Don't Believe all the reviews
By Amazon Customer
I loved the first book Immortal City and was confused when I read the so-so reviews for Natural Born Angel. Luckily, I tried a sample and ended up buying the book. I had waited a long time oft this book and it lived up to my expectations. The reason I loved Maddie in the first book stays true in this book. She still believes in humanity and the real role of angels. Maddie still grows into herself in this book and into her angelic abilities. She is a very strong character, one you can look up to. Jackson is conflicted in this book which seems realistic.....what would you do if you lost a vital part of who you are? Many new players come into the mix as it is leading up to book 3. I still believe in Jackson and Maddie and can't wait for the next book. Don't believe the negative reviews, you don't want to miss out on a great book!

Not overly impressed
By Amanda Welling
First Impressions: Here is where I start to admit to myself that I don't think I'm into the whole angel genre anymore. I really liked the first book, Immortal City. In fact, if you are hesitant to read a book about angels, I would definitely recommend checking out this series above others that are currently out in the book market. It has a great balance between contemporary issues and fantasy issues that I think is a rare find in these sorts of stories. However, I procrastinated reading this book and it took me forever to finally finish it (seriously guys, over a MONTH). It didn't really have anything to do with the story itself, I just wasn't into it. It was an, "it's not you, it's me," scenario going on. The sad thing is that I was SO looking forward to Natural Born Angel. I was thrilled when I received an ARC for review. I needed to find out what happened next for Maddy and Jackson.
First 50 Pages: This is going to be shorter review because I feel like anything I say, will give everything away. I'll try to keep it short and sweet. Or maybe not so sweet because I had some issues with this book due to personal preferences. I wasn't thrilled with how the author handled the transition from the first book into this book. It seemed like most of what happened in Immortal City was forgotten about in Natural Born Angel. I was still looking for some closure on events that occurred at the end of Immortal City. I didn't really get much of anything. It almost felt like I could have skipped over the first book without too much of a problem. I like when things weave together more fluidly. Besides that hiccup, I still enjoyed the book and continued reading.
Characters & Plot: The detective scenes were a little hard to get through and I found myself skimming over them once or twice. The plot in this story is a bit iffy and I think it has been cursed with Middle-Book Syndrome. There IS a plot, but I guess what I'm trying hard to say is, is that it wasn't up-to-par with Immortal City.
I do have to give the author some credit where credit is due. The characters. I love them. No, seriously, they are great. Scott Speer knows how to perfectly blend together wonderful characters and give them each distinct voices. Not to mention, he basically blends together two genres in both books: contemporary and fantasy; and does so seamlessly. But, here is where the book lost me:
Love triangle. I knew it was coming as soon as Tom showed up in the book. Not only is there the introduction of a love triangle, Maddy and Jackson, the boy she fell head over heels in love with in the first installment, have ZERO chemistry in Natural Born Angel. Seriously, none. They are having major issues in this book and their relationship is pretty much non-existent. The problem? Tom and Maddy have ZERO chemistry, too. The relationship between them is a whole lot of blah and not much fun. If you're going to do a love triangle, at least make it worth while. The ending of this book completely threw me off because it just seemed totally random. You'll understand what I mean once you read this book!
Final Thoughts: I can't say that I was overly impressed with Natural Born Angel. It took me so long to finish it and I just wasn't happy at all with the introduction of the love triangle. I still stand by my statement about these books being good angel stories, and if love triangles don't bother you much, you will probably enjoy this book more than me. For what it's worth, I plan on continuing to read this series to see where things go or don't go. I love some things (the characters and the contemporary VS fantasy feel) about both books, so I'll give Mr. Speer another chance to bring this series back to life.

Disappointed
By SYoung
I really like the way this story was going through and after the first book but was super disappointed in this book. I really wanted to like it but the story line was boring and I found myself skimming through 60% of the book. My biggest disappointment was the poorly written in love triangle. At this point in Jackson and Maddy's relationship I feel like a love triangle is unnecessary and kind of annoying it makes me feel sorry for Jackson and dislike Maddy. I really tried to like this book but the only interesting part to me in the story line was the ending!
