Drawing on the latest research in archaeozoology, archaeology, and molecular biology, Animals as Domesticates traces the history of the domestication of animals around the world. From the llamas of South America and the turkeys of North America, to the cattle of India and the Australian dingo, this fascinating book explores the history of the complex relationships between humans and their domestic animals. With expert insight into the biological and cultural processes of domestication, Clutton-Brock suggests how the human instinct for nurturing may have transformed relationships between predator and prey, and she explains how animals have become companions, livestock, and laborers. The changing face of domestication is traced from the spread of the earliest livestock around the Neolithic Old World through ancient Egypt, the Greek and Roman empires, South East Asia, and up to the modern industrial age.

Few have done more than Juliet Clutton-Brock to advance understanding of the richness of our domesticated animal heritage. This is a fascinating story of humanity's relationships with others of the animal kingdom.—Stephen J. G. Hall, author of Livestock Biodiversity and coauthor of Two Hundred Years of British Farm Livestock
An authoritative, comprehensive, thoughtful, and wonderfully accessible review of the origins and spread of domestic animals based on archaeological, zoological, genetic, behavioral, and historical evidence. A well-rounded book
By Blackbull
J. C.-B. always comes through with one of the best books in her field. There are a few odd little slips--like calling vicuna wool the world's finest, instead of the Tibetan chiru's, or not differentiating the savanna giant elephants of East Africa (Loxodonta africana) from the now-extinct North African small elephants (Loxodonta africana nanus) that Hannibal invaded the Roman Empire with--but this will still rank as one of the standard books on animal domestication. I am puzzled by the lack of interest in the process of cattle domestication. Perhaps she's never worked around live cattle and seen how obvious it is. All-in-all, this is a very fine book in text and illustrations.

Short, thoroughly researched and very wide in its coverage.
By lyndonbrecht
The topic is excellent, the research is thorough and the author is expert. I found the writing not quite good enough for five stars. This is a short book and to cover the topic in this length means it is necessarily a fast survey. That said, it is surprisingly broad in coverage, will offer most readers some surprises, and is probably the best short book on the subject and so, ideal for becoming familiar with the topic.
She cites a good deal of archeological information, some recent DNA studies, and notes that the DNA studies has revolutionized our understanding of domestication. Among the interesting bits I had been unaware of (other readers will find things they do not know) are that the Salish Indians of the US Northwest coast bred a dog for wool, the "Salish Wool Dog" that was kept isolated on offshore islands to maintain the breed, and that a cow-like animal, known as the gayal, maybe bred from the guar lives as a free-ranging forest browser with tribal people in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, used only for sacrifice.

The History of Domestication of Animals
By Tom C Marshall II
The book is quite academic, but very thorough and well documented with examples from all over the world --- different animals domesticated in different societies as an evolutionary strategy for survival.
