About the Author
Yuji Yoshimura brings to the subject a long ancestral tradition, intensive training in modern horticulrual techniques, and wide experience in teaching bonsai on an international scale. His nursery, the Kofu-en, in the outskirts of Tokyo, is a mecca for admirers of bonsai all over the world. He is also the co-author of The Japanese Art of Stone Appreciation, published by Tuttle.

Giovanna M. Halford of England is one of Mr. Yoshimura's star pupils. While in Japan, she studied at the Kofu-en for two years, completing the most advanced course, and thus brings to the writing of this book the ability to anticipate the Western reader's questions and problems. She coauthored with her husband the Kabuki Handbook, also published by Tuttle.

First written in 1978, this is a timeless book with beautiful illustrations and careful descriptions of how things can be done. Written by a Japanese expert who spent his entire life and career to cultivating bonsai, this book contains good insights in the art.

A great book for beginners.

Easy to read and the explanations on how to directions are very clear. Especially the sections on transplanting. I have transplanted successfully four bonsai trees thanks to this wonderful book. I would recommend to anyone who loves the art of bonsai.

One of the first very good technical bonsai books available in English, however be warned...

This book is excellent if somewhat dated. It is up there with John Naka's Bonsai Techniques I & II (which are probably the best books on bonsai available in English). I do have one word of caution to potential buyers, this exact same book was published in 1957 as "The Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes". I didn't realize until after I received my order that I already owned an exact copy with a different title. Do yourself a favor and make sure you don't already own this book under either of it's two titles, "The Art of Bonsai: Creation, Care and Enjoyment" 1996, or "The Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes" 1957. The content is identical, though the quality of the photos in the 1996 version are slightly better.

So, so good!

So, so good. It can be dragging in the middle, but it still didn't stop me from finishing this book. It is a mix of murder-mystery, coming-of-age and a bit of romance, and I love how the author meshed these together to create the story of Josie in 1950s New Orleans. Josie, a daughter of a prostitute, cleans a brothel and sells books at a bookshop for a living. She believes that the only way out of New Orleans is to go to college in Boston. But she must deal with the circumstances of living in a place like New Orleans before she achieves the life she wanted. "Decisions, they shape our destiny" is my favorite quote from this book, and I think it applied to Josie, who has to go through tough decisions to survive in New Orleans. I love how flawed she is, and how the people around her helped her through. I especially loved Jesse Thierry. He's a motorcycle-riding badass that your parents warned you about, but the people close to him know him better as a charming and caring guy. The climax and ending threw me off a little bit, though, but it was still satisfying.

Great character development and well crafted story.

Well written and engaging, it contains unexpected twists and turns that truly take the reader on a journey that allows a unique perspective of the underside of NOLA in the early part of the 20th century. The story encourages thought provoking questions about how the reader feels about characters who are in roles normally looked down upon, and helps the reader to empathize with choices and decisions they might otherwise judge. What's Not to "Like" About This?

I purchased the Kindle version of this excellent book and it's got more yellow digital "highlight" marks than my beaten-up college copy of Plato's Republic -- and for good reason. "Can't Buy Me Like" is a great and timely read, loaded with insight and sometimes uncomfortable truths -- all wrapped in Garfield's vintage unapologetic, "hold no prisoners" writing style. He and Doug Levy echo many themes I hit hard in my book "Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3000," especially around what truly makes brands credible in today's environment, especially the "trust" factor. Yes, as they write, trust "is an asset, not a commodity. It cannot be purchased. It must be earned." While some of the case examples felt a bit tired (arguably over-used...we all need to chill a bit on the Zappos examples), and the book's momentum slowed down a bit in the second half, I think this is the right book at the right time for marketers and beyond. We're all obsessing with likes, and friends, and followers, and what we sometimes mistakenly assume to be "easy love." No, we actually have to work hard to get the likes, and expectations continue to skyrocket to new levels, especially around the brand's role as help desk and service provider. (Not easy to do...operationally.) Anyway, highest recommendation. Big enthusiastic "like"... and no one came close to buying it!

more problems than answers

He does a great job explaining how traditional marketing tactics don't work (which isn't new - think Seth godin). He also explains how fake marketing can seek into social media. And he gives a few good examples of companies doing It the right way. But overall, I thought it was a bit long for the topics discussed. I also felt it was more of an update about the status quo than a real self-help business book.

Inspiring Book for Both Those at Beginning and at Peak of Career

"Can't Buy Me Like" is a new, very worthwhile book from Bob Garfield, well known ad critic and co-host of NPR's On The Media, and Doug Levy, founder and CEO of creative and strategic agency MEplusYOU. This is the book every CEO should read, every marketer should ponder and every social media professional will want to distribute. It is not another exploration of social media but of the way the consumer and brand world is changing, what this means to brands and how "marketers can and must define their brands not by the ads, press releases, slogans, coupons, sponsorships and even product offerings but by their core purpose." (Disclosure: I had the opportunity to review the book prior to publishing and share feedback--mostly praise--with the authors.)

This is the sort of book that can help open eyes, alter thinking and spark change. It thoroughly makes the case that the necessary evolution is not merely one of tactics or even strategy, but something even deeper and more fundamental. Garfield and Levy are bold enough to state from the start that their "immodest goal is to be not merely financially, but something approaching spiritually, transformative." But make no mistake, this is not some fluffy sermon on the importance of caring and tweets; the book's brilliance is in how it ties the need for core mission and new ways of marketing to financial outcomes.

The book begins with a damning study of why the practices that succeeded in the Consumer Era are wilting as we enter the Relationship Era. Levy and Garfield probe "the limits of advertising," which does not sustain brands but works only for as long as marketers feed the ad budget beast. As it does time and again, "Can't Buy Me Like" supports its claims with actual case studies and examples; for example, Colorado tourism catapulted from 14th place to first among states as a summer resort destination thanks to a new $12 million ad budget, but it plummeted to 17th place in one year when that ad spend was eliminated.

Garfield and Levy are not anti-advertising, but they suggest there is a more sustainable way to collect and keep customers in the Relationship Era. The book introduces the Brand Sustainability Map, which graphs brands on two axes--Transactions and Trust. Sure, your brand can get high transactions with low trust, but these "reluctant relationships" are expensive to maintain and remain constantly at risk. Better to fall within the "emotional relationship" or "sustainable relationship" quadrants (depending upon your transaction volume), which can sustain and expand relationships thanks to high levels of trust. Put another way, "Indifference is expensive. Hostility is unaffordable. Trust is priceless."

Social media comes up time and again in this book, but "Can't Buy Me Like" is not a social media manual; instead, it makes the case that social is part of the change occurring around us and not a new tactic to be deployed. "There is no magic in Twitter or any other social-media platform," assert Garfield and Levy, "but there is a sort of magic in properly cultivating trust relationships." Once again, the book makes the case with a brand case study: Kimberly-Clark's Kotex shifted from advertising that perpetuated the stigma of menstruation to adopting a mission that confronts the taboo head on. UbyKotex.com announced, "This is more than a Web site. This is a social movement aimed at changing the conversation," and it garnered four million interactions, received three million sample requests and contributed to an increase in market share from 4% to 7.8%.

"Can't Buy Me Like" is packed with more studies and case studies than any other book I can remember. The examples and research support key points made throughout the book:

- Need evidence that brand building creates value? BrandPower research on "familiarity" and "favorability" across 800 companies demonstrates that brand equity accounts for 5 to 7% of total equity value for the average company and as much as 21% for the strong brands, such as Apple.

- Have difficulty believing that corporate purpose matters? The thirty companies identified in Sisodia, Wolfe and Sheth's 2007 book Firms of Endearment as being driven by purpose saw stock increases of 1646% from 1996 to 2011 compared to the S&P average increase of 157%.

- Think "real time marketing" means having your social team ready to post during the Super Bowl or Oscars? P&G's Secret brand learned of Olympic medalist Diana Nyad's plan to swim the 103 miles between Havana and Miami. A perfect sponsorship opportunity? Yes, but by the time the brand learned of it, the event was just seven days away. In one day, its agency was on the ground at her California home filming three promotional videos; days later, the Secret Clinical Line was an official sponsor. (As it turns out, complications forced a series of delays in Nyad's swim, but with Secret's support, she went on to attempt the feat three times. She won the respect of millions and sales of Secret's Clinical Strength Waterproof doubled.)

- Do you thumb your nose at the small scale of social media compared to the reach of your ad budget? Secret's "Mean Stinks" program launched on Facebook and encouraged teens to apologize for and discuss bullying. The activity created 339,000 text and video engagements yielding 1.3 million placements in users' newsfeeds. Sound small compared to NCIS's 20 million viewers? Then you do not understand the power of engagement versus passive views of an advertisement. Reports the brand manager at P&G, "In the fiscal year that Mean Stinks launched, total brand dollar share was up 8%. Our Clinical family of SKUs, which were the products associated with Mean Stinks, grew 20% in volume versus the previous year. On our Facebook page, we saw fan engagement increase 24x with the launch of Mean Stinks, and about half of those fans engage with the page on a regular basis."

"Can't Buy Me Like" offers a rich vein of these sorts of brand stories and research insights, but it also strives to provide brands with a roadmap to embrace the Relationship Era. The book shares a seven-point plan to help brands move from listening to engaging to leading to measuring. It also shares Do's, Don'ts and "No, really, don'ts." And it conveys the real-life challenges of brands that have lost consumers' trust.

I can highly recommend "Can't Buy Me Like." Reading it inspired in me the same sorts of feelings I experienced in my 20s when "In Search of Excellence" aroused a shift in my worldview and career. I think this book can benefit everyone from young professionals (who recognize the world is changing but cannot often connect that to the business outcomes their bosses demand) to senior leaders (who have tired of some of the social media hyperbole but also recognize something profound is changing in the consumer-brand relationship). This is a book you will want to read, quote, share, recommend and buy for others.

Quite the treasure

Up Yon Wide and Lonely Glen offers great insight into the lives of the keepers of living folk traditions. It is chock full of stories, photos, and all kinds of songs, clearly transcribed by Geordie McIntyre including vocal slides and notes on the singing, from rare versions of ballads to humorous ditties, plus several of Elizabeth Stewart's piano compositions. With sections on Jean and Lucy Stewart, and appearances by Hamish Henderson, Alan Lomax, Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger, Kenneth Goldstein, etc. Includes some rough tales of alcoholism and physical abuse, and discrimination against the Travellers, all the more heartbreaking to those who love these songs and those who sing them. Here is a shimmering pentatonic minor version of "The Pride of Glencoe," a broken token ballad which in the subtlety of its insight outshines all others of its type. This book is a great resource for working folksingers and a great read all around, written appropriately in Scots with a glossary, quite easy to follow, and even includes a few words of "cant," a private language used against oppression. Great work by editor Alison McMorland, whose devotion shines from beginning to end.

Love It!

I love the Jane Yellowrock series! Have Stakes Will Travel is a great collection of short stories written from different perspectives. All the full length novels are written from Jane's first person perspective, while only Cajun with Fangs in this collection is. The other short stories are written from either Beast's perspective or Molly Trueblood's perspective. The changing narration gives a more dynamic view of Jane as a character. It makes you think of her in a different way, more vulnerable, more like a real person. If you are a fan of the series, this one will not disappoint. The timing is set after Raven Cursed, before Death's Rival, but there are no big spoilers so you could read it in any order. I wanna be Jane Yellowrock when I grow up!

Four short stories in in the world of Jane Yellowrock.

In WeSa and the Lumber King, the Beast who lives inside Jane watches as her hunting grounds become prey and Jane watches as Beast gets even. It took a minute for me to figure out that Beast was referring to Jane as WeSa or bobcat. This story takes place in the early times.

In "Haints," Jane and her best friend, witch Molly Trueblood, are hired to investigate mysterious paranormal phenomena--and the evil they find brings a new meaning to the words "haunted house." This is told from Molly's point of view.

Signatures of the Dead was previously published in Strange Brew and tells the story of the vampire massacre that made Jane Yellowrock a household name.

And in "Cajun with Fangs," Jane makes a new friend who turns out to have old enemies, and finds herself drawn into a vicious blood feud, fueled by dark magic and ancient grudges. It takes place shortly after Raven Cursed and before Death's Rival.

I enjoy Jane Yellowrock and am glad to have any excuse to visit. These quick reads are a fun adventure into the mind and world of Jane Yellowrock and her friends.

Great for fans of Yellowrock - inexpensive introduction to new readers

If you are already a Jane Yellowrock fan you must buy this book to fill in details of her life. If you have never tried Jane Yellowrock, vampire hunter/ shapeshifter, this is an inexpensive opportunity to try the series. Adventure, magic, intrigue,humor and mostly action, this book has it all. But be warned if you read these short stories, you will be sorely tempted to buy the rest of the series. It has background on some of Jane's life, including her relationship with Molly. Each story stands alone while upholding the quality standards of the series.

If you still want more the authors rogue mage series is even better. I eagerly await her next book and appreciate her holding the line on pricing.

Great stories

As an outdoor writer myself, I love great trophy stories. Finding stories and the men behind the stories, and the mounted trophies of legendary whitetails, has been an obsession with Duncan Dobie. I remember when he first started on this quest, and he hasn't spared any expense or any time tracking down the stories of some of the biggest whitetails ever taken in the nation. One of the things you can know about Duncan is he's a very accurate reporter. In this book, you'll be able to feel the story as well as hear it and see pictures of these legendary bucks. If you like a good yarn about taking a trophy buck, this is the book for you, but the difference in a good yarn and the stories you'll read here is that all these stories are true.

Must have for Whitetail Enthusiasts

Like its predecessors, Volumes I and II this book contains the stories behind the taking of some of the largest whitetails on record. None of the tedious "how-to" stuff here except what might be gleaned indirectly. Some of these deer were taken by serious trophy hunters who were after the buck in question. Others were taken by everyday hunters who experienced a once-in-a-lifetime day in the field. The pictures alone are worth the cost of the book. The first two volumes are terrific as well if you can still find them. I believe "Legendary Whitetails", deergear.com, still sells them. Highly recommended reading and viewing for deer hunters.

The Grosvenor's passengers and crew feared shipwreck and death, but "shipwreck and survival was not a possibility that anyone had much considered." When the England-bound mercantile ship ran aground in heavy seas off Africa on August 4, 1782, death would have been easier for the 125 who made it ashore. Drawing primarily on two contemporary reports, British historian Taylor reassembles the Grosvenor's story with precision and vision, making each passenger a character and each incident a fate twist. Merchants and children, Anglicans and Muslims, officers and gentlewomen were stranded without weapons or food on shores inhabited by the Pondo tribe in present-day South Africa. Fearful that the peaceful natives would turn hostile, the survivors struck out along the coast for known European settlements. But the bad decision-making that had resulted in shipwreck produced more disaster, and, by the end, only 13 survivors of the wreck are accounted for. Over the years, as news of the fate of the Grosvenor and its passengers drifted back to Britain, the ship and its fate became legendary, even Dickens contributing. The book may not resonate for Americans as much as for more direct descendants of the British Empire, but Taylor has brought the ship and its survivors to modern eyes with this commendable work. In the summer of 1782, an East India Company ship, the 741-ton Grosvenor, ran aground and sank off the southeast coast of Africa, the shore about 100 yards away; 91 crewmen and 34 British passengers survived. Taylor describes in detail what he was able to learn of the survivors' lives and recounts the vessel's structure and the calamitous weather that led to the disaster. "For the castaways, the natural world of Africa might have been another planet," Taylor writes, describing its plants and animals, rivers and insects. Some of the passengers and crew eventually returned home, but others stayed. The author visited the coast three times in the course of writing this book, and his research included nearly 80 sources. Gripping and Grim, Like a Train Wreck

Unlike a few of the other reviewers/readers, I thought Mr. Taylor was a brilliant storyteller. How else to explain why I couldn't put this book down and had trouble falling asleep at night thinking about it? It is the rare storyteller that can keep you enthralled when the outcome is a foregone conclusion.

I believe that it is precisely the addition of historically relevant exposition, intermingled with tidbits of human drama, that make this story so much more than the otherwise grim tale of "they sailed, they shipwrecked, they died." I learned a great deal of history and perspective about the time period. I found the story fascinating. It did take me awhile to become gripped by the tale (having to be introduced to all the major characters got a bit confusing early on), but even in this, Mr. Taylor uses his prose to gently remind us of who they are as the story progresses. By the end, I was saddened that we couldn't know more about most of them. I felt I had shared a part of their life and loss, and I was moved by the stories of people that became a small and tragic bit of history.

Window on a Vanished World

I really can't add much to the glowing reviews of this superb book. Suffice it to say that the author, Stephen Taylor, uses a shipwreck on the Transkei coast as a springboard to reconstruct an entire world -- the world of 18th century seafaring, Pondo tribal life, the politics of the East India Company, European racial and sexual phobias, and more. His writing is flawless, whether describing African scenery or the interior lives of long-dead people. "Caliban's Shore" is a small masterpiece of historical and imaginative recreation. Six stars.

The Grosvenor: separating truth from myth

"Lost at sea", a phrase that makes the blood run cold. Even worse, was the fate of the East India vessel, the Grosvenor, in 1782, shipwrecked off the coast of Africa, at the mercy of the elements and indigenous peoples.

Heading home to London from Calcutta under Captain John Coxon, the rigid social apparatus that governed English society in India applied on board the Grosvenor as well. Those of wealth and position received the same deference they enjoyed on land, the quality passengers purchasing pride of place on an Indiaman overloaded with valuable cargo. On one disastrous night, as the ship crashed into the unfriendly coast of Pondoland in Africa, any social advantages disintegrated as the survivors struggled toward land. Castaways all, the survivors were faced with a terrible dilemma, whether to remain near the wreck or attempt to reach the safety of a settlement.

Without authoritative leadership, the 126 survivors made critical errors in judgment, intimidated by the indigenous natives, their weapons useless without gunpowder and little knowledge of the unexplored terrain. There was a curious lack of heroism among the men who made it to shore, as they scrambled to save themselves, ignoring the plight of those less able.

The fate of the women and children left behind in the march became a source of many unanswered questions, the grist of myth, finally a black mark against the honor of the East India Company. Only a handful of the original 140 passengers survived, along with frequent rumors of white women assimilated into the local tribes. The fertile imagination of the English fed upon the fearful distortions that saw the delicate white women and children at the mercy of "savages", when their ultimate peril was at the hands of the men who should have protected them. The concept of "women and children first" had yet to be accepted into the social fabric of shipboard etiquette.

Society as they knew it all but disappeared, as people of quality were reduced to the same desperate straights as the common folk. Even more shocking, however, is the lack of cohesion among the survivors. There is little evidence of the espirit d'corps of later such misadventures. Instead, various groups continually splintered off from the original number, drastically reducing the chances of the more helpless, especially the women, children and the wounded. Captain Coxon was indeed a villain. Although not literally responsible once they were on land, Coxon did accept the leadership position, a mistake that was to cost the majority of the survivors their lives. His arrogance and misconduct did not come to light for many years, due to the lack of accurate reporting.

Taylor's account of the Grosvenor is compelling, drawn from a variety sources, especially since the tragedy occurred before journalism was freed from conjecture and common gossip, when any outrageous rumor was printed as truth. That and the paucity of written documentation led Taylor to sift through a century of supposition and lurid tales from India to England, including the fate of women living with natives, raising new families. Such gossip served as fodder for a years of bizarre tales and Taylor's painstaking research does much to clarify the fate of the Grosvenor survivors. Dramatic, heartrending and shocking, Taylor proves that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Luan Gaines/2005.
