust her hero.

wonderful historical romance

Dispossessed second son Samuel Morrison notices things that most people ignore. He watches a young woman holding a crying boy while she shouts at someone inside the Shoemaker's house where she just was evicted. However, everyone saw that scene including the constables, but Samuel realizes her screaming tantrum is a sleight of the hand ruse to enable her to toss unnoticed (except by him) a bag onto the rubbish. The garbage she deftly threw away seems to contain a man's foot.
Unable to resist Samuel offers to help Penny Shoemaker with her problems. She explains that her parents were murdered, her inheritance stolen, and the family business gone. Furthermore Penny says she supports her brother and herself by designing shoes for A Lady's Favor dress shop. As he investigates her claims, they fall in love, but someone wants to prevent the sleuth and the shoemaker from learning the truth.
The latest A Bridal Favors historical romance (see Wedded In Scandal) is a wonderful tale due to the fresh protagonists teaming up on the investigation. Samuel is a fascinating individual who sees the world rather differently than apparently everyone else; his observatory skill makes him an ideal detective. Fans will enjoy the escapades of the amateur sleuth and his "client" as they fall in love while trying to solve the mysteries that threaten the shoemaker and her sibling.
