When terrorists butcher his sensei, a samurai takes vengeance in blood

On leave in Tokyo, American GI Robert Sand is shot trying to protect an old man from a quartet of drunk American soldiers. As Sand passes out, the old man springs on his tormenters, beating them senseless with frail, wrinkled fists. He is Master Konuma, keeper of the ancient secrets of the samurai, and Sand is about to become his newest pupil. Over the next seven years, the American learns martial arts, swordplay, and stealth, becoming not just the first black man to ever take the oath of the samurai, but the strongest fighter Konuma has ever trained.

One night, two dozen terrorists ambush the dojo, slaughtering Konuma and his students as the first step in a terrifying assault on world peace. Though he cannot save his sensei, Sand escapes with his life and a gnawing hunger for vengeance. All he has is his sword, but his sword is all he needs.

About the Author

Marc Olden (1933–2003) was the author of forty mystery and suspense novels. Born in Baltimore, he began writing while working in New York as a Broadway publicist. His first book, Angela Davis (1973), was a nonfiction study of the controversial Black Panther. In 1973 he also published Narc, under the name Robert Hawke, beginning a hard-boiled nine-book series about a federal narcotics agent.

A year later, Black Samurai introduced Robert Sand, a martial arts expert who becomes the first non-Japanese student of a samurai master. Based on Olden’s own interest in martial arts, which led him to the advanced ranks of karate and aikido, the novel spawned a successful eight-book series. Olden continued writing for the next three decades, often drawing on his fascination with Japanese culture and history.

The First In A Rather Well Done Martial Arts Action Series
By Shawn Kovacich
Black Samurai is the first book in what would become an eight volume series written in the 1970s by author Marc Olden, which tells the story of Robert Sand, an American GI on leave in Japan during the Vietnam War. While coming to the aid of an elderly Oriental man who is being harassed by a couple of American soldiers, Sand is shot in the belly and left for dead. However, his life is saved by the man whose aid he attempted to come to.

As Sand is recovering from his injuries, he becomes a student of the elderly man he attempted to save who turns out to be one of the greatest martial arts masters left in the entire world. Sand endures years of training to become one of the best of all the students. Near the end of his training, a group of mercenaries led by an insane ex-military leader invades the village that Sand is living in and slaughters all of Sand's fellow students and his master. Sand and the students make a good accounting of themselves, but alas, not enough to stop their attackers.

Sand, who had previously met the former President of the United States, William "Baron" Clarke years earlier at the behest of his master, teams up with him in order to confront and destroy powerful villains that seem to be untouchable by normal legal standards. Another very interesting character that you are introduced to is "The Baron's" number one Secret Service Agent, Frank Pines. Pines' is a very intriguing character and you get to learn a lot more about him as the series progresses. Needless to say, he and Sand don't really hit it off all that well initially.

The basic plot of this first novel in the series is as follows:

An American ex-military officer by the name of Tolstoy gathers up a varied group of criminals hell-bent on destroying American by any means necessary. In this case, they plan on massacring hundreds of people in a small American town. Some of his fellow villains are: James Winters: an IRA terrorist, a black man who has been the victim of violent racism since the day he was born, and Arab terrorist who hates America because of its support of Israel. Just to name a few. Sand ends up chasing them all over the world and... well I'm not going to spoil it for you, you are just going to have to read it yourself to find out what happens, but take my word for it, this (along with the other books in the series) is a really good and more importantly, fun book to read for a couple of hours.

I highly recommend this book as well as the others in the series:

Black Samurai #2: The Golden Kill

Killer warrior (Black Samurai)

Black Samurai #4 The Deadly Pearl

Black Samurai #5. The Inquisition

Black Samurai #6. The Warlock

Sword of Allah (Black Samurai #7)

The Katana Black Samurai # 8

An excellent account on the total discipline it would take to overcome an be a modern day Samuari . Excellent writing I read this book in 1974 as a young student in the arts. Have listed all nine novels to be read by my advance students! The author often refers back to the Samuari's training when he encounters adverse situations. As a Master Instructor that is the message we traditional Martial Art Instructors strived to get across to student, training and more training. Marc novels all tell a story an excellent story with great plots.
