PHILIP M. HOPKINS is Professor of Anesthesia, University of Leeds, Director, UK National Malignant Hyperthermia Investigation Unit, and Honorary Consultant Anesthetist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Leeds, UK. Dr. Hopkins received his M.D. from the University of Leeds, Leeds, UK. Dr. Hopkins currently serves as an Editorial Board member of the British Journal of Anaesthesia and is a member of the ESA Research Committee. Dr. Hopkins’s research consists primarily of anesthesia and intensive care medicine in relation to malignant hyperthermia, exertional heat illness and stroke, as well as drug reactions and allergies, and the use of ultrasound-guided techniques in regional anesthesia.

A. R. BODENHAM is Director of Intensive Care and Consultant in Anesthesia, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, UK. Dr. Bodenham obtained his M.D. from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, UK. Dr. Bodenham specializes in anesthesia and intensive care, with an interest in interventional procedures, as well as vascular surgery and access procedures. About the Author

Steve Peifer serves as Director of College Guidance for Rift Valley Academy in Kijabe, Kenya. He established a rural food program in 2002 that provides lunches for 20,000 Kenyan schoolchildren a day. He has also built the first solar-powered computer-training center in Kenya, and is now developing twenty computer classroom labs for rural schools. For his work on behalf of Kenyan children, he was awarded the CNN Heroes Award for Championing Children in 2007, the 2007 Yale Counseling Award and the 2010 NACAC Excellence in Education Award. Steve and Nancy have four children.

Gregg Lewis is an award-winning author and coauthor of more than fifty books, including Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story, Take the Risk and The Big Picture.

I didn't want to read this book

As the title of my review makes clear, I really didn't want to read this book. It showed up at my door, unsolicited, and I groaned inwardly when I looked at the cover. I just knew this was going to be one of those books where the author has a life-changing experience about world poverty and tries to make everyone with a middle class American life feel all guilty about it.

Even though I didn't want to read this book, I decided to read the cover blurb and look at the pictures. Then I read the first couple chapters and skimmed around the rest of the book. As I skimmed, I realized the author wasn't putting out holier-than-thou attitude -- in fact he made fun of himself a lot. The more I skimmed, the more interested I was, so I went back to the beginning and started reading. I barely put it down all that weekend.

In part this is a story about a family that suffered the loss of a child and took a break from their regular lives to be dorm parents in a boarding school in Kenya for the children of missionaries and then decided to stay at the school long term. In part this is a story about Kenya, with descriptions of the land and the people, including both the good and the bad. And in part this is a story about how small things can add up to big changes.

The author's choice to include amusing daily life stories, such as the boys in his dorm wanting to have the stinkiest room and self-deprecating stories about his struggles with the language, keep this book from becoming preachy or holier than thou. You have to laugh along with someone who can laugh at himself. Those stories provide much-needed breaks from the description of poverty on a scale no one in the USA can imagine and children so hungry they have to lie down in school.

The main point of the book -- and the reason the lighter anecdotes are important to keep the reader captivated -- is poverty and hunger. It's such a big issue that most of us end up feeling helpless to do anything about it. The author started small -- he had a plan to provide lunch for one or two nearby Kenyan public schools so the children would stay in school, get an education and have a better chance for the future. Over time his organization, Kenya Kids Can, grew to provide daily lunches for 20,000 children in 35 schools and built 20 solar-powered computer centers at schools.

By the end of the book, I didn't feel guilty. I felt hopeful. Little things we can do can make a big difference in Africa and around the world. In addition to the author's organization, there are local and national charities that are involved in We can In my home state of Minnesota there is an organization called Feed My Starving Children that uses volunteers to pack food that costs 22 cents per meal and is sent all around the world. World Vision is a larger global relief organization. And there are plenty more.

We don't all have to go to Africa (for which I am thankful as I'd be a terrible missionary). Anyone can do small things -- give up a latte once a week (or even just once) and donate the money. Kids could have a lemonade stand and send the money to feed children around the world. The last couple years I have walked a half marathon to raise money for World Vision but was not planning to do it again this summer. But after reading this book, I decided this was one thing I could do to help.

I really didn't want to read this book, but I'm glad I did.

In addition, the ecology, evolutionary history, and biogeographica exlanations of the origins and diversity of the fauna are reviewed. Finally, these Caribbean animals are compared to the amphibian and reptile diversity of Central America. Throughout the volume are figures, tables, and a section of color plates that bring to life some of the region's spectacular creatures.

About the Author
Brian I. Crother received his B.A. from California State University at Dominguez Hills and his Ph.D. from the University of Miami, Florida, where he was a Maytag Fellow. His doctoral work involved studying the evolutionary history of Caribbean snakes. He continued his evolutionary history work at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was also curator of the reptile and amphibian collection at the Texas Memorial Museum. He is now an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Southeastern Louisiana University. He has published numerous technical papers and book chapters and is the Editor of Herpetological Monographs. He has also been listed in the National Who's Who of Teachers and has received extramural funding of his research from several sources, including the Jesse Noyes Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

Excludes a large part of the Caribbean, the Bahama Islands

A book on this subject is a welcome addition to the library of any herpetologist. However, this book has a number of shortcomings including its exclusion of the entire Bahama archipelago. A book with this title should include these islands with their endangered species. The book includes 8 color plates each with up to 11 color photos of native species. Unfortunately, a number of the captions do not match the photos on the plates making them useless to the uninitiated.
This book will be useful, however the typos and missing geographic coverage along with the unusually high price for such a small book are definite drawback.
This is a college-level, acedemic textbook and not a field guide which may account for its price.

The Bahamas are not part of the Caribbean

I am not a customer but the editor of the book. I just noticed the review that complains the volume left out a key part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas. Interestingly enough, the Bahamas are in the Atlantic Ocean and not in nor border the Caribbean Sea.

My 10 year old daughter has never been a big reader but has fallen in love with this series. She loves that the characters are the same age as her. She particularly loves Cleo the Mummy. I'd highly recommend this for boys and girls since the boys would totally enjoy Resus the Vampire and Luke the Werewolf.

Extremely hilarious, fashionable, and overall inspirational.

Allie Kingsley's debut is tremendously hilarious, fashionable, and overall inspirational. A chick-lit like no other giving a realistic view of the lifestyle of the rich and aspiring to be famous. What more could a girl ask for?

The fact that the author has experienced fashion and entertainment, and continues to live in both worlds, is just perfect for this novel. Throughout it all I kept wondering if such characters were inspired by an actual person, if so, who. It was just an interesting story all in all. Very fast paced,.I was not disappointed.

This novel was not all about making it big, but it strongly depicted, amidst the fun and adventure, how hard-work and determination is key. There's also the aspect of understanding that sometimes things and people aren't always what they seem, and it's important not to lose yourself while doing whatever it takes to achieve your goals. Lucy learns that lesson well when her eyes are open to the bigger picture.

"I knew I was compromising everything that I was all about, but if this is what it took to be part of the scene, I was going to do it. And really, it didn't seem that bad."

That part alone says a lot about the situation the main character finds herself in. Lucy moved to LA with the mindset of starting her career. Her overall outlook on life before she took flight was quite applaudable. However, Lucy's values are tested. Her relationship with the people who truly have her best interest at heart is affected by Lucy's new found accomplishments, and in the end it leaves us all thinking how amazing it is that fancy things can place conflict in our hearts and make us question everything we were taught.

Lucy comes in contact with some sapid characters. Few good, few with dubios motives. Allie unveils them all so well. In fact, her clear descriptions are so good that you're given the impression she actually knows what she's writing about (then again, she has an industry insider). And speaking of writing, the fast paced and witty style kept me even more motivated to continue to the end, and I did get there in no time. It was certainly a light but intriguing read.

There's a lot you could gain from this story, humor and glamour aside, there are other things projecting in the chapters. I do hope you won't pass this off as a cheesy chick lit because it's not. I promise you'll find it informative if not entertaining.

Fabulously fun!

If you're looking for a witty, fun, fashion-forward read, you must get this book. Reminiscent of Devil Wear's Prada, but definitely has its own voice. Perfect beach read for those last days of summer, or a great way to start off the fall fashion season. Everyone can relate to the geek-to-chic main character, Lucy. I definitely saw a little bit of myself in her - once I got to Chapter 4 I was hooked and finished it in 2 days. More please!

Snarky, fun romp through the dark side of celebrity culture

This book is a total beach read. Seriously folks, it's the candy corn in your fall reading world. It's like US magazine in novel format. At the beginning of the book all I could think was "Where was this book when I was 17?!" I would have LOVED it. As it stands my adult reading of the tale became more enjoyable when I decided to enjoy the good bits and ignore everything that wasn't working - heck the author was, why couldn't I?

Perhaps that last line was snarky...

But, this book is about 80% snark. It's as if fashion, snark, and The Devil Wears Prada had a baby. That baby would be this book. Kingsley has a wonderful and entertaining voice when she's writing what she knows or what she enjoys. Each chapter where in the heroine Lucy falls deeper and deeper into the celebrity-encrusted drug-laden world gets better and better. The characters are rich, the writing is sharp, and the exploits will make you want to rack your brain for the real celebrity Kingsley is talking about. But resist that urge to Google Kingsley's previous life as a celebrity friend. Kingsley's virtual life is tighter than Fort Knox. Even as a professional librarian I gave up the hunt. *Sigh*( I have a fierce hope Bella was really Brittany Spears...)

Anyway - Between the nuggets of Pure Goodness there were some stretches of, well, not goodness. You can see where Kingsley is a new author in the following:

1. The Secondary "Friend" Characters were flatter than pancakes and non-existent except when Lucy `needed' them. The friends Lucy pines for, wants to brag to, are generally stand-ins with which to measure her `celebrity life' to the normal life of an L.A.young thing trying to break into the biz. To cut them would have strengthened the tale. They never felt real to me anyway.
2. Time Passage - Warning: There is no accounting for how much time passes in Lucy's world. Chapters range from beginning either days or moments after the previous chapter to months later with a rare hint at how far we are apart. Don't be surprised if you start a chapter thinking it's a day later only to find that weeks have gone by! Using holidays, weather, time stamps - seriously, anything! would have moored the reader chronologically. It was frustrating not knowing the speed at which Lucy's story was progressing.

I did love that this read falls into the "New Adult" category. I personally would have eaten it up in the older teen/new 20′s space. If you love gossip rags you'll eat this story up! I ended it excited to see what a second, more focused, effort would be from this author. With some practice she could be a great Chick Lit go-to.

at great personal cost

This is a fictional account of the choice of a college student at Oxford to convert to Catholicism, at great personal cost. In those days, only those endorsing the established church, the Anglican Church, could take a degree. Since the degree was a gateway to a career, the cost was quite high. One finds a review of protestant versus catholic views of Christianity, and in a thousand little ways, one is introduced to the times, and to an undergraduate education at Oxford.

A Journey of Faith

The book was written over a hundred-sixty years ago, but has a lot of information for those interested in Catholic theology and customs. Blessed John Henry (Cardinal) Newman was himself a convert to the Catholic Church at a time in England when there was considerable oppositional suspicion between members of the Church of England (Anglican) and the Catholic Church. Oxford, at that time, prepared future Anglican ministers and discouraged any divergence toward Catholic theology, ostracizing those who persisted in any "Romish" tendencies.

This book, a work of fiction, is a story of a young man studying at Oxford, finding himself persuaded by various situations toward the Catholic position, converting, and facing much opposition from family and friends in the process. Some say Newman's characters closely resemble his own journey of faith, and in some ways mirror the experiences of converts in our own time. It was good reading, especially for Catholics and those who inquire of the Catholic faith.

Lost and Found

I must begin with a brief caveat. While this Ignatius edition sounds excellent (and I'll probably get it later), the edition I'm reading is that in the Oxford World's Classics series, with an introduction by Alan G. Hill, which is also excellent. Prof. Hill notes that Loss and Gain was groundbreaking for a Victorian novel, in quite unexpected ways. If one is expecting some sort of dry intra-church tussle, of interest to, at best, a handful of clerics, dressed up as a tenth rate novel, one would be advised to look for that fiction elsewhere. In his advertisement (disclaimer) to the ninth edition, Newman wrote he was "desirous of dissipating the fog of pomposity and solemn pretence," by showing "that those who were smitten with love of the Catholic Church were nevertheless as able to write common-sense prose as other men."
Or perhaps better, as Newman was one of the best writers of his century. As Hill says, "The verve and gusto of the writing reveal an extraordinary grasp of colloquial English idiom" and "A genial, magnanimous tone is evident throughout." "Rich in comic scenes and characters". Who does that sound like? -Dickens, of course. It can also be read as a Victorian period piece, he notes, or for it's university setting. The school story that comes to mind, of course, is Tom Brown's School-Days. But surprise! Newman's novel (1848) predates Thomas Hugh's work, published in 1857.
It boggles the mind to imagine the smooth, lilting cadences and effortless prose of "Apologia Pro Vita Sua", Newman's non-fiction, autobiographical work transferred to a novel, but here it is. It is our loss if this novel has been lost to the reading public, but only gain when once again found.

One of my favorites by Catherine Fisher

This fast paced novel is one of my favorites by Catherine Fisher. The story unfolds from multiple points of view, adding to the sense of mystery as the reader tries to figure out how each character ultimately relates to the story as a whole. The main plot follows Jake, a reckless teenage boy determined to escape his boarding school, go to Wintercombe Abbey, and confront his godfather Oberon Venn, who he believes murdered Jake's father. Jake's father and Venn were working on secret experiments involving something called the Chronoptika, and Jake believes that Venn killed his partner and best friend to keep the research secret. Venn is certainly ruthless, and willing to sacrifice anyone and anything to achieve his goals. However, what Jake discovers about his father, Venn, the Chronoptika and the secretive residents of Wintercombe Abbey will change his world, his future and possibly his past. This novel blends magic, science fiction, adventure and mystery seemlessly for an adventure that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the sequel.

A lot going on for one book

As a fan of Incarceron, I wanted to like this book, I really did. And it was decent, but...like Incarceron, it had its issues.

The book starts off with a fascinating premise--a boy out for revenge, a mysterious guardian. The name Oberon (Midsummer Night's Dream, anyone?) is already a clue that there might be some fae magic going on, so when more sci-fi elements get brought in, its a pleasant surprise. I personally always love to see the two combined, and I was also looking forward to Jake as a central character, since many YA books are written from the girl's point of view.

Jake initially intrigued me at first, but unfortunately, I quickly became bored of and disappointed in him. He starts off as a dangerous teenage boy, willing to do anything to get expelled from school. Eager to see why, I read on, only to discover that my questions were answered all too quickly as he immediately opened up to a teacher he barely knew. All of the sudden Jake was a big softy with little spine and a willingness to accept whatever explanation was told to him. Every now and then he went back to that fierce determination, but I saw nothing else of the dangerous boy I glimpsed in the first few pages.

The story was fast-paced, the plot interesting, but I think half the problem with this book is that there are so many plot points and sub-plots that the characters get lost in the story Fisher is trying to tell. I had a similar feeling with Incarceron and Sapphique, where there were so many mysteries that I lost track of them, and sometimes when secrets were "revealed," I still didn't really understand their significance. It's much the same with this book, where big "reveals" don't seem important to me, and all the information I really want to know is still being held out, hopefully for the next book. By the end I started to get confused about which character was doing what, as the POV kept switching so much and I just wanted to yell at them to start asking the right questions!

I obviously got a bit worked up by this book, but part of that is because I did still get into the story. I do still want to see what happens, and find out more answers. So if you're willing to get through the parts where the characters drive you a little bonkers, then I say go for it. In all likelihood, you'll still enjoy the read.

This was my first reading of book written by Catherine Fisher and I had no preconceptions. Except from the information contained in the Amazon overview abstract which peaked my interest. From my understanding, she has written a book called Incarceron, which I have yet to read. The Obsidian Mirror is adventure that combines Science Fiction in terms of time travel and fantasy. Tales that contain `Time travel' can be at times confusing, but Ms Fisher doesn't make it overtly too complicated. The narrative leaves many questions left unanswered, but there was enough revealed for the reader to enjoy the story. The obsidian mirror itself, is a time portal of sorts, and remains a mystery, but I am sure all will be revealed in the next instalment? The only irritant in this mix of themes, and simply refuses to fit, is the fairies. They might be colourful characters and are horribly creepy, but they seem be too be absolutely and totally an irrelevance to the narrative, and I can't understand their purpose in this story. Maybe their role will be clearer in the second book?

I am not too enamoured by a narrative that is told from of a multiple of points of view and I think I would have liked this book more if it were it told from Jake's perspective alone, and in first person. Third person narrative is my least favourite narrative choice here, this maybe me, but I feel you lose emotional bonds between the characters and the entire experience can come off being somehow seem cold and clinical in its delivery. For example the switching narration from Jake to Sarah and back, within a few short chapters with other narrative voices `jarred' the natural flow. Ms Fisher is an excellent writer with a good sense of pacing and wonderful imagination. Her sentences are short and clear, her style pleasingly concise, and yet she somehow avoids making it seem `wooden' in the telling. The Obsidian Mirror left so many questions unanswered and I look forward to the sequel.
