The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society (Revised and Enlarged Edition), by Arthur Meier Schlesinger

The New York Times bestseller that reminded us what it means to be an American is more timely than ever in this updated and enlarged edition, including "Schlesinger's Syllabus," an annotated reading list of core books on the American experience.

The classic image of the American nation — a melting pot in which differences of race, wealth, religion, and nationality are submerged in democracy — is being replaced by an orthodoxy that celebrates difference and abandons assimilation. While this upsurge in ethnic awareness has had many healthy consequences in a nation shamed by a history of prejudice, the cult of ethnicity, if pressed too far, threatens to fragment American society to a dangerous degree. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner in history and adviser to the Kennedy and other administrations, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., is uniquely positioned to wave the caution flag in the race to a politics of identity. Using a broader canvas in this updated and expanded edition, he examines the international dimension and the lessons of one polyglot country after another tearing itself apart or on the brink of doing so: among them the former Yugoslavia, Nigeria, even Canada. Closer to home, he finds troubling new evidence that multiculturalism gone awry here in the United States threatens to do the same. "One of the most devastating and articulate attacks on multiculturalism yet to appear."—Wall Street Journal "A brilliant book . . . we owe Arthur Schlesinger a great debt of gratitude."—C. Vann Woodward, New Republic

Amazon.com Review
In this updated version of a modern classic, acclaimed historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. strikes a blow against radical multiculturalism. The rising cult of ethnicity, he argues, threatens a common American identity, imperiling the civic ideals that traditionally have bonded immigrants into a nation. Various chapters criticize bilingual education, Afrocentrism, and the use of history as group therapy for minorities. Schlesinger raised eyebrows when he first published this book in 1992 because of his impeccable liberal credentials as a one-time assistant to President Kennedy and long-standing academic champion of FDR's New Deal. This new version contains all of the original volume's edge, plus a few extras, including an appendix containing "Schlesinger's Syllabus," 13 books "indispensable to an understanding of America." Titles from this eclectic list include The Federalist Papers, Tocqueville's Democracy in America, Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Mencken's American Language. The Disuniting of America remains an essential book for readers interested in the American character as it enters the 21st century. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
In this forcefully argued essay, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Schlesinger contends that America as melting pot has given way to an "eruption of ethnicity . "

A Prediction of What We Have Become
By Paul E. Hanna
This little volume written now some 23 years ago predicts quite well the situation we are currently in. Although the author only uses the words " political correctness" once he predicted quite accurately the current debate over diversity going on in our nation today. Instead of people thinking what is the Common Good for our nation we have one group after another: racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, economic etc seeking its own interest. Thus the dis-uniting of America. We are becoming less and less being One people and instead a nation of competing racial, ethnic, economic groups etc The result is increasing dislike and even hatred of those who don't agree with one's viewpoint. The Commonweal is being gradually destroyed.

What Is An American?
By Martin Asiner
The controversy over whether and to what extent America should be a multicultural nation rings loudly today but the earliest resonations began as far back as Jean Crevecoeur in 1759. In THE DISUNITING OF AMERICA, Arthur Schlesinger notes that no definitive answer will be forthcoming anytime soon. Schlesinger's position is conservative, an odd position for him considering his early youthful fling with liberalism under JFK. Schlesinger places himself squarely in the camp of Dinesh D'Souza and John Ellis, both of whom are aghast at the surge of ethnic tribalism that is currently sweeping the United States. Schlesinger believes strongly that America should be a multicultural nation, but he opposes multiculturalism. The former suggests only that our history books and culture should reflect the rainbow hue that began America. The latter implies that every culture on earth should have equal weight in all matters--except for the white, European-based culture which is the source of all the world's evils. He takes the garden variety complaints of the Afro-Centrists, the Reconquistas, and every other sub group that sees differentiation and exclusion rather than inclusion as the key to defining who we are and where we are going and notes that to the extent that these exclusionists have their collective ways in our schools, then The "United" in the United States will be a term bereft of meaning. All this is not to say that Schlesinger sees no merit in their laments. In fact, he agrees totally that they have been denied their rightful place on the same side and the same page as those who are descended from white European stock. Where he draws the line is the degree to which they seek legitimate redress. Schlesinger places the complaints of the cultural secessionists on a broad spectrum, with one end reflecting a complete hegemony of European whites over non-European non-whites and the other end its polar opposite--the demand that the hegemony continue but instead of a white dominant one, there is to be a series of feudal mini-hegemonies, with each one demanding power, recognition, and historicity.

In between the time of his first edition (1991) and his most recent (2005), Schlesinger does not wax optimistically that America can emerge as a nation that is aware of its multi-hued background without falling into the trap of Balkanization that has bedeviled much of the world today. As for Crevecoeur's original essay on What Is An American, the answer seems to have been more clear to him two centuries ago, than it is now to those who wish a life of seclusion amongst only those who look like them.

A Must Read for Those in the Social Sciences
By Justin Evans
This book is one of the most compelling reads of non-fiction I have ever come across. Without a doubt, this is one of few books I found of real use in college, and I continue to read and reflect upon it to this day. In fact, I would call this book essential for any social studies curriculum.
Arthur Schlesinger takes the issues of a new PC nation and puts them into real perspective. He is both pro-culture and pro-heritage, but he stands against the idea that cultural identity means a seperation of the American People. Taking on a myriad of topics, Schlesinger explains with great simplicity, straight-forwardness, and honesty how multi-culturalism can be taken too far, taken to absurd conclusions. Essentially, Schlesinger is letting us know that not everything is best when it is presented through the eyes of multi-culturalism.
I read the book in a single sitting. Once I started to read, I was drawn in more and more. Even if you don't agree with his premise, Schlesinger writes in such a way that there is no ambiguity to what he is saying. Knowing Schlesinger's politics for some may make this all the more shocking, but I have to ask those who oppose the message of this book whether they are upset that he is saying these things in general, or if they are upset because a "liberal" is saying these things.
In my opinion this book is of critical importance to understand the second half of the 20th century in America.

Magical but not very much
By Bookworm
Accidental Magic by P.C. Cast is about two sisters who think they're unmagical but with the help of a werewolf's love and a vampire's love they soon learn they are very magical indeed.

The first story is about 40 year old Candy Cox (but she would rather be called Candice) and how after five failed marriages she's missing male companionship but even if she is missing it she decides it's just better to swear off men in general. While jogging she runs into one of her ex-students Justin Woods who she taught English to 10 years ago. Even though she's attracted to him their 14 year age difference makes her wary. She's hesitant at first to even go out with him but she finds Justin different than her ex-husbands and she falls for him. Justin is surprised to find the alluring woman who drew him away from the woman he was with in the woods is Ms. Cox. Justin is immediately attracted to her and he knows Candice is worried about their age difference but they're both adults and they can have a relationship if they want right? It turns out that Justin is what helps Candice discover that her magic is through her poems and it comes out with the help of Justin's paintings. Candice and Justin end up married and continue working on their poems and paintings together.

The second story was about Candice's younger sister Summer. She's also a teacher and she also wishes she took her big sister Candy's advice when she advised her little sister not to go into anything involving teaching but she did because she thought it was a perfect solution for her magic since the high school is a magic free zone. Summer's magic is opposite. Whatever spell is cast around her the opposite happens and usually with bad results. Summer also came back home to Mysteria because she missed a certain fairy, Kenneth. But then on a field trip to Mysteria's art gallery she meets the vampire Colin and is immediately attracted to him (and he to her) except that she doesn't want to be and denies that she is. But then because of a student's spell and add in Summer's magic Colin and her get trapped inside of the Romeo and Juliet painting together. Colin is overjoyed to be able to feel the sun on him again and Summer realizes that when he's in the sun he's twice as handsome. Colin asks if he can kiss her and although she wants to deny him she can't. So they kiss and it's the kiss that brings them out of the painting because when Summer is shocked her magic becomes undone. Summer realizes that maybe Kenny isn't her type after all since their dinner date was pretty boring and just maybe Colin is her actual type. Summer finally lets go of her control with Colin and it turns out her magic is actually pure light and it turned Colin back into a human. Now Summer doesn't have to worry about her wacky magic interrupting when she and Colin are together.

This book was an OK read but I'm disappointed I didn't love/like it or enjoy it as much as I usually do since P.C. Cast is the author. I didn't really like either of the heroines. Candice seemed way to judgmental about Justin's past with women. I mean she takes her friend's word automatically and assumes that Justin just used her for laughs and immediately decides to get even with him. OK I am all for a woman to get even when a guy just uses her for his own amusement but that was not what Justin was doing. He was really falling for Candice. And I know Justin's past with women wasn't all that great but I felt Candice was wrong to immediately take her friend's word and get revenge although when she sees him with the female wolves that night that doesn't help things. Still she should have just tried to talk with him first not dump him in a ditch and leave him unconscious. Justin didn't judge her past five failed marriages but she can judge Justin's past?

Summer was the queen of denial in her story. She likes to have control over her life since her magic is so wacky and wreaks havoc in her life which I can understand that but when she says she'd rather have sweet and gentle Ken over handsome and sexy Colin we all know she's lying through her teeth. She's rather have a man she can control rather than a man who she's really attracted to. Or so she thinks.

I liked Summer a little better than her older sister Candice. She wasn't so quick to judge and come up with a plan of attack like Candice but she kept jumping between two guys although having to choose between the fairy you've had a crush on for the longest time and a handsome vampire is a little hard. Her control issues were kind of annoying. I understood them but exactly how does being in control actually control her magic? I thought that if a spell is ever cast around her it immediately does the opposite of what it's suppose to in a roundabout way and to her?

I'm sad I didn't like this book or even really enjoy it especially since it's a book by P.C. Cast. I really tried to like it but I just couldn't. I didn't really like Candice or Summer. Candice was too quick to judge and Summer kept denying her true feelings and saying she needed to be the one in control all the time. Although I did like Justin and Colin.

I give this book 3 stars.

Captives (The Safe Lands Book 1), by Jill Williamson

In a dystopian future, eighteen-year-old Levi returns from Denver City with his latest scavenged treasures and finds his village of Glenrock decimated, loved ones killed, and many--including his fiancée, Jem--taken captive. Now alone, Levi is determined to rescue what remains of his people, even if it means entering the Safe Lands, a walled city that seems anything but safe.
Omar knows he betrayed his brother by sending him away, but helping the enforcers was necessary. Living off the land and clinging to an outdated religion holds his village back. The Safe Lands has protected people since the plague decimated the world generations ago ... and its rulers have promised power and wealth beyond Omar's dreams.
Meanwhile, their brother Mason has been granted a position inside the Safe Lands, and may be able to use his captivity to save not only the people of his village, but also possibly find a cure for the virus that threatens everyone within the Safe Lands' walls. Will Mason uncover the truth hidden behind the Safe Lands' façade before it's too late?

From Booklist
The most compelling dystopian novels aren’t really about a horrifying possible future; they’re about the present, and the dangers we don’t see because they’re part of the cultural air we breathe. That’s clearly the case with Williamson’s somewhat moralistic but wonderfully realized antiromance. The term anti-romance is prompted not by the absence of true love in the novel—in fact, honoring it is a thematic keynote—but because romance is considered corny in the antifamily, libertine Safe Lands, where a pandemic decades earlier has made reproduction problematic. Consequently, the state abducts uninfected young outsiders for breeding purposes. Williamson deftly intercuts between the points of view of characters drawn from the group, which includes a teenage girl living in a harem. Along the way, well-observed details skewer today’s materialistic and superficial values. Yes, some plot points are hard to buy (e.g., authorities would be better at keeping the outsiders apart), and the biblical references can be too explicit—but that’s not a knock on the message, which is important and worth discussing. Ultimately, the multilayered, futuristic narrative should intrigue fans of sf. Grades 9-12. --Peter Gutierrez

YA Dystopian
By B. Burnham
Jill Williamson readily admits that she writes "weird books for teens". Well, Captives is definitely weird and definitely a book that will appeal to teen readers. A dystopian look at a future America post-pandemic, the book has a lot going for it -- interesting characters, fascinating setting, and a disturbing plot that feels both improbable and very possible all at once. Fast-paced with vivid imagery, I would recommend Captives to older teens (high school or older). The novel is never graphic, yet reproduction, surrogacy and promiscuity are part of the story and may be too mature for a younger audience.

The Safe Lands are anything but safe, but the veneer of the nation covers the evil beneath the surface. Those that live in the shadow of its walls have much to fear -- the thin plague that infects all of Safe Lands' citizens and the more insidious allure of a life of pleasure and the overwhelming control of the governing council. Omar is fascinated by the glitter and is determined to help his clan relocate to Safe Lands and start enjoying an easy life. But the encounter between his village and the enforcers takes a deadly turn and the once free people of Glenrock are now captives in a highly gilded cage. Some of those kidnapped are quick to assimilate into the new surroundings, while others are determined to escape before physical or spiritual infection takes root.

Williamson brings to life a dying society built on pleasure -- a society where all is well as long as one complies. Beauty is lauded over all else, yet the slow-dying public must cover up who they are with wigs, paint, makeup and SimTags (a kind of virtual tattoo) in order to disguise the plague that racks their bodies. A verse from Daniel is used as an introduction to the book, and the parallels of ancient Babylon and this new world are marked. There are a lot of things to discuss with this book -- technology, morality, free will, and freedom -- and it would serve as a great tool for a small group. Captives is also book 1 in a series, so there is a great deal to speculate about before the next book is published.

So, if your teen enjoys weird and wants a book that will cause an examination of current trends in our own society, then get Captives for him or her.

Recommended.

Hard to read for all the right reasons....
By Diane Estrella
A hard book to read, but for all the right reasons......

The first half of this book was difficult for me to read in large doses. Jill is an excellent writer and the storyline is epic to say the least. (This book would be AWESOME to see on the big screen, hint hint.)

No. The problem for me lay in the very possible, dystopian future that the author has brilliantly laid out in an all-too plausible way. It is scary to think of what our world COULD become. That many lives would be sacrificed for the "greater good," and that children and young adults would have to make choices that no one should have to ever, is terrifying.

The second half of the book I breezed through and was left with one cliff-hanger of an ending (naughty author!). I am highly anticipating the next book in this series and am curious where the author will take this one. It's heart-wrenching to see such depravity, but along with this comes a hope, that just maybe, people will awaken from their haze of apathy.

My only caution to readers, is that this is truly a young adult book with mature-ish substance. Some of the things the author touches on inside are drug and alcohol abuse, hooking-up, murder, suicide, forced deposits in sperm banks, and forced impregnation's. All of these are handled tastefully in the story, and only further the plot.

Life is not pretty in the future Jill Williamson has dreamed up, and I hope it's not a foreshadowing of things to come either....

Zondervan sent me the above ARC for review purposes. It will allow me to keep the ARC. I have no other connection to and have received no other compensation from Zondervan.

Dark is the way, but light has a place
By Sarah Elizabeth
What I Loved: Jill Williamson absolutely knows how to write from a male character's POV (point of view), and she does it very well at that! The dialogue from Mason, Levi and Omar (the brothers that the story is primarily centralized around) was great, and completely believable. The prologue was stellar - really plunged you into things at warp speed, and I wasn't complaining one bit. The Safe Lands is a completely unique 2088 world . . . full of Wyndo's, SimTags, Roller Paint, the To Dye For Salon, CompuCharts, GlassTops and a couple of wacky reality television hosts named Finley and Flynn. That said, this was probably one of the more unique "worlds" I've dived into in a long while - everything was true to Safe Lands form and remained that way throughout its entirety, which gave this novel a great sense of realism in its own rite.

I was really excited when Levi, Jemma, Mason and Ciddah became a more prominent part of the story in the later chapters, as I found myself growing quite attached to these 4 characters in particular. Speaking of characters . . . I really liked any snippet where I got to hear about Bender. Yes, I love me some rebels! I admit it. I really wanted to know more about him (and Arris and Lonn) and the rest of his rag-tag crew, and about how the Black Army had evaded The Enforcers' rules and watchful eyes for so long without being noticed. Quite frankly I wanted to be a fly on those underground Safe Lands walls!

Overall this book did continually bounce back to its faith-filled roots, even when I was afraid it wouldn't. The story, based on the first chapter of Daniel in the Bible, never became fully submerged in the Safe Lands' Pagan Babylonian/Sodom-and-Gomorrah-like atmosphere, thankfully. That said, I definitely think this book asked us to reflect upon morality, both good and bad, and continually asks us questions along the way like: "Would I be able to survive if I was taken captive and held in The Safe Lands? Would I let my beliefs fall to the wayside?Would I stand up and fight, or back down and blend in?" I love the deep questions that Captives pose for us to ask ourselves! Ultimately this book has really begun to grow on me, despite finding it difficult to get through the first half of the book at times. (The second half and the ending are even better, folks!)

I'm really looking forward to seeing where Jill Williamson will take the story in the next installment!

What I Didn't Like So Much: I almost wanted to stop reading quite a few times, mainly due to "the horror of it all," as my dear friend Rachelle Rea puts it. This book was dark. It was hard to stomach at times. And oh, how I shuddered at so many turns! But maybe that is the point that the author was trying to make? That life can be dark - really dark. Life is chock full of vices, and it surely isn't always pretty - especially for our captive characters, some of which try desperately to blend in with The Safe Landers. People, including the characters in Captives, don't always make the right choices - the choices that we think they should make. But therein lies a house of redemption for all sinners, Safe Landers and otherwise.

I'm recommending this book... Keep in mind that while this book does contain some mature content (that may be inappropriate for younger teens) this book is ultimately founded upon a Christian Worldview. If you loved reading The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins and The Giver Series by Lois Lowry then you'll most likely enjoy reading Captives by Jill Williamson too.

“The Reason is You, Sharla Lovelace's debut novel, transported me to a small town, complete with small-town drama, a slight Southern feel, and a whole lot of love-triangle action!  It was easy to identify with Dani, our protagonist….The relationships within the story are complex and fleshed-out, enabling the reader to be in the moment with the characters.  Great debut, Ms. Lovelace!” –Twimom227
“Wow, this book was amazing…An amazing tale of romance and love in both the lands of the living and the dead and a tale of how strong family bonds can form when the going gets tough and there is no-one else to turn to.” –The Phantom Paragrapher

A+ rating....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
Sharla Lovelace has only a very few books out. Last year I read THE REASON IS YOU and absolutely adored it (in fact, it made my top 10 list for the year). I've had this book in my TBR pile since I read that first one, but had such high hopes and expectations for it, honestly, I was a bit afraid to read it. Well I am so happy to report that this book was just as good as the other. So good!!! OMG!

The book begins with the shocker for Emily that her mother has decided to sell her home and go on the road with her crazy Aunt and the big blue RV. This is the house her mother has lived in since she got married, so both girls were raised in it. It has so many memories for Emily and the house seems to be giving those memories back to her. As she helps clean it out, she begins to have a series of visions of events that happened in the house which she is able to watch play out like a movie. It's giving her a new fresh perspective on her parents, her childhood, and her relationships that played out in the house...and each vision always reveals something that she didn't know before.

Emily is 39-40. She has a grown 21 year old daughter and an ex-husband in the picture. Her ex husband was her boyfriend all through high school and they got married when she got pregnant. They have a decent relationship although he was a jerk and cheated on her constantly. The ties to their daughter have kept them at a friends level all these years. During high school, she also had her best friend, Ben, who came from a troubled home. But they knew everything about each other and would end each evening sitting out on the rooftop outside her bedroom. Twenty one years ago that ended when he slept with her a single time and then disappeared from her life never to be seen again....until her mom starts getting the house ready to sell. He's the handyman she hires to fix up the place and everything begins to unravel from there.

This is a story interwoven with great characters....all tied to Emily. There is a lot going on in each of their lives as they deal with the upheaval of life. As the reader gets to know them, threads begin to unravel and secrets are revealed. Sharla Lovelace is a master story-teller. The way the book is written is magic. The flashbacks and the little pieces of new story you get along the way. I couldn't read it fast enough...and then was sad when it was over, so had to go back and re-read my favorite parts. It's an emotional read and definitely admit to crying while reading it, but I laughed just as much. It was just one of those books...all-around, it made me feel better for having read it. There is definitely angst in it, but the ending is gorgeous. I LOVED THIS BOOK!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I'll tell you right now, Sharla Lovelace is officially on my auto-buy authors list.

Before and Ever Since is a Joyfully Recommended Title
By mnix
Do you ever wonder if the walls could talk, what they would say? Emily Lockwood gets a chance to see her past from a new perspective, and to see how things played out and the humanness of people involved in her life. However, she also gets to see where things went wrong, and realizes just what it could cost her to put it all right. Will she take the chance to correct the wrongs from her past, or will she continue with the status quo?

Ben Landry was Emily's one true love, but he walked away from her with no explanation years ago. Now he is back in town and helping her mother to move on with her life. Emily never counted on having to face the consequences of decisions she made when she was too young and scared, but now she realizes just what the repercussions for her choices may cost her, and she's not too sure she wants to pay that price.

Before and Ever Since is a beautifully crafted, thought provoking story that engaged me from the first few words. Emily's life was slowly revealed, and I wanted to know what her story would be from the beginning when her ex-husband, who had hurt her so much, shows ups to the hot handy man that she sees later! The prose and the point of view that Before and Ever Since is told from has the reader experiencing Emily's life as she experienced the revelations that are given to her.

Before and Ever Since showed that Emily's choices were made from the perspective of the young who is lost, heartbroken, and scared at the time that she needed so much more than she was given. Her story delves into her feelings and emotions about the choices and what she now must deal with in Before and Ever Since. It fully showed that because of these choices that she made, many other lives are affected and possibly shattered.

Before and Ever Since is a story about the humanness of people, the fallibility that we all have, and the ability that we are gifted with to overcome some major obstacles in order to achieve the HEA that is very richly deserved. I thoroughly enjoyed that Emily attempted to make the best of a situation and still persevered in trying to save the hearts of some that so didn't deserve it. The chemistry between Emily and Ben was sizzling hot, and I was quite enamored of these two attempting to work things out in Before and Ever Since that I could NOT put this story down until I finished it. Therefore, I Joyfully Recommend Before and Ever Since!

Who hasn't kept a little secret?
By Lanine Bradley
Emily Lockwood thought she was out of the woods. After all her daughter is fully grown, she's finally divorced her cheating spouse, and her career is enough to allow her to keep the small but comfortable home she's spent years getting just right. But when Emily's old beau returns to town, he brings more with him than a bunch of old memories. He brings with him the potential to change Emily's entire world.

Although readers can see where author Sharla Lovelace is headed even before they turn the first page, her execution and writing style make the journey towards forgiveness worthwhile. Filled with intriguing yet real characters, Before and Ever Since is everything that makes Chick Lit great.

Emily is the perfect heroine, with just enough neurosis to keep the reader entertained without driving them crazy. Her relationships with the supporting characters, her mother, sister, daughter, ex-husband and returning beau Ben, are at times lighthearted and fun and at other times deeply genuine. This book will have you questioning some of the choices you've made in your life.

Entomology 101
By Amazon Customer
As a freshwater fly fisherman, I am always attempting to learn more about the sport. To successfully catch trout, it helps to know and understand the basic life cycles of trout food, i.e. mayflies, stoneflies, and caddis flies (you could throw in midges and alderflies). Thus I purchased this book primarily to further establish my foundation regarding aquatic insects, looking for the "how to's" of recognizing different insects and their stages. Unfortunately, this text is primarily a color atlas of specific insects and specific stages, thus rendering it thorough but inapplicable. The goal of matching the hatch is to RAPIDLY recognize a hatch/stage in terms of body shape, size, color, activity, and habitat so you can respond quickly before you miss your window. In other words, recongnize if it's a stonefly, mayfly, or caddis fly, and the stage, then duplicate it with the fly. The fish doesn't care what the insect's name is. If you want to identify a specific insect, or if your learning entomology, then this book's for you. If you're desiring a practical book for fly fishing, forget it. Instead, I'd recommend "Handbook of Hatches" by David Hughes. Overall, too much information...keep it simple and enjoy!

exactly what i wanted
By joe
This book is perfect for the flyfisher who wants some entymology background in addition to a selection of flies to go with it. Various lifecycles are explained, the difference between spinners and duns is clarified, fishing tactics are given, and there are tying instructions for the flies. The tying instructions are all text, but I found them easy to follow and I still consider myself a novice tyer. Note that this is a UK book, so there will be differences with the North American experience. I like this, however, since it provides some background to the old names for many flies: i.e. the bug names in the UK differ from those here, and these old names are reflected in some old flies (sedge=caddis, smut=blackflies, etc.). A nice bonus is a decomposition of the latin names in the insect description -- this helps both remember and understand them. And it's a hardcover! I'd give 6 stars.

With a name similar to a fabled outlaw, a passion for archery and a best friend named John Little, former Ranger Robin Sherwood had been the butt of many jokes, the bulk of which he'd accepted good-naturedly.

This, however, was different, because the situation he presently found himself in was a hell of his own making.

The maitre d's eyes rounded in alarm, presumably because Robin was in every possible violation of the dress code and, while it was October, it wasn't yet quite Halloween. The conundrum had clearly flummoxed him.

"My usual table, please, Branson," Robin instructed briskly, sparing the man their usual chit-chat.

"Certainly, sir." His gaze slid over him once again—further confirmation that his eyes hadn't deceived him, Robin imagined—and, with a small gulp, Branson turned and led the way. "If you'll follow me."

"It's like Christmas has come early," John crowed behind him through fits of smothered, wheezing laughter. "And this is the best present ever."

Determined to see this humiliation through to the end, Robin released a long suffering sigh and soldiered on.

A series of gasps, snickers and the clatter of fumbled cutlery followed him through the five-star restaurant. Though he was generally shameless and couldn't be bothered to care what people thought, he came as close to blushing as he ever hoped to and knew a small measure of relief when they finally arrived at their table.

"Paybacks are hell," Robin told him, his tone mild. He casually placed his napkin over his lap. "Just remember that."

John, irritatingly, continued to beam. He was in custom Armani, naturally—nothing off the rack would fit his Hercules-like frame—and every blond hair had been gelled meticulously into place. "You shouldn't have accepted the bet if you weren't certain of the outcome. Isn't that what you've always told me? A glass of Cristal," he happily told the waiter. "i'm celebrating."

Robin ordered a nice red wine and pretended not to notice that almost every eye in the exclusive restaurant was trained on him. He glanced out the window and admired the view instead. Downtown Atlanta lay spread out in a sea of night, punctuated with glittering lights and the occasional flash of neon. Though many of the storefronts were decorated with pretty mums, hay bales and gourds, fall seemed reluctant to make an official appearance thus far. It was unseasonably warm in Hotlanta for this time of year, which made his current outfit all the more uncomfortable. He grimaced.

That would teach him to bet when drunk.

"You look positively miserable," John said, smiling.

Robin smothered a curse and glared at his friend. "I'm hot."

"I imagine so." John's gaze darted to the top of Robin's head and he heaved a grudging sigh. "You can take off the hat, I suppose, but be careful not the crush that feather," he warned with a scowl. "It's rented, not bought."

Thank God for small favors, Robin thought. Better that the damned thing was returned than put away for future use. Particularly his. And given how much fun his friend was currently enjoying at his expense, he could easily see John pulling this little number out again and again.

Robin's phone suddenly vibrated in the leather pouch attached to his waist and, though it was bad form to answer it in the restaurant, he couldn't dismiss the call. It was an old friend from boarding school, Brian Payne, and more recently—more importantly—his new boss at Ranger Security. After the hit to his leg in Mosul had shredded his thigh muscle and thus ended his career in the military—as he'd envisioned it, anyway—Robin was eternally thankful for the job. Though there were many who would argue that he didn't need gainful employment, he'd never felt that way. Trust fund or not, he'd always needed a purpose. Needed to be useful. What was that old saying? Idle hands were the devil's playground?

He didn't know if he completely agreed with that—a battlefield seemed more apt—but he understood the sentiment. Busy people didn't have time to get into trouble. The only reason he'd been horsing around with John and had lost this damned bet was because he was between jobs at Ranger Security.

"Sherwood," he answered, turning away from the din.

"My Facebook feed just blew up with pictures of you, taken at Dolce Maria's, in what appears to be some sort of costume," Payne said, the humor barely registering in his cool voice. "I know it's been a while since you've been in polite society, Robin, but surely you haven't forgotten all the rules."

Robin swore hotly under his breath and Payne's chuckle echoed over the line.

"'The boy who wouldn't grow up,' one caption reads," Payne continued. He laughed appreciatively. "Clever."

Robin felt his eyes widen and he shot a dark look at John. "I'm not freakin' Peter Pan," he told him, outraged. "I'm Robin Hood, dammit." He glared accusingly across the table and lowered his voice. "I told you I needed the bow and arrows, but would you listen? No."

John blinked innocently. "I was afraid they'd call security if you came in with a weapon."

The staff would make them leave, more likely, thus ruining John's prank, Robin thought. Bastard.

"Ah, I see it now," Payne remarked, as though he'd just noticed something in the photo he'd missed before. He paused. "Fine. I'll ask the obvious question. Why are you dressed up like Robin Hood?"

Robin chewed the inside of his cheek for a moment before responding. "Because I lost a bet."

Payne grunted knowingly, as if this explanation made perfect sense. Which it did, Robin knew, because like him, Payne was a man who believed reneging on a bet—no matter how ill-conceived or asinine—was the same as lying.

He'd agreed to the terms and given his word. Balking was out of the question.

"And what if you hadn't lost?"

Robin grinned and glanced across the table at his completely unrepentant friend. "Then John would be dressed up like a vampire, acting out the Twilight saga via interpretative dance outside the High Museum. For tips."

Payne laughed softly again. "Oh, I would have liked to see that," he said. "Too bad you lost."

"There's always tomorrow," Robin told him, firmly in the glass-halffull camp. He took another sip of his wine. "Did you need anything else? Any new assignments come in?"

"No, that was all. Everything's covered for the moment. Enjoy the downtime. I'm sure it won't last."

Robin certainly hoped not. Though he had plenty to do to oversee his own business—look at financial reports, review his various charitable endeavors—he'd hired good people to attend to those things in his absence while in the military and, though he'd had a career change, he didn't mean to impose one on them, as well. That was not how one repaid good service.

In fact, everything he'd learned about being a good boss had come from following his father's short-lived example and by not taking any advice from his grandfather—railroad mogul, Henry Sherwood—who was a notoriously hard man. Robin inwardly snorted.

Hard hell. He was greedy and mean, a textbook narcissist whose first love was himself, his second, money. The old adage "only the good die young" had certainly proved true in Robin's experience. He imagined his grandfather would outlive Methuselah.

Currently, the old bastard was confined to his bed, a rotation of nurses on staff to see to his every need. His master suite had been outfitted to look like something that would no doubt rival NASA's Mission Command center, with banks of televisions streaming information from all over the globe—and the house and grounds, of course—attached to the walls and portable computers a mere roller table away at all times. He was just as formidable at eighty as he'd been at forty-eight and kept an eagle eye on his vast business and estate domains.

Though he'd always accused Robin of "being weak just like his father" and had never shown any interest in his grandson, evidently the significance of his own mortality had finally surfaced. Now the old man was acting as if he'd like nothing better than to groom Robin to take over the reins. Robin's response? Not no, but hell, no. He didn't have to own a crystal ball or possess any supernatural powers to know that they'd never see eye to eye, particularly when it came to how to treat employees. How the old man had managed to sire Robin's unbelievably kind father was an unsolvable mystery, one that had always baffled him.

Having lost his mother to an aneurysm while just a toddler, Robin had no memories of her, but he cherished the ones he had of his dad. And those were too few. Robin had been officially orphaned at fifteen, when his dad had died in a car accident. Gavin Sherwood had been buried less than a week before Robin's grandfather had shipped his grandson off to an exclusive boarding school—one notorious for corporal punishment, of course—in Maryland. That's where he'd met Payn, and a lifelong friendship was formed. Robin inwardly grinned. Nothing like a good thrashing to forge a bond.

As for John—his gaze darted to his friend across the table—that bond had been formed from the cradle. John Little was the son of Robin's father's best friend and as such, they'd grown up more like brothers than friends. Laughing one minute, pummeling the hell out of each other the next. Robin inwardly grinned. Good times.

John's father, Vince, had stepped in to fill the gap after his father had passed away and for that, Robin would always be thankful. Despite the distance once he'd been sent aw...

A short but excellent read!

Rhonda Nelson is always a great romantic read. She's sassy and funny, and adds little idiosyncratic moments to the story that are creative and nuanced. She's one of my favorites!

One of the big encouragements of recent years has been the impetus of Christians to discover new ways of living out and communicating the Gospel in a restless and sceptical age. This has given rise to a number of challenges and questions, not least about what it means to be the Church – and how 'fresh expressions' relate to 'inherited' forms of the Church. This report seeks to crystallize some of the major questions about the ecclesiology of the mission-shaped Church and to provide pointers as to how we may grapple creatively with them, including: • how do fresh expressions relate to parish and local churches, and to the overall ministry and mission of the Churches? • how and when does a fresh expression become a church in its own right? • how might fresh expressions develop a spiritual and sacramental life that respects the past, yet affirms their pioneering context?• What are the implications for the deployment of scarce resources of authorised ministers and finance? These and other vital questions are explored in this comprehensive and important study. It is essential reading for all engaged in mission, church leadership, theological and ministerial formation and those with responsibility for allocation of resources.

This report seeks to crystallize some of the major questions about the ecclesiology of the mission-shaped Church and to provide pointers as to how we may grapple creatively with them.

Fresh Expressions in the Mission of the Church concentrates on those areas of fresh expressions which Anglicans and Methodists have in common. The authors share their conviction that there is an important task of listening and a sharing of experience which needs to flow from this report; also a sense that 'inherited' and 'fresh' expressions of the Church will be more effective as they learn from each other what it is to be a sign of God's kingdom in the world. The authors offer this report in the hope that it will further the mission and ministry of their churches and also help us work together more closely.

About the Author
The working party which produced this report was co-chaired by the Rt Revd Alan Smith, Bishop of St Albans and David Walton, a former President of the Methodist Conference, and included senior representatives of the Anglican and Methodist churches.
