Superb installment of Pia and Dragos' Story
By Janet Samuels
I got this in the mail and immediately sat down, ignored everything else and read through from start to finish. I was so happy with this installment of the series! I fell in love with Pia and Dragos in Dragon Bound (the first book in the series). I've read two of the three other books in the series (poor reviews kept me away from Serpent's Kiss) and they were good but Pia and Dragos have been my favorite couple. Sine this book focuses on them, I've been looking forward to this book and it didn't disappoint. Pia is pregnant and travelling to the Elven Demesne to try to negotiate a truce (as they are still upset with Dragos from the first book). Dragos is hosting the Sentinel Games to find new sentinels - and all 7 slots are open as the 5 remaining sentinels have to "reapply" for the job.
The first half of the book has Pia and Dragos separated. Pia is travelling to South Carolina to interact with the Elves and has six Wyrs from their Special Forces on hand as bodyguards. Dragos is home overseeing the Sentinel Games, although we don't see much of what is going on with the games (just hear about the winners and a few details). However, they do have some contact and I liked that we got to see both of their points of view. Most of the focus concerns what is going on in the Elven Demesne. Pia has come to meet with Calondir, the Elven High Lord. However, he is meeting other Elves in a magical forested area ("Lithrithriel Wood"). So Pia agrees to go there and meet with him. About half-way through, Pia and Dragos are reunited and work together to overcome an issue in the Elven Demesne.
The characters all seemed true to who they were. I like how strong Pia is and she isn't one of those women who appears strong but then always needs to be rescued. She might not be the strongest fighter but she has brains. I loved the first chapter where Pia decides she has to confront Eva, the alpha of her bodyguard, to establish respect. She is strong willed at times and she can stand her ground to convince Dragos of what needs to be done. But she also listens and isn't one of those heroines who are "too stupid to live". Towards the end, she wants to reveal something to everyone; Dragos thinks it is a bad idea. I like how they have evolved in their partnership so that each talks about their point of view. They listen to each other, respect each other and come to a decision. It was great to see some of the give and take needed for each of them to adjust to being in this relationship. While we still have the heat of their relationship that was in the first book, it does feel like the characters grew in this book. Also, the previous split between Rune and Dragos was touched on and resolved (even though I didn't read Serpent's Kiss, I could still follow what went on). We got to meet a lot of new and interesting supporting characters, several of whom could be featured in upcoming books in the series (I'm hoping we learn more about Quentin).
I had two quibbles with the book. First is that the confrontation with the "bad guy" felt very anti-climactic. After reading the resolution of it, I thought "really, that's how it is resolved??" Second, "Peanut" just seems too advanced and sentient. I understand instincts (like trying to save your mom like he did in the last book or warning of danger), but especially towards the end, it is a little too much for me (won't give away spoilers). But these are minor irritants in an overall really strong edition to the series. Note that while you can still follow the story well even if you've missed one of the books in the series, you really need to have read Dragon Bound to appreciate this one. In addition to reading Dragon Bound to appreciate Pia and Dragos's relationship and the growth of it, there are a lot of references you won't understand otherwise (to the infamous penny, Peanut, her relationship with the harpy Aryal, etc.).

A glance at Dragos and Pia's HEA

LORD'S FALL is a great love story with a hint of Hunger Games element with some Civil War action. As usual, Thea Harrison did not disappoint. She has given her readers a chance to peak beyond Pia and Dragos' Happy-Ever-After (HEA) and a glance at what's up and up with the Wyr Demesne.
It has been 7 months since Pia and Dragos have mated. If you have been following the Elder Races series, you know that Pia and Dragos are expecting Peanut and she is now taking on the role of Dragos' mate. Her first mission is to repair the Wyr and Elves demesne's relationship. Turns out that she'll be doing more than just fixing a demesne quarrels, she'll also be in the middle of a civil war between the Elves and their Ancients. Unfortunately, she will be doing this mission on her own and away from her mate. It's something both she and Dragos must overcome.
Meanwhile, at The Callubre Towers, Dragos' Seven Sentinels are down to five. His top two, Tiago has mated with the Dark Fae Queen, Nininane aka Trix and Rune has mated with Carling, the Vampyre Queen. The need to replace them was inevitable so Dragos held the Sentinel Games. That's right boys and girls, there will be new characters to look forward to. The Sentinel Games are pretty awesome and watching Dragos do his public appearance without Pia was pretty cute. I like that Thea keeps his character at a constant. He's still very powerful, rich, sexy, overprotective but very sweet to his mate. He is the reason I am addicted to this series.
It was brilliant how Ms. Harrison brought Dragos and Pia back even after their HEA in Dragon Bound. This just shows you, even in our fantasy world, an HEA still needs a lot of work to keep going. There are also a few new relationships that are rekindled, few that are obviously brewing to be something more and new friendships were formed. This hopefully ensures us more of this world. If you have not read Dragon Bound, I highly suggest you do so. Pia and Dragos' characters and relationship building started there and it's a shame to miss their courtship.

Decent Read...but not all that great
By S. Brown
I really enjoyed "Dragon Bound" and loved the romance between Pia and Dragos; however, "Lord's Fall" fell a bit flat for me. It's a good read and I actually read the book twice before writing this review just see if I felt the same about the book after the second read. Part of the problem is the secondary characters are not very interesting. I would have liked to see more focus on the Sentinel Games, which was the most intriguing part of the story for me, but that actually took a back seat very early on in the story. I also had a problem with the way Eva, one of Pia's bodyguards, was written. I dislike when author's insert a lot of slang to make the character more "street-wise". I especially dislike this when this is done for black characters because it's...just stupid and kind of racist. I also wasn't that intrigued by the plot with the Elves and found the whole thing a bit trite. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of good in this book. Pia and Dragos make for a great pair and Dragos is a yummy hero who is alpha to the core, but their union was already sealed so there wasn't anything exciting or new to be had. There is a surprise ending which I enjoyed and won't spoil. I also enjoyed the addition of a few new faces like Quentin, Alex and the surprise character at the end. I hope to see more of all these characters in future books.
Again, "Lord's Fall" is not a bad read and if you like the Elder series then it's a good addition to your book shelf or electronic library.
