About the Author
William Feigelman, PhD, is Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Nassau Community College (Garden City, New York), where he has taught for more than 44 years and still teaches part-time. Author and co-author of six books and more than 40 journal articles, he has written on a wide variety of social science subjects including child adoptions, youth alcohol and drug abuse, problem gambling, tobacco use and cessation, and intergroup relations. Since 2002, after his son Jesse's suicide, Dr. Feigelman has focused his professional writings on youth suicide and suicide bereavement. This work has appeared in "Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, Death Studies, Omega: Journal of Death and Dying" and "Illness, Crisis and Loss. "He is a member of the American Association of Suicidology and the Association for Death Education and Counseling, a frequent presenter at bereavement conferences in the U.S., Canada, and Japan, and a co-facilitator of a survivors' support group
Beverly Feigelman, ACSW, is Adjunct Professor of Social Work at Adelphi University (Garden City, New York). She also maintains a private psychotherapy practice, providing family and individual counseling. She is an educational consultant for the Bellmore-Merrick (Long Island, New York) School District, training graduate social work students for work in secondary school settings. Ms. Feigelman is a member of various suicide prevention organizations, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, SPAN-USA, and the American Association of Suicidology, and a co-facilitator of a survivors' support group. She is also author or co-author of several articles on suicide bereavement, addiction treatment, and social work education. Ms. Feigelman often presents on these topics at professional conferences. She is also Chairperson of the Long Island Chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups

The only book that describes problems parents face 5 or more years after the suicide of a child.

If you have actually lost a child to suicide, you'll find many dozens of books on the topic of "surviving suicide loss". After reading many of these, you'll find that unless the author personally has experienced a suicide loss, that the book won't be worth reading. In this case, two of the authors (Dr. William Feigelman and his wife) did experience the loss of a child, and it shows in their writing. There is much compassion in their writing, sourced no doubt from bitter personal experience.
The second thing you will discover is that almost every book deals with the time period from right at the moment of the suicide loss, to about 2 or 3 years later. But, for parents that have lost a child to suicide, the problems they face do not conveniently stop at the 2 or 3 year time limit. The vast majority of these parents wind up divorced, often 5 to 10 years after the suicide took place. There are many reasons for this, but I have found no book that deals with the struggles these parents face over that 10 year (or longer) time period. There are many very destructive psychological dynamics at play, and almost no research exists on this topic.
This book from Dr. Feigelman does attempt to describe the challenges that parents face in the 3 to 10 year time period, but his data set is quite small, and suffers from a severe "selection bias". (He only has about 550 people in his research group, and those were self-selected from groups like The Compassionate Friends. Worse, many of the losses were not suicides, but homicides, accidents, and losses to illness. The actual number of parents that were dealing with suicide loss in this group was actually quite small, and this greatly skews the results of any analysis of this groups' behaviors.) Dr. Feigelman does clearly admit to the small sample size, and the fact that it is hardly representative of the total population of families that have lost children to suicide. He does clearly identify this, and he attempts to compensate for it in his analysis of the information he collected from this group. But, as limited as this data set is, the data Dr. Feigelman presents is all that currently exists in print today. I cannot emphasize this strongly enough. If you are looking for information on the problems that parents face 5 or more years down the road, this book is currently all that exists.
Another point, this book is very "clinical", with lots of very dry statistics. It definitely is not a "here are the problems you are likely encounter, and here is some advice for how to deal with those challenges" kind of book. But again, it's all that exists on this topic. Sometimes knowing that you are likely to face a particular problem at least keeps it from being a total surprise. ANY information is better than nothing, and and I have said, currently this book is all that exists.
This book does give excellent coverage to an analysis of what resources parents turn to for help, and in particular to "peer-led suicide support groups". Dr. Feigelman analyzes how these groups form, what advantages they offer to survivors, why people join and why people leave these groups. If you are a facilitator or are otherwise seriously involved with any such support group, the insights Dr. Feigelman offers on these groups are spot-on, and worth serious consideration.

Solid study for scholarly research

I find this book helpful in developing an academic research study. I would not recommend it for anyone seeking a self-help bereavement text, because that is not the intended purpose of the book.

DEVESTATING LOSSES

I found this book to be very technical,loaded with statistics and other information intended for mental health care professionals.It is a text book and not a guide for grieving parents. There was nothing in the tile of the book to suggest this.
