Magical but not very much
By Bookworm
Accidental Magic by P.C. Cast is about two sisters who think they're unmagical but with the help of a werewolf's love and a vampire's love they soon learn they are very magical indeed.
The first story is about 40 year old Candy Cox (but she would rather be called Candice) and how after five failed marriages she's missing male companionship but even if she is missing it she decides it's just better to swear off men in general. While jogging she runs into one of her ex-students Justin Woods who she taught English to 10 years ago. Even though she's attracted to him their 14 year age difference makes her wary. She's hesitant at first to even go out with him but she finds Justin different than her ex-husbands and she falls for him. Justin is surprised to find the alluring woman who drew him away from the woman he was with in the woods is Ms. Cox. Justin is immediately attracted to her and he knows Candice is worried about their age difference but they're both adults and they can have a relationship if they want right? It turns out that Justin is what helps Candice discover that her magic is through her poems and it comes out with the help of Justin's paintings. Candice and Justin end up married and continue working on their poems and paintings together.
The second story was about Candice's younger sister Summer. She's also a teacher and she also wishes she took her big sister Candy's advice when she advised her little sister not to go into anything involving teaching but she did because she thought it was a perfect solution for her magic since the high school is a magic free zone. Summer's magic is opposite. Whatever spell is cast around her the opposite happens and usually with bad results. Summer also came back home to Mysteria because she missed a certain fairy, Kenneth. But then on a field trip to Mysteria's art gallery she meets the vampire Colin and is immediately attracted to him (and he to her) except that she doesn't want to be and denies that she is. But then because of a student's spell and add in Summer's magic Colin and her get trapped inside of the Romeo and Juliet painting together. Colin is overjoyed to be able to feel the sun on him again and Summer realizes that when he's in the sun he's twice as handsome. Colin asks if he can kiss her and although she wants to deny him she can't. So they kiss and it's the kiss that brings them out of the painting because when Summer is shocked her magic becomes undone. Summer realizes that maybe Kenny isn't her type after all since their dinner date was pretty boring and just maybe Colin is her actual type. Summer finally lets go of her control with Colin and it turns out her magic is actually pure light and it turned Colin back into a human. Now Summer doesn't have to worry about her wacky magic interrupting when she and Colin are together.
This book was an OK read but I'm disappointed I didn't love/like it or enjoy it as much as I usually do since P.C. Cast is the author. I didn't really like either of the heroines. Candice seemed way to judgmental about Justin's past with women. I mean she takes her friend's word automatically and assumes that Justin just used her for laughs and immediately decides to get even with him. OK I am all for a woman to get even when a guy just uses her for his own amusement but that was not what Justin was doing. He was really falling for Candice. And I know Justin's past with women wasn't all that great but I felt Candice was wrong to immediately take her friend's word and get revenge although when she sees him with the female wolves that night that doesn't help things. Still she should have just tried to talk with him first not dump him in a ditch and leave him unconscious. Justin didn't judge her past five failed marriages but she can judge Justin's past?
Summer was the queen of denial in her story. She likes to have control over her life since her magic is so wacky and wreaks havoc in her life which I can understand that but when she says she'd rather have sweet and gentle Ken over handsome and sexy Colin we all know she's lying through her teeth. She's rather have a man she can control rather than a man who she's really attracted to. Or so she thinks.
I liked Summer a little better than her older sister Candice. She wasn't so quick to judge and come up with a plan of attack like Candice but she kept jumping between two guys although having to choose between the fairy you've had a crush on for the longest time and a handsome vampire is a little hard. Her control issues were kind of annoying. I understood them but exactly how does being in control actually control her magic? I thought that if a spell is ever cast around her it immediately does the opposite of what it's suppose to in a roundabout way and to her?
I'm sad I didn't like this book or even really enjoy it especially since it's a book by P.C. Cast. I really tried to like it but I just couldn't. I didn't really like Candice or Summer. Candice was too quick to judge and Summer kept denying her true feelings and saying she needed to be the one in control all the time. Although I did like Justin and Colin.
I give this book 3 stars.
