It takes a lot of work to plan a wedding—and even more to save a marriage—but in Valentine, Oklahoma, there's always someone to help you keep your chin up

Emma Cole's son is getting married, and she's determined to make everything perfect—even if that means asking her estranged husband to come home and pretend they're still together. John may be an imperfect husband, but he's a devoted dad. He's happy to oblige Emma—especially since he didn't really much like living apart from her anyway. Now he wants a second chance.

As Emma sorts through the mess of her own marriage, she puts her heart into planning Valentine's wedding of the century. But there's one big problem: the bride's ambitious mother wants more for her daughter than marriage to a small-town boy.

As the wedding approaches, the many meanings of love, commitment and happiness capture the hearts of folks in town. And surrounded by the warmth and spirit of her neighbors, Emma starts to see new beginnings instead of endings.

From Publishers Weekly
Life in Matlock's nostalgic Valentine, Okla., is a Bradburyesque vision with drugstore soda fountains, old-timey radio shows filling the airwaves and a cast of characters who wouldn't be out of place in Lake Wobegon. Her latest charmer, the seventh installment of the smalltown series (after Cold Tea on a Hot Day), finds Valentine preparing for the wedding of Johnny Ray Berry, popular son of Emma Lou and John Cole (scion of the local Quick Start convenience store empire), to Gracie Louise Kinney, daughter of Sylvia, the snooty owner of several upmarket fashion boutiques. Sylvia is none too pleased with the red-neck white boy her daughter has chosen to marry and tries to sabotage the affair by finally revealing the identity of Gracie's father, a black Creole. As the union is thrown into question, the main attraction is the hilarious love dance between Johnny's estranged parents, who've put their divorce on hold for Johnny's sake. Matlock conjures a sweet spell accented by tart drama, as refreshing and delightful as a lemony sweet tea. (May)

From Booklist
Just after Emma and John Cole Berry separate, their only son, Johnny, announces his engagement to Gracie. So the good parents welcome the happy couple together, and begin counseling to patch up their own marriage, but Gracie’s controlling mother has bigger plans for her. Meanwhile, other denizens in Matlock’s beloved Valentine, Oklahoma, are working their way through their own heart troubles. Belinda’s handsome, sexy husband suddenly wants to talk rather than make love, and her mother, Vella, is carrying on scandalously with Jaydee Mayhall. A common bond is Winston and Willie Lee’s old-fashioned radio show, which keeps the folks of Valentine entertained. Matlock’s heartwarming contemporary Southern romance owes much of its appeal to the folksy, small-town atmosphere she creates. Longtime readers will enjoy revisiting Valentine and its many colorful characters, even as this novel stands on its own merits and thus can serve as an excellent introduction to Matlock’s work. --Lynne Welch

Just a delight to read!
By Sharon Galligar Chance
Have you ever sat down with a book, and it felt like you were sitting on a porch swing, chatting with good friends and catching up on their lives?

That's exactly the feeling you get when you pick up a book by Curtiss Ann Matlock. Her stories about the folks in Valentine, Oklahoma make the reader feel like they've come home for a family reunion. And everybody's there - the sweet old uncle who has the delightful radio show everyone loves, the aunts who cluck about making sure everyone is fed, and the kids running in and out between everyone's feet.

In the latest in the Valentine series, "Chin Up, Honey," the story focuses on Emma and John Cole Berry. Emma and John Cole have been having some marital problems, to the point that John Cole has not been home in a while. But when their son, Johnny, announces that he and his sweet girlfriend Gracie are getting married, Emma knows that she has to put aside her disagreements with her husband in order to plan the wedding of the year. After all, there are parties to plan, invitations to design, a pool to be installed - you know, important things.

But when Emma finds out that Gracie's mother, the elegant businesswoman Sylvia from up North, doesn't approve of Johnny - well, let's just say the mother lioness instinct kicks in and Emma goes into overdrive trying to prove to Sylvia that their family is just fine and dandy. But her anxiety may prove to be unnecessary. All it takes is getting the stuck-up lady down to experience the loving ways of the folks in Valentine to get her to loosen up a bit. A day at the Glorious Women's retreat, a few glasses of sweet tea and Sylvia's good to go! (If only it were that easy.)

Meanwhile Brother Winston's radio show is getting noticed by the folks at the "Today Show," there is a pack of kids running around town stealing things, and down at the drugstore there is a raging debate on whether you are supposed to wear panties underneath your pantyhose or not. Yep, it's always exciting in Valentine, Oklahoma. Never a dull day passes.

Curtiss Ann Matlock has a unique gift of bringing her readers right into her stories, making them comfortable and wanting to stay a while. With just the right touch of Southern hospitality, a heaping helping of love and a generous dash of humor, her novels are instant classics. "Chin Up, Honey" is one of the best of the series, which is saying a lot since the others are delightful as well. I can't wait until it's time to visit Valentine again.

Love Curtiss Ann Matlock. Did NOT like this book.
By Claire
I have read all of Curtiss Ann Matlock's books and enjoyed most of them. I read them for that wonderful ability she has to bring you into the life of Valentine, OK (in this case) and it's inhabitants. But this one was hard to get through and the storyline was only slightly interesting and this time that "homey" feel was just too drawn out. The discussion re pantyhose was fun for a couple of paragraphs but three pages?? That was the problem all the way through: way too long. My other problem was that I really didn't like the "heroine"; as soon as she started going overboard I started to get irritated with her and soon my annoyance was such that I put the book down to read another one before I went back to it. I love this author, she can write so well and usually I read her books in one sitting. This one is too long, too slow and I just can't recommend it.

You’ll be delighted with the wit and humor of three stories of marriage plans that don’t go as expected. Clara Fields tries to escape a difficult situation by finding a bride for a storekeeper’s son, only to discover that the task is more complicated than she thought. The shotgun wedding that results from Opal Speck’s hasty confession—that Adam Grogan is the father of her unborn baby—ends up creating more problems than it solves. Gavin Miller’s mistaken proposal to the wrong cousin leads to tension when Marguerite Chandler—the wrong bride—and Daisy—the right bride—both arrive in town.

Great books!
By mrslassiter
Love her writing style. Easy read for right before bed. Make sure you read the prequel. You can understand these without reading them, but it is more fun because you know the back story to many of the other characters. I love how her stories continue like that. I always want to know what happens to so and so or what happened after happily ever after. Well in her books, you do!

Books Got Better and Better
By Voracious Reader
Prairie Promises, the three book series - 5

Each of these books in the series got a little better to me. When I finished the first one, I almost regretted buying the set, because it wasn't much better than the free ones I get. It finished strong, however, and the second one was even better. I think Opal and Adam turned out to be my favorite couple in the whole series. The last one had plenty of funny or delightful moments, and Gavin was certainly a different kind of hero. All in all, I feel like I did get my money's worth.

The Bride Bargain - 4

When Uncle Uriah died, Clara Fields and Aunt Doreen sold what little they had and joined a wagon train to Oregon. They wanted to escape the bad memories of the staunch man who'd browbeaten them to keep them under his thumb. The wagon master wasn't much better, and he left them behind when one of their oxen ran off. He thought they should have a man to look after them anyway. When they land in Buttonwood, Josiah, the store owner, gives them jobs in exchange for room and board. Then his son, Saul, comes out to stay the summer, and things get all muddled as Josiah tries to manipulate the situation for everyone's benefit.

At first, I thought some of the language sounded awkward and stilted. I found some other little problems, too. Why would Clara's hands be chilled when she had just been complaining about the August heat? No one would have called breakfast "break my fast" in 1855. Neither would they have known to scrub down a room to be used by the doctor or to use alcohol as a disinfectant. I thought a "bag" and "poke" is the same thing, but Saul asked which one to use. "Further" was used for "farther," and Midge commented on how soft the mattress filled in corn husks was. If you've ever tried such a mattress, you would not describe it as soft, even if it seemed comfortable. I was pretty disappointed with the story at first, but the more I read the better it got, until the ending was quite good.

The Bride Backfire - 5

The feud between the Specks and the Grogans heat up, fanned by some members and doused by others. When the Specks capture Adam Grogan sneaking around their property, Opal Speck tries to save him but soon realizes her father is still going to pull the trigger. She does the only thing she can think of on the spur of the moment to save the man she'd developed a tenderness for. She says he's the father of her unborn baby, which causes her father to use his shotgun to ensure a wedding, instead of taking Adam's life. She didn't imagine all the problems that would come up because of that one moment of compassion. Has she ruined her chance of every being Adam's true wife, even though she's still an innocent?

Although I found this one to be more grabbing than THE BRIDE BARGAIN, much of the plot was based on misunderstanding because of lies and lack of communication. Some of it didn't seem at all logical. For example, why wouldn't Opal tell Adam that Larry had punched her in the stomach instead of letting him think the two were having an affair? There were also a few awkward sentences or fragments, such as, "A beatific smile made sinister by the scar bisecting his face." All in all, however, I found this an interesting read and gave it 4.5, which rounded up to 5 stars.

The Bride Blunder - 5

Gavin Miller had moved from Baltimore to Buttonwood four years ago to set up his grist mill and establish his business. Now that he'd accomplished that, he wrote to Daisy back in Baltimore, and, since it was a proposal, he used her full name, "Marguerite," but he'd forgotten one important detail. Daisy's cousin, Marge, who lived in the same household, also had the name Marguerite Chandler. When the proposal arrives, the women think the proposal is to Marge, because Daisy is getting married, and they'd sent Gavin an invitation, something he hadn't seen. Gavin had been a good friend to both women, and Marge has long held him in her heart, so she accepts, setting off a chain of misunderstandings and blunders.

This book was the best of the three to me. Gavin's grandmother is a hoot, and some of the comments had me smiling in delight. Marge's tenaciousness to not marry Gavin because she wasn't his first choice went on for too long, but there was also a romance developing between Midge and Amos, which kept the book from bogging down too much. The biggest complaint I have is that neither couple ever made a declaration of love, and I think that's a bit disappointing in a romance. Still, these last two novels redeemed the series for me and made it worth buying.

Enjoyable reading!
By Joanne Stetler
This series is well-written and captures the reader's interest throughout. It became easy to empathize with the main characters and push forward to see what became of them and their dilemmas as the romances were blossoming or being derailed. Enjoyable reading!

The Red-funnelled Boat (Picador poetry), by Peter Armstrong

The Red-Funnelled Boat charts a course through richly varied territory, from theological obsession to the paranoid fantasies of the armchair footballer, the vernacular hell of mental illness and the author’s lyrical yearning for the elsewheres of the Hebrides and the cinematic Midwest. These precisely imagined, disturbing and fascinating poems establish Armstrong as a powerfully assured new voice, and a phrase-maker of startling originality.

‘Armstrong’s is indeed an excellent collection. Though his allegiances – which seem to me wholly natural – reach back to Auden and Durrell, he is very much his own man, with individuality sometimes pressed as far as undoubted quiddity. Throughout the book the sheer presence of places and denser poems are impressive and demanding at once and the balance between the particular and the characteristic nicely held; though perhaps I am most moved by some of the shorter, more lyrical poems, where the language is made into a real sculpture: this truly is authority at its least questionable. Such poems are rather like sounds forming themselves from invisible thoughts and feelings, and emerging before the reader’s eyes’ Peter Porter

An excellent comprehensive and common sense look at obesity and it's treatment
By J T Cooper
This textbook can give the average physician, physician's assistant and nurse practitioner a command of the techniques needed for effective obesity treatment. It is written by a group of bariatric physicians who share their diverse knowledge with the reader. The book covers a lot of practical issues in the treatment of obesity and is equalled only by Dr. George Bray's Handbook of Obesity as a guideline for those who want to know the proper way to succeed in bariatrics. Just about every important issue is covered, including the workup, management and long term maintenence of the obese patient.

A Little Change of Face, by Lauren Baratz-Logsted

I need to change my life. On the surface, it doesn't look too bad. Great body, check. Pretty face, check. Job, check. Chicken pox. Check.

Stuck in her Danbury, Connecticut, condo in self-imposed exile until she's contagion-free, Scarlett Jane Stein keeps circling around to a passing comment her friend Pam made: how everything (read: men) comes to Scarlett just because she's attractive.

Is it true? All her life she's thought that she was fun to be around, that people liked her. Was it only because she was pretty (say it—because she's got incredible breasts)? Or is Pam, tired of playing second fiddle, now playing her? All Scarlett knows is that she's never found the man she believes is out there, her One True Love. So maybe Scarlett needs to change things up.

So it's goodbye, Scarlett and hello, dowdier, schlumpier Lettie Shaw. And with her new look, new name, new home and new job, is there a chance that Lettie-née-Scarlett will find someone who loves her for who she is inside? Or has Scarlett's little change of face turned into the biggest mistake of her life?

From Booklist
Scarlett Jane Stein has always turned men's heads. With her long, black hair and perfect breasts, she draws attention wherever she goes. But an adult case of the chicken pox and the words of her envious friend Pam make Scarlett start to wonder if her looks, not her personality, are the only reason men like her. So Scarlett opts for a "makeunder," cutting off her long hair and dressing in dowdy clothing. Determined to truly reinvent herself, Scarlett quits her job at the Danbury Library, changes her name to Lettie Shaw, and gets herself hired at the smaller Bethel Library. She sets her sights on Saul, a handsome investment adviser she meets in a bar who, sure enough, just wants to be friends, that is, until Scarlett defrumps at a Halloween party. But one of the library's patrons--Steve Holt, a window painter--seems to be taking to Lettie just as she is. Baratz-Logsted offers a clever twist on makeover fiction. Kristine Huntley

I wanted to like this, I really did...
By CoffeeGurl
Thirty-nine-year-old librarian Scarlett Jane Stein (named after Scarlett O'Hara, of course) is drop-dead gorgeous. She is a petite brunette with a slim, fit bod and perfect breasts. Men line up at bars to buy her drinks. In short, Scarlett has no idea how the other side of life -- the plain or simply ugly side -- lives, and her "Default Best Friend" Pam makes sure she does. She challenges Scarlett to look as unattractive and unappealing as possible to see if men still like her. Scarlett agrees to do it; she wants to know if men want her for her personality and not just because of her breasts. So Scarlett turns into Lettie Shaw -- a plain woman who wears thick glasses, shapeless dresses and a boyish haircut. With her new persona, she meets two attractive men, Saul and Steve. One is a superficial jerk, the other one is Mr. Boy Next Door. Will Scarlett/Lettie know the difference? In her misguided Extreme-Makeover-in-reverse experiment, she discovers not only how others perceive her and women's looks in general, but how she sees herself.

I get what the author tries to do with this book. I can appreciate how different this is from cookie-cutter chick-lits out there. Most of the characters aren't very likable (especially Pam. What a petty, jealous person! And how on earth did Scarlett not see through her?), including the heroine, whom I had a hard time identifying with for most of the novel. The only thing she and I have in common is that we love books... and that we're both vertically challenged (I, too, am only five feet tall)... and we're brown-eyed brunettes... and the breasts thing rings a bell. Okay, okay, so we do have a few things in common, but the similarities end there. I appreciate her personality flaws and the fact that she cannot see what is so patently obvious. We've all been there at some point in our lives. The thing is that I liked the premise, appreciated the message, but disliked the execution. I couldn't get into this novel, which is a shame, for Lauren Baratz-Logsted is a talented writer. I LOVED her novel Vertigo and I really wanted to love this one too. Alas, I didn't. One of the chapters starts out with something along the lines of, "I bet you're dying to know about my breasts." Uh, no! Have lunch with one of your friends and have her talk to you about her breasts and see how fun that is. Only men would find the aforementioned topic interesting. Anyway, I bought How Nancy Drew Saved My Life and I have my fingers crossed, hoping that book will be better than this one.

A Little Change of Face, Indeed
By shajopri
This is my second of Lauren's novels to read, and I'm beginning to know what to expect from her -- gleeful wit, sweet yet wacky heroines, and characters who do the most illogical things for very logical reasons. With creations that lie in that intersection between completely relatable and unbelievably insane, we laugh and sympathize with her protagonists even as we gawk in shock at their actions. A Little Change of Face is no different, the main character, tired of superficial attention for being so beautiful decides to give herself an inverted makeover and see how her life changes. Along her adventure, we see how the protagonist, Scarlett, and her alter-ego, Lettie hierarchize her best friends (the real best friend, the default best friend) as many women secretly do, get a satiracal view into pseudo-intellectual women's books clubs, and are privty to her by turns insightful, juvenile, and keyed-up reactions to men. It is the treatment of Lettie's friends that seems to draw the most flack in this book. If it matters, I am Black, among other things, and I found T.B. to be satire, which means, if you think her role in the book as the non-standard English talking accessory is racist, you're right! Lauren is showing how the use of minority characters as marginalized, cliched stereotypes is wrong, so she names the character T.B. so that we acknowledge the character as an unjust creation. It would be more racist to have called the character Susan or Molly and acted as if her stereotypical behavior was meant as realism -- like, for example, the indigenous and black people in the works of Isabel Allende. Then we would too be a party to racist behavior by reading the book without any sense of the problematic. I suggest that people who don't like this book b/c of T.B. watch Spike Lee's Bamboozled. This black director creates a blackface show in his movie not to say blackface is okay but to skewer, through satire, stereotypical black television. This book is indeed a little change of face, it's warm, witty, joyful chick-lit that decides to get a bit political. A worthy read.

Disliked Characters Too Much to Enjoy This Read
By M. E. Wood
Thirty nine year old Scarlett Jane Stein is a librarian in Danbury, Connecticut. Scarlett has always been a beautiful girl. She has a great job, men drool over her and she has a great best friend, who is also beautiful, but unfortunately lives on the other side of the globe. I say unfortunately because her "default best friend" Pam has made Scarlett believe men only like her for her looks and if they got a chance to know her they wouldn't be interested. Pam wants to help her test this theory by making her over to look unattractive. She wants to get rid of Scarlett's body hugging clothes, pristine makeup, contacts and luscious hair. She'd even bind her breasts if Scarlett would let her. To make this new configuration work Scarlett also changes her name to Lettie Shaw, changes jobs and moves from her condo to an abode in a neighbouring borough.

As Scarlett undergoes these changes Pam undergoes some of her own. Beautifying herself; perhaps to take over Scarlett's place. She enjoys the changes a little bit too much, "Pam surveyed my reflection in the mirror with satisfaction--the shapeless mauve dress, my short hair, my glasses--the same reflection that caused me such unease because I felt as though I didn't know this woman."

When Scarlett... ur... um.. Lettie continues to attract men in her lopped off hair and moomoo Pam becomes increasingly frustrated. Her jealousy becomes obvious, "Oh, shit," Pam muttered. "It doesn't matter what I do to you, does it? Someone still finds you attractive."

Throughout all this Scarlett/Lettie keeps her "best girlfriend", who she grew up with, informed of the changes. Best girlfriend thinks Pam has ulterior motives but Scarlett/Lettie seems blind to them. She's so worried about her friend she travels to rescue her from this so called "friend". When Lettie begins to question, Pam insists, "I'm your friend. I'm trying to help you find out if people like you merely for what you look like and not who you are."

Scarlett/Lettie begins to see changes in herself and learn more about herself as Lettie than she did as Scarlett. At one point she gets locked up in a split personality you think will land her in an institution but she recovers. This story isn't without love interests. There's Saul the business guy and Steve the artist. Most of Scarlett/Lettie's relationships have been about sex and most particularly her breasts (men love her breasts... Scarlett loves her breasts). She has never really had someone say she was funny, smart or good company. Lettie has opened Scarlett up to a whole new life and she's enjoying it. Her problem is combining the two lives and deciding on which man she loves and who loves her for who she is but will they forgive the deception?

I'm on a "that" tangent lately and can't seem to get it out of my head when I'm reading, especially if it's blatantly overused. This book had it's "that" moments, "it seems equally likely that that same culture that built the Parthenon and that treats flying tableware as objects..." The settings were carefully considered but I didn't find the antics of this thirty-nine-year old believable: ducking behind trees, playing a post office game. She is judgemental, self involved and immature, making it hard to like her. By the end she learns her assumptions about others aren't what they seem and gains perspective not only on others but on herself. But by then it was too late, my interest in her was beyond saving. Oral lipid-based formulations are attracting considerable attention due to their capacity to facilitate gastrointestinal absorption and reduce or eliminate the effect of food on the absorption of poorly water-soluble, lipophilic drugs. Despite the obvious and demonstrated utility of these formulations for addressing a persistent and growing problem of major significance, the pharmaceutical industry has been slow to apply and further develop this technology. This title provides a comprehensive summary of the theoretical and practical aspects of oral lipid-based formulations for use in industry, and provides further insights into a developing technology expected to assume increasing prominence in years to come.

If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance (Country Cooking School Mystery Book 2), by Paige Shelton

At Gram’s Country Cooking School in Broken Rope, Missouri, Isabelle “Betts” Winston and her grandmother share the secrets of delicious home-style recipes. But there’s one secret they keep from their classes—their ability to talk to ghosts from the town’s colorful past…

Betts and Gram agree to help their friend Jake at Broken Rope’s Historical Society by accommodating some foodie tourists for the night and occupying them with cooking lessons. It couldn’t be worse timing when the pair encounter the ax-wielding ghost of Sally Swarthmore, one of Broken Rope’s legendary murderers, who pleads with Betts to help find her diary--a diary that could prove that Sally was really a victim, not a villain.

But they soon have a modern-day murder on their hands when one of the tourists turns up dead with a noose around his neck and two other tourists are nowhere to be found. Now Betts needs to put the cooking classes on the back burner to untangle two knotty mysteries and rope in a cold-blooded killer.

Chapter 1

“They want us to keep them all here?” Gram said. “Where in the Sam Hill do they expect everyone to sleep?” “On the floor, I guess,” I said.

“On the floor? In the kitchen? I don’t understand, Isabelle. How in the world did they even think to ask us? This is a cooking school, not a hotel, for Jack’s sake.”

Gram had been cleaning. Her short gray hair was hidden by a red bandana, and her Harvard T-shirt had a giant wet spot right in the middle. She wore bright yellow rubber gloves and smelled of bleach. We were conducting our annual mid- summer ritual of scrubbing every single spot of her cooking school. Midsummer was the perfect time. We were on a one- week hiatus from our nighttime classes, and our daytime classes weren’t set to begin for another month and a half. We’d already sent out acceptance letters to our fall students, and we had this small break before our night class on everything potatoes,

“Mash Away, but Respect Me in the Morning,” was to begin.

“I believe it was Jake’s idea,” I said.

Jake was my best friend and Broken Rope’s fake sheriff and town historian. He was very active with the tourism bureau as well. When you’re a self-made millionaire you can do pretty much whatever you want.

“Jake? What was he thinking?” Gram said as she snapped off one of the gloves.

“He thought it would be bad business to turn away a tour bus. It’s only for one night and then the hotel will have the rooms available. Someone messed up the reservations. The tour group was going to cancel their stop, but Jake heard they were a bunch of foodies on a trip across country. He told them your school was here and thought we might work in a free lesson of some sort and have a sleepover.”

Gram blinked. “I’ll ask again, what was he thinking? Sleeping on the floor and offering a lesson? Won’t we be breaking about a thousand food safety regulations? Come on, Isabelle, you should know this stuff.”

Gram was referring to my short and incomplete time in law school.

“I didn’t make it to the food safety stuff,” I said. Food safety wasn’t a part of law school, so even if I hadn’t dropped out I wouldn’t have been any better versed in the ins and outs of slumber parties held in cooking schools, but I didn’t want to go into detail when she was so riled up.

Gram sighed. “What kind of lesson?”

Maybe she was warming to the idea.

“Don’t know. I was thinking something slumber-party- like. Fondue, dips, twice-baked bacony potatoes. We’ll be teaching all things potatoes in a week anyway. We could practice a little,” I said.

“Well.” She hesitated a long time. I’m sure she was turning it every which direction in her mind, but bottom line, Gram liked to be cooperative, in a stubborn Gram way, but cooperative nonetheless. “I guess that might work. Foodies, huh?”

“That’s what Jake said.” It was my turn to pause. “You haven’t mentioned how you feel about the free part.”

“Oh, I’ll make Jake pay. He’s got plenty of money. He can buy the supplies. I’ll happily provide the lessons free of charge, but he can buy the groceries.”

“I’m sure he’ll do that.”

Jake’s fortune had been obtained via the stock market. While most of the rest of his friends, me included, were off at college, Jake was mastering things like calls and puts and annual reports. I was sure he would have bought the groceries anyway. He would probably also want to pay Gram, but we hadn’t gotten that far in our earlier quick but succinct phone conversation.

“Yes, he will. Now, we can’t allow people to sleep on the floor. We’ll have to gather some cots. Call Teddy, get him on the job,” Gram instructed.

“That’s a good plan.” I pulled out my cell phone.

Teddy was my younger and much wilder brother. His reputation as Broken Rope’s Don Juan had mellowed slightly this summer, but finding him might still be difficult. He some- times answered his phone, he sometimes didn’t. His reasons for not answering were as simple as the phone was turned off to the too-often-used he was no longer in possession of it because some woman threw it out a window, or into a pool, or ran over it, or stomped it to death. Teddy’s ways as a lothario were embarrassing, but at least he never pretended to be something he wasn’t.

My call attempt was halted by a big gust of wind that blew through the kitchen’s open windows. It was so strong that it rattled the glass and knocked a couple pots off a shelf, the metallic crash as loud as a gun.

The wind brought a scent with it. The distinct smell of lavender filled the long room. I looked at Gram, who looked back at me with a tight mouth.

The last time I’d experienced a gust of wind and a distinct smell, I’d been visited by the ghost of Jerome Cowbender, one of Broken Rope’s long-dead historical figures. Jerome’s appearance had caused a number of problems, the biggest one being that I’d developed an unhealthy crush on him. He’d been gone for a month and a half and I still missed him, though I tried to hide it. Missing a ghost was not a good way to live life. I knew this. I hoped my emotions would catch up with my intellect soon.

That wasn’t going to happen today, though, because as the wind brought in the lavender, the first thing I said was, “Jerome?” And the first thing I did was run to the window and look out at the neighboring cemetery. I saw green, mostly trimmed grass, a few old trees, and a number of tombstones, some of them still upright, some of them not so upright, some of them carved with serious and sad words, and others with funny ones. However, there was no sign of the dead cowboy. Anywhere.

“Betts, dear, I told you that he probably won’t be back for some time. You need to get over him.” Gram stood behind me and put her hand on my shoulder.

I nodded. “I know.” I’d developed a habit of touching the very small scar on my neck that I’d received as the result of being grazed by a bullet when Jerome and I fought off a killer, someone who’d fooled us all and murdered Broken Rope’s historical theater owner, Everett Morningside. I touched it now with the fingers on one hand as I reached into my pocket with the other and twirled the coin that had come from Jerome’s long-ago buried treasure. If Gram knew I kept it with me and considered it a good luck charm of sorts, she’d probably just tell me again to get a grip and get over him.

“Besides, the only smell Jerome brings is wood smoke. This is flowery—lavender, I think,” Gram said. “I’m trying to remember who brings lavender.”

Since Jerome left, Gram had tried to explain the ghosts of Broken Rope. She told me they come and go, they couldn’t be controlled, they were mostly not dangerous, but some of them could cause “a whole bushel of trouble.” She also mentioned that I should never, ever get attached to any of them. They weren’t alive and never would be again. They come and they go, she’d repeated a few times. They didn’t have free will. They had no will. They were the remnants of dead people.

I understood this all, and yet I still wished for the time when Jerome might come back.

“I know, Gram, but something just happened, didn’t it?” I looked out the window again.

“Yes, someone’s here, but I can’t remember who. They’ll show themselves soon enough, I suppose. Shoot, there are so many.”

“You’ve mentioned that, but you haven’t told me how many yet.”

Gram had been torn about my introduction to the Broken Rope ghosts. She was glad to have someone to share her haunted experiences with. But she also thought the ghosts were sometimes a nuisance, and she didn’t want me to have to deal with any nuisances. I was just curious enough that I didn’t see the harm. Maybe someday, after I’d gotten to know a few more, I’d feel differently, but not now.

“Let’s not worry about that until we really have to,” Gram said. “Come along. Let’s check the cemetery and see what we’re up against.”

I didn’t follow her right away, but watched the doors swing closed behind her. I was curious, of course, but I wasn’t ready. I’d been telling myself that if I ever again had dealings with a ghost, I would do exactly as she had been telling me to do—not get attached. I would let them be what they were: stuff left over from life, stuff that’s dead, stuff that our unusual town of Bro- ken Rope somehow held on to. I knew it would be difficult, though. There was something inherently appealing about being able to communicate with a ghost.

Gram had been dealing with the ghosts all her life. She knew nothing different. If she thought it was amazing to be able to see and talk to them, she didn’t show it. She was pretty matter-of-fact about the whole thing.

It was still all new to me. I needed to be able to accept this gift or talent or perhaps even curse and make it work for me. I took a steadying breath, ignored my drying mouth, and followed her path through the kitchen and out the front doors of the school.

I had to put my hand up to shade my eyes from the bright sun, so I didn’t immediately see why Gram exclaimed, “Don’t worry, you won’t feel it!” as I joined her in front of the school.

It took me only a second, though, to see the ax being swung in my direction, at my head more specifically. I was too stunned to do much of anything, so it was a good thing I wouldn’t feel it. The ax landed right on my neck. And then went right through it.

“Betts, meet Sally Swarthmore. She’s harmless now—even her ax isn’t real any longer—but she was one wicked woman in her time.”

Sally Swarthmore was blond and top-heavy. She was also strikingly pretty, even in the bright sunlight that caused the ghosts to be a slightly faded version of what they were in the dark.

My heart had taken an express route to my throat, but now it began to sink back down to the right spot. I wondered if Ms. Swarthmore would have liked nothing more than for the ax to still be sharp and lethal.

“Sally,” I said cautiously. No matter what Gram said about the ghosts being harmless, I had learned something about them during Jerome’s visit that made me ponder just how harmful they could be if they really wanted to. I still hadn’t told Gram what I knew. I wasn’t sure I ever would. If, in fact, she didn’t know what could happen to the ghosts when they were surrounded by the dark, that lack of knowledge might be the very thing keeping her peace of mind intact. At the moment, I didn’t want to be the one to shake her sense of security.

“Who are you?” Sally asked roughly, though her face softened one tiny bit.

“Isabelle Winston. I’m Missouri’s granddaughter.”

“Miz, your granddaughter can see me?”

“Seems that way,” Gram said. “Maybe we could drop the theatrics, Sally. You’ve attempted to haunt people since you died. It hasn’t worked with me, and it isn’t going to work with Betts. You’re too silly to pull it off anyway.”

Sally put the ax to her side. “I’m silly? Well, that’s a fine bundle of sour oats.” She looked at Gram and then back at me. “I guess I’m glad there’s more than one of you. Maybe you’ll be more fun than your grandmother. This could be interesting. Tell me, Miz, where did we leave off?”

The ghosts arrived with spotty memories, having mostly forgotten their lives along with their previous visits. Jerome, and it seemed that Sally, too, remembered Gram, though. She must have been their touchstone. I supposed that was better than starting at absolute zero every time.

Gram thought a moment. “I seem to remember us discussing a diary, your diary. You said that you wished you knew where it was so you could prove that your homicides were justifiable.”

“Really?” Sally’s eyes opened wide. “My murders were justifiable?”

“That’s what you said last time.”

Sally shook her head. “I hope it comes back to me, but right now I don’t . . . oh, hang on, maybe . . . no. We’ll see. Until then, what should we do?” She smiled and swung the ax up to her shoulder.

Gram looked at me. “You’ll find that Sally likes to ‘do’ things. She’s a curious ghost and doesn’t always go away whenyou’d like her to.”

“Hey, I’m right here,” Sally said.

“Oh, I know,” Gram said. “We’ve got work to do, so you may come into the school and join us, but stay out of our way.”

Gram pushed past me and hurried back into the building.

“Nice to see you, too, Missouri,” Sally muttered.

“You want to come in?” I asked.

Sally shrugged and tried to look nonplussed. “I guess there’s nothing else to do.”

The inch-by-inch cleaning we’d originally planned trans-formed into just a good cleaning. I called Teddy, who answered his phone and said he’d be able to round up the cots and other bedding we’d need.

Sally, her ax seemingly permanently attached to her gripped hand, mostly complied with Gram’s order to stay out of the way as we hurried to get the school ready for the guests. She was a talker, though. She asked about everything—the appliances, the utensils, the mop, my hair, Gram’s bandana, the cars out front, everything.

“I don’t understand why people will be sleeping here,” she said after we’d given her a brief overview of how transportation had changed since she was alive.

“There’s no other place,” I told her. “The hotel is booked. I even checked on the high school gymnasium, but it’s busy with a volleyball tournament.”

My dad was the high school principal, and my mom was the auto shop teacher. They were currently on vacation some- where in Arizona, but the high school building was constantly being used for something; summer camps, sports tournaments, etc.

“We’re just going to have an all-night cooking class. Those who want to participate will learn everything there is to know about potatoes. Those who want to sleep will have cots in the reception area and the back classroom that we rarely use.” Gram paused and looked at Sally like she couldn’t believe she’d taken the time to explain the circumstances to the ghost.

“Hmmm,” Sally said.

“Sally, if you try to haunt our guests, you’ll only end up irritating Betts and me. We’re the only ones who can see and hear you. You might want to work on ‘demure’ this evening.”

Both Sally and I laughed. Gauging from the short time I’d known her, I doubted she’d ever been demure, and even though she couldn’t remember the details, she probably was pretty certain she hadn’t been either. It was that one shared laugh, that small connection, that made me think I was fated to become at least partially attached to these traveling ghosts forever. I couldn’t say that I liked Sally really. It wasn’t possible for me to so quickly befriend someone who’d axed her family to death, even if her actions might have been justified. But there was something more than just my ability to talk to ghosts that made them appealing to me. I wondered about the connection and hoped I might someday understand it. For now, I thought that maybe it was simply that I could see them because I was somehow predisposed to feel tied to them.

The rumble of a big engine sounded from the front of the school.

“Is that the bus?” Gram asked. “Betts, what time were they supposed to be here?”

“I thought not until this evening.”

Gram flung the bandana off her head, and we both removed our rubber gloves, throwing everything onto a shelf. Gram fluffed her short hair, and I pulled my ponytail a little tighter. We were not in any shape to have company, but the squeak and air release of brakes told us we didn’t have any more time to prepare.

“I guess we’d better go greet them,” I said.

We hurried out to the front of the school. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Sally followed close behind, but she didn’t speak, which made her voice as quiet as her footfalls. It seemed the only sounds the ghosts made were those that came out of their mouths.

The bus was big and black with tall purple lettering that said Have Food? The windows were dark enough that we could see figures inside but nothing specific about our visitors.

The door swung open.

It seemed to take forever for the person inside to climb down the stairs and off the bus. Finally, an extraordinarily well-groomed man smiled and then bounded toward us.

“Hi, are we at the right place?” he asked. “I’m the group’s guide and driver, and I don’t want to disrupt the riders if I didn’t get the right spot.” He stopped in front of us and smiled. It was difficult to tell how old he was, but I thought he was in his fifties. His hair was a darker black than the color of the bus and it shone like the finish, as though he waxed both the bus and his hair at the same time. His mustache was perfect, and his short-sleeved shirt and khaki pants didn’t have one wrinkle. I wondered how someone could drive a bus and not be wrinkled.

Gram extended her hand. “I’m Missouri Anna Winston, owner of this place. Call me Miz. This is my granddaughter, Isabelle, or Betts.” She pointed to the Gram’s Country Cooking School sign. “I believe you are most definitely supposed to be here for one night. You’re the food tour group, right?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He shook Gram’s hand. “Leroy Norton at your service. Well, I’m at their service really.” He nodded toward the bus. “Thanks for putting us up for the night. I’m a little baffled at where everyone’s going to sleep, though. I pictured a . . . well, something else.”

“We’ll have cots. Soon,” I said.

“Cots?” Leroy didn’t hide his displeasure. “I’m not sure . . .”

“Leroy—Robert’s leg is cramping. Can I get him off the bus?” A woman with a big, red beehive hairdo was leaning out of the bus’s open door.

“’Scuse me,” Leroy said as he turned and hurried back to the bus.

“I don’t think cots are what he had in mind,” I said. “Uh-oh,” Gram said as she glanced toward the bus door and put her hands on her hips.

“What?” I said as I followed her line of vision.

Leroy was off the bus again, but he was reaching into the open door. Slowly, more slowly than I could have thought possible, he stepped backward as he helped someone disembark.

The man exiting the bus was very old. His skinny figure was hunched over, and he walked with a cane in one hand while holding Leroy’s with the other hand.

“Betts, is this an older persons’ tour?” Gram asked quietly.

“No one mentioned their ages,” I said just as quietly.

Sally laughed. “I don’t have to try to haunt these people. They could join me at any minute.”

Neither Gram nor I laughed with her.

This book will make you hungry for more
By F. Yoder
If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance is the second in this delightful new series by Paige Shelton.

Betts and Grams are planning on getting started on the midsummer cleaning on their cooking school. But then the town's fake sheriff, millionaire and town historian, Jake, volunteers them to put up a bunch of tour bus foodies, their hotel rooms having been overbooked. Fortunately for everyone involved better accommodation are found nearby. But Betts and Gram soon agree to hold some cooking classes, in hopes that everyone will be happy. That evening Betts finds one of the tour members on the bus apparently looking for something. The next morning they learn that three of the tour members are missing and soon one is found dead in front of Jake's storefront office. Betts soon seeks out her former boyfriend, Cliff, who is a policeman, to get and give information to.

The current day mystery was well done and with interesting characters, but for me the best character is the "ghost" Sally Swathmore. Sally is blond and top heavy and carries an ax, reportedly the one she was using to kill her parents with. Gram and Betts are the only people that can see and communicate with the ghosts. Sally wants Betts and Gram to find out if she did in fact kill her parents. The reader doesn't need to believe in the existence of ghost to enjoy this series, just enjoy the stories the ghosts have to tell.

I really enjoy this series and am looking forward to the next book. Recipes for different potato dishes are included.

Foodies-Murder-An Ax-wielding Ghost
By Lynn T.
If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance is the second book in the country cooking mystery series. I enjoyed the first book in the series If Fried Chicken Could Fly so I was eager to read the second book. It did not disappoint. Betts and Grams run a cooking school in Broken Rope Missouri. A group of foodies need accommodations due to a mix up on a bus tour. Jake (Bett's best friend) contacts Betts to help find accommodations for the group. The group is eventually sent to new Bed and Breakfast where a barn is set up like a dormitory. The regular Bed and Breakfast rooms aren't ready yet. Soon three of the foodies disappear and one is found murdered.

There is a second mystery going along beside the foodie mystery. Betts can see and talk to the ghosts in Broken Rope. Sally Swarthmore who is carrying an ax appears to her along with a scent of lavender. I actually enjoyed the secondary ghost mystery more than the foodie mystery which I liked also. Broken Rope is rich in history of notorious characters and actions occurring in the past. Sally died in jail after being sentenced for killing her mother and father with an ax. Sally wants Bett's help in finding her diary to find out what really happened. Sally is a engaging and entertaining character. Betts and Jake are very likable characters. The location of Broken Rope with it's history and cemeteries is just filled with stories to tell. There was a scene in the Monroe House that was quite suspenseful. This series is quite enjoyable. Looking forward to the next book.

Will old loves be rekindled?

I'm a bit of a push-over for talking ghosts. Add in high school sweethearts, a wealthy best friend, and law enforcement that does not mutter "leave the investigation to the Profesionials"...........Just my kind of read.
