Williams was a child of Black Panther–era Oakland, with its countercultural challenges to the racial status quo. Her father was a Panther who served time in prison, her mother eventually succumbed to drinking and withdrew from family life, and her sister died a violent death. Traumatized by poverty and neglect at 16, Williams took the opportunity to flee to Santa Monica to live with Jane Fonda, whom she’d known for several years through a summer arts camp. What followed was an extraordinary life of wealth and privilege as she was incorporated into the lives and families of Jane Fonda and Ted Turner. An adventurer and idealist, Williams went on to travel to Africa, start a foundation to benefit the Lost Boys of Sudan, hike the Appalachian Trail, and work for six months in Antarctica, all the while testing herself. But her greatest challenge awaited her back in Oakland. Could she ever reconcile with her biological family and somehow blend them into her eclectic life? A well written memior!

"The Lost Daughter" written by Mary Williams is an excellent read. It is funny, insightful, well written, humorous and candid. She did a great job sharing her story of triumph over adversity.
For those who are hesitant about reading this book based on their thoughts on Jane Fonda; this book is not centered around Jane. It's about Mary's life and the moments, situations and various people that helped to define who she is today.
Her testimony will hopefully inspire others to be bold & fearless. I'm inspired.

Its amazing Jane took so much heat for her views during the Viet Nam war, and I know some to this date haven't forgiven her for her views even though she has apologized many times. This book just shows another side of her that she never publicized, I just love her HEART!!! - I am truly glad Mary wrote this book as well.

I happeded to see Mary's story on Oprah.com and immediately ordered the book. While I may not have shared Mary's experience, I am from Oakland and grew up in the same time period as she. I was encouraged by Mary's courage and resilience in spite of her circumstances. I would highly recommend this book. Get ready to BE INSPIRED.
