The Dark Room (Vintage International), by R. K. Narayan

R. K. Narayan (1906—2001) witnessed nearly a century of change in his native India and captured it in fiction of uncommon warmth and vibrancy. In The Dark Room, Narayan’s portrait of aggrieved domesticity, the docile and obedient Savitri, like many Malgudi women, is torn between submitting to her husband’s humiliations and trying to escape them. Written during British rule, this novel brings colonial India into intimate focus through the narrative gifts of this master of literary realism.

Do the wrong thing
By Vincent Poirier
Savitri keeps a good home for her husband and three children. With an eye on the family finances, she keeps a rein on the cook's natural extravagance. But she makes sure her son eats well, even though he is more concerned with cricket and with electric lights. She brushes her daughters' hair every day.

Ramani, her husband, bullies her with his complaints: every day the food is served too late or too early, the portion is too small or too large, the children are too noisy or too quiet.

Ramani never hits Savitri, he even occasionally has a kind word for her, but from time to time Savitri can't cope and seeks refuge in a room where she rests lying on the floor, facing a wall in the dark. When her daughters come for her, without moving she tells the cook to give them something to eat. She eventually comes out of her mood and returns to her life.

But now on many evenings, her husband comes home late from the office. Ramani has a mistress, and Savitri won't have it. She leaves him. She leaves with only the sari she is wearing, taking no food with her, no jewels. Nothing that belongs to that man.

She tries to drown herself. She tries to work while accepting no charity at all. She tries to repay her debts. Will she find the strength to do act? Or will she let opportunity pass her by?

More than in his other novels, Narayan deals here with right and wrong. Usually, his characters just get on with their lives; the world and their dreams might not have a meaning but that is only because there is something silly about expecting the world to have a tailor-made meaning.

Here, Narayan explores what happens when we do nothing, when we do *not* get on with the business of living our lives, when we do *not* actively care for what happens, or when we have the opportunity to return a kindness and fail to do so. Failing to act is wrong.

Vincent Poirier, Québec City

Dark Room
By A Customer
I was so overcome by this book. This is the first works I have read by Narayan and I was thoroughly pleased. What makes it so well written is the reality with which Narayan captures the culture of India and defines the roles that governed marriages in the 1930's. I must admit he is not too far off base in depicting marriage arrangements and the struggles of women in the 21st century. At times I was disappointed with its realism, the speech, the actions of the characters. It was all too familiar. A powerful and honest portrayal of how husbands and wives act in marriage.

A Dark Light Shined on a Marriage
By M. Frost
This is Narayan's third published work. Once again it is set in his famous fictional world of Malgudi. This work is the most "adult" of the three, discussing serious issues like relations between husband and wife & men and women, raising children, work, (ir)religion, and even petty crime. Everything has a dark cast and much of the activity happens at night. For example, the wife has had two miscarriages. This short novel, really almost a shortish novella, has two parts. The first focuses on a wealthy husband who hires a woman at his office and then who becomes infatuated with her, neglecting his wife of about 15 years to spend time with her. The second part focuses on the neglected wife who leaves home and winds up working in a temple to survive. Their three children are important motivators in each part. The title of the story refers to a part of their house where the wife, who battles serious depression at times, goes when she is depressed. So for her both the room and her mood are dark, as is the overall feel of the work. I found the later part of the first half a bit of a slog, almost giving up on the work. But I'm glad I didn't as I couldn't put the second part down. I had to know what happened to the wife. But with most of his works, Narayan really doesn't care whether the reader gets closure on the characters and their life issues. He chooses to end the book how and when he wants. So don't expect an all-encompassing wrap up that will give strong clues as to the definitive long-term outcome for these characters. The events are as they are and the interactions between husband and wife remain raw, especially for the times.

This work is not for anyone expecting Narayan to continue the lighter, more humorous looks at Indian life in the 1930s as show in his first two novels, Swami & Friends and The Bachelor of Arts. Narayan, born 1906, was 32 when this was published in 1938. He married in 1933 to a 15-year-old girl and his father had died in 1937. (The darkness in the book was mirrored in his life in 1939 when his wife died.) But as Graham Greene wrote, anyone who reads Narayan's works centered on Malgudi comes to have an understanding, in a way that only a series of novels can bring out, of how the "average" Indian lived and how their world evolved over the course of about 50 years from British-controlled colonialism to independence.

The Meaning of Superhero Comic Books, by Terrence R. Wandtke

"For decades, scholars have been making the connection between the
design of the superhero story and the mythology of the ancient folktale.
Moving beyond simple comparisons and common explanations, this volume
details how the workings of the superhero comics industry and the
conventions of the medium have developed a culture like that of
traditional epic storytelling. It chronicles the continuation of the
oral/traditional culture of the early 20th century superhero industry in
the endless variations on Superman and shows how Frederic Wertham's
anti-comic crusade in the mid-1950s helped make comics the most
countercultural new medium of the 20th century. By revealing how
contemporary superhero comics, like Geoff Johns' Green Lantern and
Warren Ellis's The Authority, connect traditional aesthetics and
postmodern theories, this work explains why the superhero comic book
flourishes in the "new traditional" shape of our acutely self-conscious
digital age."

Wanda is devastated until Alice Brooks suggests to Wanda that she go into business for herself. Wanda does just that. She opens up Wanda's Wonderful Pies.

Dana Turner and her daughter, Lizzie may have just found the perfect place to call home in Happiness Key. That could all change, when something from Dana's past comes back.

Emilie Richards has just gone on my list of authors I want more of along with Robin Carr. Instantly, I felt like I was in Happiness Key. I plan to go back and visit again as I enjoyed this book so much. I had so much fun visiting with all the women. Though, I have to admit that my favorite person was Wanda. She had a bunch of spunk and charisma. All the different yummy homemade pies she made. If Wanda's Wonderful Pies really existed, I would have gained about 30 pounds visiting it. Fortunate Harbor is the perfect summer, beach read! I look forward to more to come from Emilie Richards.

Sit down and have a piece of pie, why don'tcha?
By mzglorybe
The setting is the Florida Keys, this key specifically called Happiness Key, for which book 1 was titled. This is the second in a series centered around a few women neighbors who have become close friends in a familial way. With individual dramas of their own going on Ms. Richards weaves her novel around their specific situations and personalities and we feel we could just sit right down with them and have a piece of pie and coffee.

Wanda's Wonderful Pies was my favorite part of this story. Wanda is let go from a restaurant she has worked at for many years, feeling age-discrimination is the reason, which motivates her to open her own place. It sounds just like a place I'd like to visit and wish we had one in our home town.

Generally, I like all of Richards novels. This contemporary work did not rivet my attention as some of her other works have done (Sisters Choice, Whiskey Island and more) but I found it entertaining. It wasn't something that I just couldn't wait to get back to, and was a tad too-long, so therefore the 3-star rating. Recommended for light reading where you don't have to put too much effort or concentration on it, sometimes that is just what is called for, especially after intense reading.

Fortunate for Readers Emilie Richards Wrote this Super Book
By Bingo-Karen Haney
FORTUNATE HARBOR by Emilie Richards is the second book in the Happiness Key Trilogy and is filled with the interwoven lives, loves, losses, and friendships of five women who are the main characters in this series. The story is set on a twenty-five acre spit of land called Happiness Key on the Gulf Coast of Florida and so well researched and described by Richards that you will feel at home at once.

Emilie Richards centers FORTUNATE HARBOR around Tracy Deloche as she did in the first book, HAPPINESS KEY. Tracy owns the cottages that her friends live in. They are Wanda Gray, Alice Brooks and her granddaughter Olivia, and JanyaKapur. These residents welcome newcomer, Dana Turner, a single mother and her daughter Lizzie, and they help to calm her fears as they take her under their collective wings.

Tracy's has to deal with C. J., her husband who was recently released from prison. Theirs is a relationship with all the ups and downs of a roller coaster. C. J. can be charming, while also making everyone anxious as they wonder what he is really up to. He says everything he does is to help make up to Tracy for his past mistakes but is that true? Before C. J. returned, Tracy had been dating Marsh Egan and just as Tracy was planning their first quiet time together, C. J. had popped back into her life and of course, wanted her back, thus scrapping her plans for Marsh.

Dana, and daughter Lizzie, seem to have their own mysterious past that they were running from prior to settling in the one vacant cottage on Happiness Key. Things now seem perfect for the pair until something from Dana's past comes back that may cost her all that she treasures.

Janya Kapur very much wants to have a child, however, her husband, Rishi does not and so things are tense between them. After all poor Janya went through in HAPPINESS KEY with this relationship, will this be the last straw for her?

Meanwhile, there is the madcap Wanda who brings humor and good spirits to even the toughest of problems. She has worked at the Dancing Shrimp for a long time but now the owners are going to be turning the Dancing Shrimp into a fancy bar and letting go of some of their help. Unfortunately, one of those fired is Wanda. She is distraught until Alice gets involved. With Alice's help, Wanda realizes she can try opening her own business. Her pies are delicious and famous already and so she opens Wanda's Wonderful Pies.

Emilie Richards, Author of such books as A LIE FOR A LIE, SISTER'S CHOICE, and HAPPINESS KEY, gives readers stories rich with diverse characters as well as settings that often are as important as any character. And so it is no different when Emilie repeats this successful pattern in this latest novel, FORTUNATE HARBOR. One of the first authors who personally answered my plea for a review copy and interview was Emilie Richards. She has never let me down in any of her books and once again, Ms. Richards does not disappoint. With this second book of the Happiness Key Trilogy, Emilie's smooth writing style makes for a quick read as she once again has woven together the lives of her characters to give readers a rich story filled with intrigues, emotional confusion, financial despair, and even a possibility of new love. Thank you once again, Emilie!

Confessions of the Other Mother: Nonbiological Lesbian Moms Tell All!From Beacon Press

A 2006 Lambda Literary finalist in the LGBT anthology category

After author Harlyn Aizley gave birth to her daughter, she watched in unanticipated horror as her partner scooped up the baby and said, "I'm your new mommy!" While they both had worked to find the perfect sperm donor, Aizley had spent nine months carrying the baby and hours in labor, so how could her partner claim to be their child's mommy?

Many diapers later, Aizley began to appreciate the complexity of her partner's new role as the other mother. Together, they searched for stories about families like their own, in which a woman has chosen to forgo her own birth experience so that she might support her partner in hers. They found very few. Now, in Confessions of the Other Mother, Aizley has put together an exciting collection of personal stories by women like her partner who are creating new parenting roles, redefining motherhood, and reshaping our view of two-parent families. Contributors include Hillary Goodridge, who was one of the lead plaintiffs in the case for same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, stand-up comedian Judy Gold, and psychologist and author Suzanne M. Johnson.

This candid peek into a previously unexamined side of lesbian parenting is full of stories that are sometimes humorous, sometimes moving, but at all times celebratory. Each parenting tale sheds light on the many facets of motherhood, offering gay and straight readers alike a deeper understanding of what it means to love and parent in the twenty-first century.

From Publishers Weekly
More than 15 years into the lesbian baby boom, Aizley's collection of first-person accounts by nonbiological lesbian mothers is a long time coming. Nonlegalistic and (mostly) nonharrowing, these tales are only tangentially about powers of attorney, two-parent adoption, and custody battles, instead illumining what it is to be mom and not-mom at the same time. Some pieces explore the feelings of envy and loss of would-be but infertile mothers learning to accept their easily pregnant partners. Others examine the "lesbian daddy" role, as in Polly Pagenhart's exceptional "Confessions of a Lesbian Dad"; and the lesbian stepmom role, like CNN reporter Mary Cardaras's "Family of the Heart." The most moving essay, "And You Are?" by Hillary Goodridge, describes the peril of being the other mother who is a legal and familial cipher, unrecognizable as "real" family to either partner or child in the eyes of anyone but them. These essays explain what it is to be biologically estranged from your spouse and child(ren) and the daily struggle for approval and acceptance that these women face in society and sometimes even in their own homes and hearts. From Booklist
What of the "other" mother, the one who provides loving maternal care and some or all material support but hasn't gestated or given birth to the child? The contributors to this book of answers to that question don't shy away from "other" moms' jealousy for the "flesh-on-flesh, boundaryless nurturing" of the breastfeeding bond; the ambivalence of being 40-plus and hitherto "too busy healing my inner child to have my own kids"; or such wrenching experiences as a disharmonious split with a mentally ill partner who wouldn't allow visiting privileges, let alone partial custody ("even when it became clear my ex could no longer parent[,] . . . I didn't have a chance because I was a biological stranger in the eyes of the court"). Editor and biological mom Aizley's representative selection of the voices of those who, to the usual maternal trials and tribulations, add the difficult, revolutionary task of creating and defining unusual roles within and outside of their homes constitutes a valuable addition to the gay studies and women's issues shelves. Review
Review By: Jill Soloway, writer/co-executive producer of Six Feet Under - March 28, 2006 "Confessions of the Other Mother brings together hilarious, heart-wrenching, painfully honest tales of mommyhood. Not just for mothers or other mothers-- but for anyone who has felt like an outsider at the playground. Funny, warm, sad, beautiful-- and even sexy-- the book is not only from the heart, but for the heart." Review By: Christie Mellor, author of The Three-Martini Playdate - March 28, 2006 "The essays in Confessions of the Other Mother are alternately fascinating, insightful, hilarious, touching and goofy, and all a testament to what a universal thing it is to be a parent. I love the Babas and the Bobbies and the mommies and the mommas, they are all the sweetest and the strongest, as women and writers, and show us, in a very entertaining fashion, that we are all in the same boat." Review By: Rachel Pepper, author of The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians "Given how many lesbians are conceiving children together, this collection of narratives by non-biological mothers will fill a much-needed place in the queer parenting canon."

Amazing, and just what I needed as I have ...

Amazing, and just what I needed as I have tried to navigate this journey as the "other parent." It has allowed my wife and family to understand my struggles, fears, and concerns, and it has allowed me the chance to feel heard and understood. Thank you for writing a book that really touches on the reality of the mental and emotional challenges the "other mother" faces, I needed this more than I could ever express!

Life Changing!
By bookbird
This book gave me a framework to understand my world. As a lesbian stepmum facing isolation, discrimination and the difficult dynamic of being part of the family (and yet separate), this book brought stories of positivity and uniqueness to my life. I truly loved it and have recommended it to many of my friends. I spent the whole book saying to myself, "YES i know exactly what you mean... that has happened to us too!!"

It really lit a spark in my heart -- full of hopeful possibility and strength. This book reminded me that we are making our own worlds - one family at a time. :)

Very affirming! Don't hesitate - buy it!

Come il cielo d'aprile (Italian Edition), by Paolo Di Silvestre

Intense and An Excellent Read
By James Agee
First of all let me start off by saying that this book far exceeded my expectations! I was not expecting it to be so good and have me coming back for more. I literally could not stop thinking about this book when I stopped reading it. It is a very intense book and I would not recommend it if you are super squeamish because there are some pretty graphic scenes. The language used is intense, but when it comes to using the "f" word, the author simply puts something like "f---" instead of spelling it out, though it is quite frequently used like that.

The story is brilliant and you will feel like you know these characters personally. I rarely read a book that I simply cannot quit talking and thinking about, but this is one of them. It's action packed, every chapter is good and has a purpose, and it is a very satisfying read.

Great Story, Wish it was Marketed Differently
By Maggie
3.5 stars

I started out really liking this book but the more I read the less I liked it. It actually came to remind me of an adult book I read last year, The 500: A Novel, which I really, really hated.

If I had to write a description for this book I would never mention Flick's old flame. I think that aspect of the description is totally bogus. This is all in the beginning of the book so I don't think I'm spoiling anything, but Flick and the "old flame," Joi, are still together. In fact, when Flick enters the school the one thing he regrets about joining is that he'll lose Joi. And, throughout the majority Flick's time at school, which Joi isn't present for, Flick continues to miss her and fantasize about her. This book is one of those cases where they description teases something and then I find myself just waiting and waiting for that to happen and when it doesn't happen until three-quarters of the way through the book, I find that really frustrating.

Backtracking a little, the three-quarters of the book where I was just waiting were actually really good and I wish I could have experienced them for what they were rather than anticipating what was to come. I found the idea of the Mandel school fascinating and reading the course descriptions and hearing about Flick's classes was so interesting. I totally believe it's plausible.

There are a lot of supporting characters, something I don't normally like, and while I did have a little trouble keeping track of all of them I did like them and I thought they all served a purpose. My favorite supporting character was actually Gwendolyn, the highest ranking student at the school (before Flick arrives) and Flick's evil seductress. I'm pretty sure I was not supposed to like her, but I did! She was just so crazy, I loved it.

I won't spoil anything, but the end of the book got kind of crazy. Everything happened very quickly and it crossed over into the unbelievable to me. But the bottom line is that I liked the concept, I liked the characters, and I do feel comfortable recommending this, just don't go into it expecting a showdown between former lovers.

Majorly twisty look at psychopaths and nature vs. nurture
By Shae
Originally reviewed at http://www.shaelit.com/2014/02/review-how-to-lead-a-life-of-crime-by-kirsten-miller/

Ignore the cover copy for a moment. We’ll get back to it. What you need to know is that Flick hates his father. I mean, he HATES his father, and by the end you will, too. Flick’s dad is an amoral billionaire with a trickster’s mind and a boxer’s fist. After his brother’s death, Flick runs away from military school and ends up in New York, where he’s recruited by Daddy Dearest’s alma mater – the Mandel Academy. At first, Flick isn’t interested. He doesn’t want to be a CEO, politician, or banker. But the course catalog is like nothing he’s ever seen. Instead of history, languages, mathematics, and home ec, the students at Mandel are treated to courses on extortion, enforcement, wartime racketeering, slave rings, and cyber warfare. The current headmaster of the school wants to use Flick to prove a point and in return he’ll give Flick the proof to destroy his father.

This book could have gone so wrong. Any book that boasts a cast of murderers, drug dealers, prostitutes, and conmen must fight the temptation to wallow in graphic details. We could have been subjected to a long tale of lowlifes and scum, their petty wants and desires smashing against each other in a fight to come out on top. And, in a way, we are. Mandel Academy is an institution that promotes survival of the fittest. The strong prosper; the weak are destroyed. Compassion, mercy, pity, and benevolence have no place inside the academy walls unless they’re being used as a trick to get ahead. There are no friends in Mandel, no loyalties, no selfless sacrifices. There are only competitors fighting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel – graduation.

How To Lead a Life of Crime saves itself from plot predictability in several ways. First, there’s the voice. Flick is fantastic. He’s a smart kid, clever not only in book smarts but in his ability to read people and apply that knowledge to his current situation. Like some of my favorite tricksters, he presents himself as a twisted, selfish jerk but sticks closely to his own set of morals. He does not break under the will of another – be that person parent, professor, or peer – and he bends only enough to slip free. He guards his soft spots carefully, allowing us readers to see but no one else. Flick also carefully balances a unique blend of strength and frailty, fighting the powers in Mandel even as he battles hallucinations of his dead brother.

The second way Life of Crime saves itself is through characterization. I have unending love for our tricky Flick and his soft underbelly, but the other characters are just as fascinating. It’s a hackneyed ploy to compare a cutthroat story to The Hunger Games, but in this case I think it’s apt. Like THG, Life of Crime gives us a varied cast of characters. Some are innocents, but most are not. Some are villains because of their circumstances; others, because of their nature. We want our protagonist to win, to take it all, but we also secretly root for others to get through as well, or at least triumphant over the most evil of the other players. I also like that Ms. Miller fiddles with gender expectation through the characters. For instance, would you expect a meth dealer to be male or female? A prostitute, male or female? The most feared student at Mandel, male or female? Likely, you guessed wrong. Even the climax messed with my expectation in the most FANTASTIC way. [Read the original review to see the SPOILER.]

The third and (in my opinion) best way Life of Crime saves itself is through psychology. This book messed with my mind, and I LOVED it. Everything that happens exists on shifting layers of deception, motivation, and meaning. Everyone screws with everyone else. The students lie, steal, intimidate, and even murder their fellows in an attempt to get ahead. Pacts are made and broken, hierarchies are formed, ultimatums are handed down. The headmaster and professors do the same, pitting students against each other and alternating between frightening and rewarding their psychopaths in training to keep from betraying the school. Flick doesn’t trust anyone, so we as readers learn not to trust anyone either.

But Ms. Miller pulls out some major psychological twistiness on a level that I don’t think I’ve encountered in my fiction before. Every book has a character who Speaks The Truth. Most of the time, it’s the main character who gives us the appropriate beliefs and worldview to appropriate in the world we’re inhabiting. Sometimes it’s a wise old mentor who corrects the protagonist’s (and, by extension, our) foolish beliefs and headstrong ways. Sometimes it’s a love interest who opens the main character up to a whole new world. No matter who it is, this mouthpiece is usually set up and identified early on in the novel so that we as readers know who to trust. In this book, Ms. Miller gives us several voices to listen to. Some are clearly more trustworthy than others when it comes to morals, while others reign in the area of logistics and survival. As readers, we think we’re being discerning and wise as we choose our voices, but then Ms. Miller yanks it all away. I can’t give away how it all goes down, but it’s brilliant. Even the cover copy feeds into our expectations only to later subvert them epically.

I love every single aspect of this book. Literally, every single aspect. Even the ending, which I wasn’t so sure about when I finished, has grown on me, because I can trace back how it ties into the rest of the narrative. Ms. Miller opens up a thought-provoking discussion on nature vs. nurture, the difference between psychopaths and sociopaths and how each comes to be, and humanity’s propensity for good and evil. She also virtually guarantees that you’ll never look at any public figure the same way again.

Points Added For: The Peter Pan theme, Joi (who rocks my socks!), the psychological trickery, psychopaths and sociopaths, a coursework that I would genuinely enjoy (but only as an intellectual exercise, I promise).

Points Subtracted For: I’m not sure how I feel about the depiction of mental illness and would like a second opinion from someone more knowledgeable. I also didn’t like the straight-faced use of polygraphs, which are SO easy to fool.

Good For Fans Of: Psychopaths, psychological thrillers, crime and criminals, studies of human nature, I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

Notes For Parents: Language, suicide, attempted rape, drinking, all kinds of crimes and villainy (hello, school for psychopaths!)

From Publishers Weekly
It's been three months since East Berliner Trudy Hulst saw her husband, Rolf, a political activist who fled to the West just ahead of the Stasi in the early 1960s. So when the Stasi summons her for interrogation, she knows what's in store. With the help of Rolf's friend Wolfgang, now a state policeman, Trudy escapes to West Berlin, only to find out that her husband was shot and killed while he was going over the wall. Trudy finds a room in a dingy boarding house, works as a waitress and bides her time until her young son and his grandmother can join her. But when President Kennedy comes to town, Trudy's story so captivates a member of the presidential entourage that he takes her to America as a symbol of the Cold War's devastation. Meanwhile, Wolfgang's ties to the Hulsts put his career and his life in jeopardy. Though the portrayal of deprivation and suffering in East Berlin is by-the-numbers, Trudy's struggle to adapt to the free world is refreshing, particularly her experiences in 1960s America. (Mar.)

East Berlin, January 1963

The five o'clock whistle shrilled, and Trudy pulled the lever to shut down the ancient, clattering loom. She had stood on cold concrete since seven that morning, and her legs felt numb and swollen. A persistent ache nagged her lower back.

On the next machine over, her friend Renate was using up the last of her yarns before quitting. If you were close to finishing a job, you were expected to complete it before leaving. Renate was pushing fifty, twenty years older than Trudy, but she never complained about the long hours or her aches and pains. Trudy made a sympathetic face at her, but Renate just shrugged.

When her loom was quiet, Trudy anchored the pattern cards and locked down the machine. All around her in the cavernous, high-windowed building, other machines fell silent one by one. The echo of their rattling bottled up her ears. A parade of unsmiling women crossed the factory floor in rubber-soled silence, too tired to talk. Trudy joined the queue and clocked out, placed her time card in its proper slot in the rack and left the building.

Outdoors, a greasy yellow light hung above the factory roof. The low sky smelled like diesel exhaust and possible snow. Trudy rolled her head in a slow circle and felt the burning between her shoulder blades, the crackling in her neck. She buttoned her coat and started the long walk home through gathering darkness.

Twelve weeks today. Stefan's first birthday had come and gone, then Christmas and New Year's. Twelve weeks since Rolf had gone across, and still she'd heard nothing from him. Maybe Gisela had received some word from him today. She quickened her steps as if she hadn't fed herself the same hope every evening.

Lights winked on in the buildings along her route. The pungent aroma of bratwurst and sauerkraut drifted out from an apartment house, and her stomach rumbled. She was always starving by the time she got home. But she was luckier than most of the women on her shift, who still had to cook a meal for their families. Gisela would have dinner ready, and her mother-in-law was a good cook.Trudy pulled her coat tighter and pictured Stefan at home in the warm apartment with his grandmother, waiting for her return. That vision sustained her during the long days at the textile mill.

A few months ago, Rolf would have been there waiting, as well. For a while after the wall went up and cut him off from his job in the western sector of the city, he was at home more than he had been in years. She'd enjoyed those weeks, despite the financial hardship. But because he'd been a Grenzgaenger—a border crosser who lived in the East but worked in the West for better pay—he'd found it difficult to get a decent job in East Berlin. As the weeks dragged on, Rolf grew frustrated and bitter. Trudy had taken the factory job to get them by until he found something better. And Rolf had begun to spend hours away from home in other pursuits, dangerous ones that brought tension and arguments between them. And finally his exile.

It was fully dark by the time she climbed the stairs to their second-floor flat. Trudy insisted that Gisela keep the door locked when she and Stefan were alone. Trudy tapped three times before using her key. Behind the door Stefan shrieked, and she knew he was scrambling toward her on all fours, quick as a cat. He'd started walking before Christmas, but he could still crawl faster.

Smiling, she stepped inside and scooped him up, covering his face with sloppy kisses. He giggled and squirmed, his dark curls falling away from his face, and then lifted his shirt so she could tickle his tummy. Was it possible he had grown just since this morning? At this rate he'd soon be too heavy for Mutti to lift.

Gisela called to her from her favorite chair, where her knitting was spread on her lap. "Hallo, meine Liebe. A long day?"

Trudy carried Stefan and sank onto the sofa. "No longer than usual." She sighed. "Something smells wonderful. Goulash?"

"With boiled potatoes and green beans. It is ready when you are."

"In a few minutes."

Stefan slid off her lap and onto the floor, where he'd left a pile of lettered blocks. Trudy slouched back on the sofa and watched the rhythm of Gisela's knitting needles working blue-and-grey yarn. "What are you making?"

"A cap and mittens for Stefan. I found an old sweater of Heinz's in a drawer and unraveled the yarn. It's pretty, ja?"

"Yes, it is." Mutti was a master at making do with what she had, a skill left over from the war in which her husband Heinz had died.

Tonight Gisela's hands seemed tight on the needles, and Trudy noticed extra lines around her eyes. Either the arthritis had settled in her bad leg again, giving her pain, or something else was wrong. Trudy watched her a moment longer.

"Mutti? Did you hear something today?"

The needles kept working and her voice betrayed no emotion. "I had a call from Wolfgang."

Trudy frowned. "Wolfgang Krüger?" News from Rolf should come from one of his associates in the underground, not from the Volkspolizei.

"What other Wolfgang do we know?" Gisela looped a double strand of yarn over the needles and took three quick stitches. The cap was starting to take shape, thick and warm.

"What did he say?"

Gisela glanced up, and for a moment her fingers went still. "He wants to come visit us. He didn't say when."

Trudy's pulse jumped to her throat. This couldn't be good. She hadn't seen Wolfgang Krüger in months, maybe longer, and she doubted Rolf had either. "Why?"

Gisela shook her head and said nothing. She resumed her knitting.

Trudy saw in the set of Gisela's jaw that there was more to her conversation with Wolfgang Krüger than she was saying. Mutti was worried. She was also as stubborn as an old habit, and Trudy knew it was useless to question her further.

Gisela pushed the yarn back on the needles and folded her work into its faded canvas bag. "I'll set dinner on now. I'm sure you and Stefan are both hungry." She pushed herself up from the chair and started for the kitchen.

Now that Rolf was gone, they rarely ate at the big dining table that anchored one end of the living room. The table was one of only two Hulst family heirlooms to survive the war. The other was the rocking chair Trudy used every night at Stefan's bedtime. Tonight Gisela set out their meal on the small table in the kitchen.

There was little meat in the goulash, but Mutti was skillful with seasonings. Trudy held Stefan on her lap and let him eat small bites from her plate. She offered him a spoon but he preferred to use his fingers, and she was too tired to insist.

She ate all of her goulash and took another half portion, but Mutti picked at her food and had little to say. Trudy listened to the ticking of the kitchen clock and the rhythmic kicking of Stefan's foot against the table leg. She watched him track down green beans and gnash them happily with his three teeth.

When Stefan was full, he squirmed to get down. Trudy and Gisela cleared the table and stacked the dishes. While Trudy washed and Gisela dried, Stefan toddled around their legs, jabbering. His elbow was hooked around the neck of Bebe, the stuffed bear Rolf had given him not long before he left. The bear's brown fur was already matted, the red tongue partly gone.

By the time they'd finished, Stefan's eyelids were heavy and he was starting to fuss. Trudy wiped him down with a warm cloth, changed him into pajamas and let Gisela kiss him goodnight. Then she carried him to the bedroom they shared.

Inside a circle of yellow lamplight, the rocker creaked its familiar song while Trudy's feet pushed against the floor. All day in the cold clatter of the textile mill, she had looked forward to this quiet time. She hummed a Bavarian lullaby her mother had sung to her when she was small. Gisela had rocked Stefan's father in the old chair, and Trudy hoped those memories would somehow pass to Stefan. She wanted him to have the kind of family history that she had lost in the war.

Stefan was her miracle baby, her first and last. The solid weight of him grounded her, and she was thrilled by the bright intelligence in his eyes. Even now, the perfection of his tiny hands left her breathless.

She laid her head back on the chair and closed her eyes. Stefan's nose was stuffy and his breath rattled in his chest. Probably taking a cold.

A child's life ought to be safe and happy. But she couldn't even protect Stefan from catching cold or scraping his knee, let alone from the scary things that happened to children. Her own mother must have lain awake with the same worries, while Germany lunged toward war and Trudy's father was drafted into Hitler's army.

She had been six years old when her father went away, and now the same thing was happening to Stefan, even younger. The only image she had left of her father was a tall, straight man in a handsome uniform. His face had become a blur within a year after he was gone. How long would it take Stefan to forget Rolf? Perhaps he already had.

Humming her mother's lullaby, Trudy tried to remember her father's face. She'd been proud of him on the day he left, not even worried. Her father was invincible, and the grown-ups had talked about Hermann Goering's promise that not a single enemy bomb would fall on the capital of the Reich.

The British RAF proved Goering wrong. The first time the sirens blared in the night, her mother had pulled her from bed in her nightgown and they rushed to one of the bunkers near their home. Trudy had shivered in the damp cave, cradling the puppy her father had given her for her birthday. She clutched a blanket around them both, while her mother prayed and the night exploded.

That night the planes did little damage to Berlin. But that was only the first air raid, followed by many more. There were other dangers, too—looters in the bombed buildings and ruthless armed policemen in the streets. Worst of all, her friend Elsa Hammerstein disappeared along with her whole family, and no one would tell Trudy where they'd gone.

Her father had come home only once, on leave. He was nervous and thin, and there were special ribbons pinned to his che...

Preston scores a solid winner
By Patti Dickinson
Author Preston never ceases to entertain with vivid characters and eloquent prose. Trudy's Promise is a trip back into a period of history that could easily slip away and be forgotten. Instead, Preston puts you smack in the middle of East Berlin and all of a sudden you are experiencing history.I could feel the cold and the growing fear and then the desperate sense of loss at having to leave little Stefan. Trudy's Promise delivers a story of unparalleled courage and determination, and a love that time cannot diminish. The reader can't help but root for Trudy--she captures the heart. If the true measure of a "good book" is one that you hate to see end, then Trudy's Promise ranks at the top of the list. Preston has scored a solid winner with this story

Trudy's Promise well worth your time.
By Lesley A. Dvorak
Ms. Preston has delivered another great read. I believe that this is her best work to date. Her writing style is so eloquent and expressive, and her characters grab you from the beginning and never let you go. From the very first page to the nail biting ending, you will never lose interest in the wonderful story or the fates of the wonderful characters contained within. I see a movie in the future but one wonders if it can be half as good as this wonderful book. Well worth your purchase and your time.

Bringing History Alive for Students
By Ferryn Martin
I am always searching for ways to get my high school students to read. As a history teacher, I also try and find ways to bring history alive for my students. This book does both. Sometimes there are parts of great books that keep me from recommending them to my students. Even though this is a book written for adults, there is nothing inappropriate for teenagers. One such student told me recently that it is now her favorite book.
