Too many of today’s pastors and leaders mistakenly think that thriving programs, lively worship services, and relevant preaching are adequate for developing people into the spiritual dynamos God desires. In many churches, the primary objective of the church—personally discipling individuals into mature followers of Jesus—has been “outsourced” to large-scale programs. But are people truly being disciple and taught how to follow Jesus? Are they growing in spiritual depth and missional determination?
Twenty-five years ago, the leadership team of Perimeter, Randy Pope’s rapidly growing church realized that nothing but personal discipleship could account for the uniqueness of individuals and the call of God on each person’s life. Perimeter calls their approach “life-on-life missional discipleship,” and this book tells the story of how they learned to bring discipleship back from the margins of church life to the mainstream.
Many pastors and leaders are slowly awakening to the reality that current models of ministry just aren’t working the way they had hoped they would. Randy’s journey as a pastor will encourage you and invite you to consider the effectiveness and fruitfulness of your own church’s discipleship efforts.

How churches can make more effective disciples
By John Gibbs
Most churches use the pastoral model, the attractional model, or the influential model of ministry, all of which are good but are missing a key ingredient, according to Randy Pope in this book. Somehow we need to take the broad message of the gospel and the wide mission of the church, and deliver it person-by-person until our people are filled with it. Thus the author advocates a model of ministry he calls Life On Life Missional Discipleship (LOLMD).
There are five key emphases in the small groups which form the key part of the discipleship process, spelling the acronym TEAMS:
* Truth: Participants learning how to study the Bible on their own, and bring back questions or insights to the group
* Equipping: Giving participants a specific plan to follow, modelling how to do it, giving them assignments to apply what they have learned, and following up to see that it has been understood and become usable
* Accountability: Asking hard questions, challenging bad behaviour, and finding the sin beneath the sin, but all in an atmosphere of grace
* Mission: Taking up the mission of Jesus where participants live, work and play, and to the ends of the earth; mission being the disciples' exercise and the Word their food
* Supplication: Praying for each other and with each other
Interspersed between chapters explaining the theory of LOLMD, the author provides descriptions of group meetings to illustrate how a discipleship group might work. Interestingly, he advocates men-only and women-only groups, and he also recommends that a church begin in a small way with just one or two groups, rather than suddenly replacing an existing small group structure with new missional discipleship groups.
Many church leaders have come to realise that their churches need to be far more effective at building disciples, and this book is one of a number of good resources that have become available in the past year. The book is interesting, well-written, and filled with insights that will help churches become more effective.

Life-on-Life Discipleship Model
By Dr Conrade Yap
Do we really need another book on discipleship? Is there anything new to learn about making disciples? In our busy world, and the many complex ministry models, can we still have a discipleship model that is simple and clear, without being simplistic and impractical? There is one answer to all of these questions. Yes!
When Randy Pope describes the flaws of the Pastoral model, the Attractional, and the Influential models, I was pretty much sold. That leaves me gasping for more of the Life-on-Life model that Pope is advocating. The key emphasis is that every individual matters. Far too often, we have become distracted over programs, and our infatuation with numbers of people. By doing so, in desiring to be more relevant, churches are constantly inundated with greater and greater demands for more flashy and attractional programs that are not sustainable, they fail to equip and help members mature as a community of believers. At the same time, too much inward ministry toward meeting needs of people through chronic care can cause a ministry to implode into self-centered ministries. We are reminded that Jesus spends more than 90% of his time with his twelve disciples. There are no megachurches then. Jesus is focused on lives, one at a time. So should we. Every life counts. If our target is toward a mature community, we need to start working at helping individuals mature. If our target is to equip, we need to let the mission guide our strategies and resources to be used for the purpose of equipping people FOR the mission. It is not the ministry that determines the mission. It is the mission that determines the ministry, and it is a clear understanding of the target of the mission that determines the ministry models required.
This is no ordinary book on discipleship. Richly insightful and downright practical, leaders will be pleased to have in their hands a book that is marinated with profound ideas and generous in real-life stories, filled with examples of what it means to journey together one-on-one. I like the way Pope reviews the old paradigms and takes care not to throw them all away. Instead, he learns the best from them, adapts where necessary, and infuses some new insights to make it all fresh and exciting. Note that every Church is unique. Every Church is different in its resources, it contexts, and its strategies. This book will not only help Christian organizations to take a critical look at their existing programs, and start making bold initiatives, to breathe life into the old, and to let God build something new out of it all. Great book on discipleship!

So helpful, I bought a copy for my friend
By A Borrowed Flame
I found this book so helpful that I bought a copy and gave it to my friend to read.
Most churches have small / cell / home group bible studies, but "Are we excelling in making mature and equipped followers of Christ?" This is the question behind Randy Pope's book on discipleship.
Pope begins by evaluating the current and previous prevailing models (pastoral, influential, attractional & missional) and looks at their strengths and weaknesses, and suggests a new (old) paradigm of what he has called `Life on life missional discipleship (LOLMD)'. What Pope is not doing, is arguing for a particular programme, rather, calling the church back to the original calling of making disciples who will be mature and equipped to go and make disciples.
"Somehow, we must learn to take the broad message of the gospel and the wide mission of the church and deliver it person-by-person until our people filled with it."
Pope wants people to learn, rather than be taught, to be equipped, not just to know the truth. ("Equipping", he says "is massaging the truth until it becomes understandable and usable") He stresses that discipleship is not just informational and not just relational (a strength of small groups) but that it is action oriented as well, that it propels people to engage the community around them.
Throughout the book Pope gives us a fictional LOLMD group, to show how it might look (which I actually found quite moving at times), and the appendix has the outline of how the groups work at his church, though his stress is not for others to copy the programme, but to appropriate the principles.
I found that I was excited to keep reading the next chapter. It really encouraged me to think about this paradigm, and how it might impact the small groups I'm already a part of. I appreciated that it wasn't a mega-church pastor telling us how to copy him, but a pastor with a heart for discipleship sharing his ideas and encouraging others to take up the challenge. It's written in a `leadership book' style, but I think that Pope subtly subverts the genre in the process.
I recommend this book to anyone thinking about how to engage in discipleship and equip others for mature service.
