For twenty-nine-year-old Hannah O'Dowd, finding a decent man in Portland, Oregon, is like pulling teeth!
Luckily, the self-employed clothing designer has a job she loves and friends to help ease the pain: oversexed Cassie (always good to have the opposite perspective, Hannah notes), analytical Louise (too much perspective not always good) and an in-the-flesh tooth puller, dentist Scott (could prove useful). But as she nears the big 3-0, she begins to realize that dating frantically may truly be the only solution to finding Mr. Maybe.
So, pumped up on nothing but drive and determination, Hannah cuts loose on her romantic quest. In fact, she kisses so many frogs she fears she'll turn green. (Note: While paling in comparison to her paralyzing fear of anything dental related, acquiring froglike qualities from hanging around losers—still not good.)
And she's only just begun!

Amazon.com Review
Dentophobe Hannah O'Dowd is almost 30 and she's determined to find a husband. She and her cozy circle of single friends live in Portland, Oregon, a city of 2 million souls, roughly half of which are male. Hannah hatches a plan to find her one man in a million via free Internet dating services--and challenges her friends to do the same. Unfortunately, all of Hannah's dates are turning out worse than your average root canal.
Lisa Cach's Dating Without Novocaine is a witty, sexually frank look at what a smart self-employed woman might do to find the man of her dreams. Will she make the first move on Wade, the wildlife biologist who keeps asking her out but has yet to even hold her hand? Will she agree to a second date with Pete, the hunky cop with attention deficit disorder? Could she possibly be attracted to a wealthy computer engineer who paints his toenails gold? Hannah's sure the right guy is out there, it's just a matter of finding him.
Like Bridget Jones's Diary and television's Sex and the City, Cach's first contemporary romance presents a single girl who has great friends and a variety of unacceptable romantic prospects. Wiser than Bridget and warmer than Sex's Carrie, Hannah may find her man just in time. --Jennifer Lindsay
From Publishers Weekly
Talented seamstress Hannah O'Dowd cuffs men's pants to pay the rent, but while her hands hover at ankle-height, her attentions are focused a bit farther up. She's 29 and hasn't yet found her backyard barbecue guy: "I don't want to turn thirty and still not know who I'm going to marry," she gripes, setting the tone for this mild single-girl tale set in Portland, Ore. At least she has company in her loyal but flaky roommate, Cassie, who is taking belly-dancing classes to unblock her "sex chakra," and the more sensible Louise, a phone counselor at a crisis center. It's immediately obvious that Hannah is going to fall for their mutual friend Scott, a sweet and successful dentist who's allegedly off limits because he used to date Louise. Although there's never any doubt she'll end up with him, it's still satisfying when he gets her into the chair. In her first contemporary novel (after five romances), Cach is funniest in her descriptions of Hannah's dental phobia, and she adds a few touching scenes when Hannah's mother suffers a stroke. Unfortunately, the characters tend to toss around clich‚s rather than engage in meaningful dialogue. Even the young, single audience to which the novel is clearly pitched will find the heroine's dating fiascoes the gay guy trying to go straight, the cop with attention-deficit disorder old hat, but those in need of a dose of the tried and true may appreciate the familiarity. From Booklist
At 29, Hannah O'Dowd has a successful clothing design business and a group of supportive and caring friends: practical Louise, free-spirit Cassie, and handsome Scott, a dentist who torments Hannah with dental horror stories. But Hannah and her friends are all without significant others, and Hannah does her best to convince them to try Internet dating. Undeterred by her friends' reluctance, Hannah forges ahead into cyberspace and meets Wade, a cute wildlife biologist. Though he's sweet and attentive, Wade seems uninterested in having a sexual relationship with Hannah, and when she finds out why, their relationship ends. Pete, a gorgeous police officer who's four years Hannah's junior, appears to be a better option until it becomes apparent that he's really only interested in a physical relationship. Meanwhile, Hannah is confused by Scott's attentiveness to her: Could he possibly be interested in her? Hannah's refusal to see the obvious becomes irritating, but otherwise, this is an appealing tale of the trials and tribulations of the dating scene. Kristine Huntley

Better than a root canal
By Angela Z
"Dating Without Novocaine" was somewhat amusing, but it had potential to be so much more! I was interested in Hannah's plight from the start--she's quite witty and likeable, but despite all of her misadventures with creepy guys, it was a bit dull. Midway through the book, I didn't really care if she found Mr. Right.
Her sudden desperation to get married seemed a bit pathetic as well. This idea that she needed to be heading down the isle before she hits 30 just seemed a bit old-fashioned. Where did it come from? She just comes to this realization a few months before her birthday? It's a bit far-fetched that a self-employed, independent, pretty, 29-year-old would suddenly become so obsessed with coupling up with a man that she settles for passionless dates with dorks.
In the end, it flows quickly and I think it was written well--like so many other Red Dress Inc. books. This book is enjoyable and has some funny moments, but there are better out there!

lacking creativity
By A Customer
Granted, the market is currently oversaturated with books on single women and 20-30 somethings, but that is all the more reason to expect a twist to go with this catchy title.
I found this book disapointing at best. It did not provoke a reader's "high" with a creative or developing storyline. The ending was so predictable within the first 20 pages, that the rest of the book was on autopilot. If I hadn't paid for the book I wouldn't have finished it.

A satisfying, rewarding read for single ladies
By Sparkina
This book is wonderfully true to life. LOVE the descriptions of Hannah's pathetic potential partners, from the gay guy trying to go the hetero route, to the gorgeous policeman with attention deficit disorder, to the handsome and wealthy computer engineer who sports an earring and a frosted-gold pedicure and eats bread that looks like bird food. Every woman who's been on a blind date will identify with Hannah and Feel Her Pain. And I thought the ending was satisfying and empowering. Recommended reading for unpartnered ladies everywhere!
