Not quite up to par

I randomly picked up "The Templar Legion" at a Wal-Mart a few years back. After reading through it I was hooked and dove head first into the world of John "Doc" Holliday. I quickly bought up the first four books in the series (Templar Legion is book five)and read them in chronological order. Each book is was engrossing, detailed, and adventurous, it left me wanting more. In fact, if I could give one flaw to the series, it is that the books are TOO engrossing to the point where I wait a year for the next installment to come out just to read it in a few days and play the waiting game again. The same thing happened to me here between "The Valley of the Templars" and "The Lost City of the Templars". Unfortunately I found myself a bit disappointed with this installment of the Templar series. The focus is mainly supposed to be fixed on Eddie and Doc, as it was in the last two books,with other good guys and bad buys mingling in the main story. There will be character offshoots here and there, as there were in the previous installments. I feel "The Lost City of the Templars" seriously deviated from that way of writing. I felt a lot of time was wasted on characters and arcs that did not matter. There were characters that countless portions of chapters were spent building up, only to be slaughtered later on without much fanfare. Also it is a bit late in the game to be introducing so many new characters. Will they have an impact on later books? The ends to many arcs in this book simply did not match the means. Doc and Eddie were just a part of the bunch as opposed to the main focus similar to previous installments. For me the greatest travesty of this book was the lack of insight into the next installment of the series that is usually at the end of each book. I searched online and could not find anything on a 9th book in the Templar series. I certainly hope there is on as, despite what this book lacks, it still furthered key story lines and added some interesting plot twists. I would recommend the entire series to anyone, and if you happen to read this book first, do not let it tarnish the rest of the series for you.

An Enjoyable, Fast Read Until The Poor Ending

This was by far, the best written, though the shortest of the series. The pace was fast without a lot of rambling exposition. The transitions were swift and things moved with the blink of an eye. I enjoyed reading this story right until the end. I didn't worry about suspending my disbelief because I know just enough about those subjects to know I don't care to know more. It's just a story, not a historical document.
The writing was solid third-person though the author did a bit of head-hopping here and there, enough that I noticed, but not enough to jerk me out of the story. I found the editing fine, but not top-notch. I had to pause a few times over some words that were either misspelled or misplaced. Otherwise, the writing quality wasn't bad at all.
My big beef was the crummy ending. The payoff let me down. Maybe the author thought it had to be that way to make things more realistic, or maybe he just got tired of certain things. Maybe even fans told him to do something like that. I don't know, but I hated it. I may be in a minority but it ruined what could've been one of his best stories, with no bull to slog through. A right-to-the-point thriller that kept me glued to my seat, only to slap me in the face. I hope the next one (which I still anxiously await) does a better job.
Only recommended for those that like bittersweet endings.

The Templar legends ,my favorite historical subject.

The plot line is tight ,moves very quickly and piques my interest keeping me thoroughly engrossed to reach its conclusion . The only problem that I ,personally, found issue with was knowing which book follows which book. Paul Christopher is one of my favorite authors and is right in line next to James Rollins.
