Nameless: A Tale of Beauty and Madness (Tales of Beauty and Madness Book 1), by Lili St. Crow

New York Times bestselling author Lili St. Crow thrilled legions of fans with her dark paranormal series Strange Angels. Now she has crafted an evocative update of Snow White, set in a vividly imagined world and populated by unforgettable new characters.

When Camille was six years old, she was discovered alone in the snow by Enrico Vultusino, godfather of the Seven—the powerful Families that rule magic-ridden New Haven. Papa Vultusino adopted the mute, scarred child, naming her after his dead wife and raising her in luxury on Haven Hill alongside his own son, Nico.

Now Cami is turning sixteen. She’s no longer mute, though she keeps her faded scars hidden under her school uniform, and though she opens up only to her two best friends, Ruby and Ellie, and to Nico, who has become more than a brother to her. But even though Cami is a pampered Vultusino heiress, she knows that she is not really Family. Unlike them, she is a mortal with a past that lies buried in trauma. And it’s not until she meets the mysterious Tor, who reveals scars of his own, that Cami begins to uncover the secrets of her birth…to find out where she comes from and why her past is threatening her now.

Fantastically twisted take on Snow White
By Kate
Camille Vultusino should want for nothing. Her papa, Enrico Vultusino, is one of the living Seven Families and gives her nothing but the best. Enrico's son, Nico, would give his life to protect Cami from anything that tried to harm her. But Cami doesn't know who she is. Found bloody and abandoned in the middle of the snow when she was six years old, Cami has no recollection of her parents, her home or anything in her life before Papa found her. Now ten years on, Cami has two best friends (Ruby and Ellie), loyal fey maid and servants to cater to her every whim.

But Papa's mortality is leaving him and Nico is unstable and getting in fights left and right. Girls are going missing by the dozens all over the city and Cami is scared. One of the garden boys, Torin Beale, comes into her life and offers her comfort when her emotional security is fading away. But not everything is as it seems. Mirrors hide their secrets and when is an apple more than just fruit? Cami's past is coming to haunt her and her only hope is remembering who she was before it is too late.

Growing up I only knew the Disney version of fairy tales. My mother was traumatized by the Grimm Brother's versions as a child and forbid us to read them. It's only now, as an adult, that I've read the morbid tale in its original state.

Lili St. Crow had done an incredible job at weaving the traditional story in with a new dystopian version of Snow White. She has used so many of the elements found in the Grimm tale in Nameless whilst creating a unique dystopian world for her retelling to be set. Blood-sucking families representing the dwarfs? Somewhat ingenious.

Whilst the character of Snow White has never been one of my favourites I thought that St. Crow captured her vulnerability and naivety perfectly in Cami. Victim to the core with good intentions never quite being thought through, Cami was the epitome of Snow White to me. Ellie and Ruby as Cinderella and Red Riding Hood respectively are equally representable of their classic fairy tale counterparts. Ruby captivated me - Her feisty and take charge attitude contrasted well with Cami's passiveness and I can't wait to see what happens next for the trio.

For me, one of the best parts of a fairy tale is the romance and I found it somewhat lacking in Nameless. The roles of Nico and Tor in Cami's life felt somewhat confused and I have to admit the ending didn't satisfy the romantic in me.

Family, abuse, blood-ties and self-worth are all issues faced in this novel and dealt with in interesting ways. This is not the Snow White story you would be familiar with however I thought it was a great addition to the genre.

This is a dark and twisted fairytale retelling that would appeal to people who don't mind a scary rendition of a childhood classic.

Just misses something...
By K.Rose
The description of this book led me to believe I was in for a traditional fantasy novel but I found myself reading a decidedly young adult book, plonked in a fantasy world. Once I realised this I adjusted my expectations accordingly and once I worked out some of the varieties of different species (which wasn't entirely explained and very confusing at first) I began to enjoy the world. The rich mythology surrounding 'the family' was obviously well planned and explained well.

However, I didn't like the main character. She is weak and makes obviously stupid decisions, deliberately throwing herself in harms way for no clearly given reason. I don't know any adolescence that stupid. Then all her friends miraculously swoop in to her rescue at an extremely timely moment. Coincidence is a very weak plot device.

I did think that the heroines struggle with the barrier of her stutter was very well written with the contrast between what she thought and what she could actually say, and I did empathize with her. The relationship with Nico was well drawn, and her best friends were also strongly defined, so the characterisation was solid.

The story was well paced and the writing was immediate and engaging with some beautiful dreamy pieces of prose, but well-written prose alone doesn't make a good book.

It had so much potential!!!
By Bekah Awesome Book Nut
This had such potential!!! I don't really know how or where exactly it went wrong! The author had a cool idea but somehow the execution started off good and just died. But I couldn't exactly tell you where it went wrong. The writing style is dark, descriptive and compelling so it wasn't that...

This Snow White fairy tale retelling is dipped in some horror mixed with some mystery and add some romance to sprinkle on top. This retelling of Snow White is with vampires. She doesn't hunt them, No, she lives with them! HA! interested now aren't you!?

Cami is found nearly dead and almost run over by a powerful family named the Vultusinos. She is then adopted into that family and they just happen to be....vampires... Cami is a very compelling character surrounded by mystery. Where she came from, why she was found they way she was. Cami's past is even locked away to her. All she has to haunt her are nightmares that leave her scared and unable to breath. Her adoptive brother Nico is the only one who can help her through these nightmares. Things from these nightmares start to come to real life and she starts to learn the truth about her past.

Nico, the love interest and adopted brother (a little weird) actually was a great, yet, confusing character and at times I didn't like him! It started off as if he was in love with her but had to keep his distance, which added tension and I liked that, but then when things progressed it seemed to become a very unhealthy relationship-if you can even call it that-Cami is scared of him yet at the same time pines for him and loves him and feels like she can't survive without him....WHAT?! yeah sounds unhealthy and creepy to me. Regarless of the fact that they were "brother/sister" it didn't really bother me because they were obviously NOT related...at all, just pretty much grew up together. But, the romance was very lacking and they barely interact with each other and when they do it's melodramatic! What's up with that?!

So another male character comes along and to add to the mystery carries the same scars that Cami has yet can't speak about it. Then things happen that you can kind of see coming, in regards to this character but you're hoping you are wrong. whatever. It was all cool and great and yet...something was just....OFF. Maybe it was the lack of world building, maybe it was Cami as a character and her lack of strength in personality or anything.

Sexual Content: moderate (a female was sweaty and took off her shirt to lay next to a male character-nothing happens)
Language: mild
Violence: moderate (an understanding that children were abused, horribly)
Drugs/Alcohol: mild
