From Booklist
As it turns out, Cynthia Banester didn’t need her pistol after all. John de Ward, Lord Kenton, is surprisingly happy to accept her marriage offer. The newly engaged couple couldn’t be happier—until they discover the truth about each other. Kenton thought he was marrying an heiress, but Cynthia’s family has recently suffered a severe reversal in their fortunes. Instead of marrying John de Ward, Cynthia finds herself engaged to Jack Briggs, an actor hired by John’s father, the Earl of Spayne, to play the part of his long-lost son. However, there is one thing that could keep them together, a common enemy—Henry de Ward. All Cynthia and Jack have to do is play the part of a loving married couple long enough to beat Henry at his game. But Cynthia isn’t sure she’s a good enough actor to pretend she adores the insufferable, annoying, and oh-so-sexy Jack. Merrill’s latest gracefully written romance has everything Regency historical readers could wish for, including a remarkably resourceful heroine, a deliciously sexy hero, a strong cast of colorful secondary characters, and a cleverly constructed plot buoyed by wit and passion. --John Charles

Charming hero, great characters & story!
By Miranda Owen
At the opening of the book, Miss Cynthia Banester and Lord Kenton go for a moonlit stroll in the garden. They each go for their own very different reasons. Cynthia is looking to help her family out financially by marrying a wealthy man. Jack Briggs, masquerading as Lord Kenton, is an actor hired by the Earl of Spayne to pretend to be his long lost son, marry money, and produce an heir. Not knowing Jack's plans, she pulls a pistol on him to get him to stay with her until someone comes to discover them and make them marry. This is no problem to Jack because in his mind, it fits in with his plans and he is extremely attracted to Cynthia. They have a brief courtship and then marry. It's not until directly after the wedding, when Jack speaks to Cynthia's father, that they finally learn the truth about each other. Cynthia's family is just about broke & Jack is actually an actor playing a part and not actually Lord Kenton. They both feel cheated and angry with each other. Jack decides to go visit his "father" the Earl of Spayne with his new bride and ask his advice. At this point the marriage is still not consummated. The Earl seems understandably disappointed but very gracious to Cynthia. He says that no matter what, he will look upon her as a daughter. The Earl's plan was originally for Jack to go off and have a fake tragic accident after making good. I enjoyed the relationship between the Earl and Jack. They end up having a kind of Father/son relationship. Jack helps the Earl with investment & estate matters. The Earl never planned on having any more children after his first one because he was a homosexual and couldn't work up enough enthusiasm to try again. After talking it over, they all come to the conclusion that the source of everyone's troubles seems to be Henry de Warde. He is the Earl's slimy younger brother, and the one who scammed Cynthia's father out of a huge chunk of change. They all decide to continue as if everything's fine and Jack really is Lord Kenton. They decide to go back to London and see if they can rattle de Warde and see if they shake something loose from him that they can use against him. It's during this time that they fall for each other a little bit. Jack seemed like a very charming, amiable guy through this - although I thought he was a little cruel toward the end the way he used Cynthia in the plan to ruin de Warde. Cynthia's mother was an interesting woman to read about, having been an actress when she met Cynthia's father. The ending is a surprise ending but I enjoyed it and was grateful for the info packed epilogue to wrap things up.

Amazon.com Review
In Cassie's Word Quilt, a young African American girl takes early readers on a remarkable tour of her 1930s-era Harlem home, school, and neighborhood. The tour serves as a vocabulary jaunt, as well. Dozens of objects are clearly labeled; the youngest viewers of this big lap book can point to familiar images as older readers read the captions: "doll," "quilt," "father," "subway," "jump rope." Ringgold's vibrant art captures the excitement of urban life in an era gone by. Gorgeous spreads feature a richly textured quilt motif, with illustrations picking up on the patterns in the squares of fabric bordering the pages. Seldom have we seen a word identification book as artful as Cassie's Word Quilt.

Ringgold's other titles include Caldecott Honor Book Tar Beach (on which Cassie's Word Quilt is based), and companion volumes Counting to Tar Beach and Cassie's Colorful Day. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Faith Ringgold returns to Tar Beach for Cassie's Word Quilt as the heroine takes readers on a tour of her home, neighborhood and school. Beginning with an upper and lower case alphabet on the endpapers, the volume introduces each theme in an illustration bordered by Ringgold's signature quilting, then specific vignettes follow on the opposite page. For instance, "Cassie's bedroom has many colorful clothes" appears above a grid of nine items (bed, dresser, doll, etc.) in a 3x3 formation.

From School Library Journal
Preschool-Grade 1--This is a wordbook, but much more. It is a lesson in the history and culture of New York City, 1939. Through Cassie, from Tar Beach (Crown, 1991), Ringgold presents a simple exploration of the child's life. In the well-patterned layout, readers see the roof of her apartment house, her bedroom, her block, her classroom, and her neighborhood. Two spreads introduce each area. One side of the first spread has a sentence such as, "Cassie's school is a good place to learn and have fun." The opposite side has a second explanatory sentence above a block of nine labeled pictures, laid out like a small quilt, that show things in the school, like "Classmates," "Teacher," and "Apple." The next spread takes those nine words and puts them into the classroom, so that students, the teacher, the apple, and the six other words reappear in that spread in action. The era and place come to life in Ringgold's boldly colored, heavily outlined paintings that show busy streets, Cassie's orderly multiracial classroom, the details of her neighborhood such as the grocer selling a quart of milk for six cents, a horse-drawn fruit stand, and a hand-pushed ice cart. Sentences and vocabulary are simple enough for beginning readers to handle on their own, but the book is also a wonderful vehicle for one-on-one sharing and classroom use.

Cassie's Word Quilt
By Don Gardner
"Cassie's Word Quilt" provides an introduction to the well-loved world created by Faith Ringgold in "Tar Beach". It uses the motif of quilts to break up the page into grids into which familiar objects are portrayed and labeled. It is as though we sat with Cassie on her quilt on Tar Beach and pointed out various objects in her world while she named them and told us how they fit in the mosaic that, when completed, describes the world of her home and neighborhood. "Cassie's Word Quilt" has more value as a companion to "Tar Beach" than a stand alone because it lacks a narrative thread. Faith Ringgold's powerful illustrative style effectively conveys the sights, sounds, and flavor of Cassie's Tar Beach neighborhood.

Colorful and educational
By Michael J. Mazza
"Cassie's Word Quilt," by Faith Ringgold, uses words and pictures to take us into the world of Cassie, an urban African-American girl who "dreams she can fly among the stars." We visit Tar Beach (the rooftop sundeck), Cassie's apartment, the neighborhood park, and her multiethnic classroom. Along the way, many items are pictured and labeled: dog, radio, lamp, teacup, sofa, flowers, etc. "Cassie's Word Quilt" thus has educational value for newer readers. Ringgold's artwork is colorful and fun.

Good picture book for 1-2 year olds.
By Sophie Latoux
My 22 month old daughter loves this book! She is very into the books that show one picture, one word and has always enjoyed pointing at things so she could name them. This book features alternating pictures of objects and then those objects in a setting. The setting in this book is the same as Tar Beach by the same author, and the picture's show a beautiful girl in her apartment, in her school, in her room, etc. I was so happy I found this book and Tar Beach as well as others by the same author. The artwork is expressive and creative and kids really relate to the pictures and stories. A great addition to the home library or classroom.

Foxfire, by Anya Seton

Anya Seton’s Foxfire makes the desert Southwest of the Great Depression come alive in all its rich strangeness and passion-filled glory.

Amanda Lawrence, a charming, sheltered New York socialite, falls in love with Jonathan Dartland, a part-Apache mining engineer who belongs to the vastness of the Arizona desert. Amanda responds to his strength and self-reliance, but has nothing and nobody to guide her when she follows him to the grim town of Lodestone.

“Not many authors succeed so well as Mrs. Seton in combining adventure and romance in a modern setting. Above all it is the driving and relentless pursuit of a treasure which keeps the people and the episodes at pitch throughout.” — Library Journal

Seton's tale of of love, a lost city in the sky and a legend of a wall of gold
By Misfit
Foxfire is set in early 1930's depression era as slightly spoiled Amanda Lawrence meets the dark and brooding Jonathan Dartland (Dart) while returning on cruise from Europe. Despite Dart's poor prospects as a mining engineer, sparks fly and they are married and return to Lodestar, a mining operation in the remote back country of Arizona. Unused to the rougher aspects of life, Amanda has a difficult time settling in to her new life as well as mixing in with the mining community peopled with unusual characters -- from the alcoholic doctor Hugh hiding from his troubled past, the very mysterious Mrs. Cunningham, widow of the original 1880's boom town mine owner, who never leaves her huge mansion on the hill in the adjacent ghost town and more.

When Dart's half Apache mother dies, Amanda finds papers detailing a legend about two priests who discovered an ancient Anasazi cliff dwelling in the high country of Arizona with a glittering wall of gold in the cave behind it. Tensions between Amanda and Dart continue to grow as a miner whose scheme to murder Dart and take his job goes awry but ultimately disgraces Dart. With no career to look forward to, Hugh and Amanda convince Dart to lead them through treacherous back country to the lost city in search of the wall of gold - but Amanda and Dart eventually find a treasure in the valley much richer than gold.

Some readers might find the first half of this novel to be a bit slow paced as Seton sets up her storyline and details in the day to day life of a mining operation, but I enjoyed it very much. I have traveled quite a bit in the desert southwest and have always enjoyed taking the occasional mine tour or two and soaking in the history of those aging ghost towns. I very much enjoyed how Seton set up her scenes, especially the sights and sounds of the Sonoran Desert and the high country approaching the Mogollon (mug-e-yon) Rim. She must have spent a fair amount of time traveling through the region doing her research, I didn't catch a single gaffe in either her descriptions of the local towns, the geography of the region and the flora and fauna. I thought I was going to catch her if she kept describing the saguaros once her characters got into the higher elevations, but she was spot on. As stated previously, I enjoyed this book very much, but probably only for die hard Seton fans (and I am one) or for those interested in mining history and legends of lost gold. I see this book is due out in September '08 in a brand new edition and a beautiful new cover. Four stars.

Not What I Expected
By Peggy Rizzo
Seton's story of life in a mining town is more than descriptive. It is an essay in human failings and awakenings. She poses contrasting elements between wealthy and poor, east and west, selfish and kind folks in a way that anyone can understand the difficulties the main character experiences in adjusting to a life quite different than what was previously known to her. I would have made many of the same choices, said many of the same things, and reacted in the same ways as she does in a hot dry mining town. While the story is a story, it is believable too.

I picked up this book with eyes for the golden southwest and found a treasure trove of characters that remind me of the cruelties of exclusion, presumption, and malice. At times the reader will hate all the characters in the book and, at other times will want to embrace them. Most of all they show us the complexities of relationship, of trusting and opening up to others and being oneself in the face of social opposition. People are cruel to each other - usually in response to some hurting of their own. The men are horrible and so are many of the women in this book. But the end shows that kindness stems from small efforts made and goodness prevails when one doesn't hold on to it so tightly. I am glad I read this book as I received a lot more from it than just entertainment.

Southwestern background a departure for Anya Seton
By Ruth A. Caldwell
however, as usual, I was suspended in time (early 1900's) and read this book in a matter of hours ! ! A young society miss has never found the fellows her age of much interest, in her NY city society circle. Then she meets and falls in love with a young man with 1/4 Apache heritage. Her life takes an abrupt turn when all the comforts of life are gone and she finds herself on a crazy wild-goose chase in the deserts of Arizona ! It's a shame Anya Seton's books are so hard to come by... she's a master author!

Bend, Not Break: A Life in Two Worlds, by Ping Fu, Mei Mei Fox

“Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking, capable of adapting to any circumstance. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back even from the most difficult times. . . . Your ability to thrive depends, in the end, on your attitude to your life circumstances. Take everything in stride with grace, putting forth energy when it is needed, yet always staying calm inwardly.”

—Ping Fu’s “Shanghai Papa”

Ping Fu knows what it’s like to be a child soldier, a factory worker, and a political prisoner. To be beaten and raped for the crime of being born into a well-educated family. To be deported with barely enough money for a plane ticket to a bewildering new land. To start all over, without family or friends, as a maid, waitress, and student.

Ping Fu also knows what it’s like to be a pioneering software programmer, an innovator, a CEO, and Inc. magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year. To be a friend and mentor to some of the best-known names in technology. To build some of the coolest new products in the world. To give speeches that inspire huge crowds. To meet and advise the president of the United States.

It sounds too unbelievable for fiction, but this is the true story of a life in two worlds.

Born on the eve of China’s Cultural Revolution, Ping was separated from her family at the age of eight. She grew up fighting hunger and humiliation and shielding her younger sister from the teenagers in Mao’s Red Guard. At twenty-five, she found her way to the United States; her only resources were $80 in traveler’s checks and three phrases of English: thank you, hello, and help.

Yet Ping persevered, and the hard-won lessons of her childhood guided her to success in her new homeland. Aided by her well-honed survival instincts, a few good friends, and the kindness of strangers, she grew into someone she never thought she’d be—a strong, independent, entrepreneurial leader. A love of problem solving led her to computer science, and Ping became part of the team that created NCSA Mosaic, which became Netscape, the Web browser that forever changed how we access information. She then started a company, Geomagic, that has literally reshaped the world, from personalizing prosthetic limbs to repairing NASA spaceships.

Bend, Not Break depicts a journey from imprisonment to freedom, and from the dogmatic anticapitalism of Mao’s China to the high-stakes, take-no-prisoners world of technology start-ups in the United States. It is a tribute to one woman’s courage in the face of cruelty and a valuable lesson on the enduring power of resilience.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* China’s Cultural Revolution—when teachers were considered enemies of the state—brought about the displacement of thousands of children of merchants, bankers, college professors, and others. In 1966, Ping Fu was seized from wealthy relatives at age eight and suffered savage treatment and deprivation for years. As this fragile young girl comes of age in a communist work camp, a great mind emerges. Later, while attending college, she interviews mothers about the killing of thousands of female babies and creates what is considered subversive literature. For this she is eventually deported from her native land. Fu arrives in America with only a few dollars and a strong will to survive. These experiences cause her to reckon with both the cruelty and kindness of strangers and to foster amazing resilience. Fu’s later adult life reads like a fascinating Forrest Gump–style adventure as she encounters giants in the world of computer and Internet technology. As founder and CEO of Geomagic, “a 3-D digital reality solution company,” Fu speaks to the need for humanity to practice love in business relations in order to avoid inflicting pain on future generations. This well-written tale of courage, compassion, and undaunted curiosity reveals the life of a genuine hero who remains committed to making the world a better place. --Susan DeGrane

Absolutely a liar
By Henry
==HK Time 19:55 17th Feb 2013== *revised regarding Guardian post 09:37 18th Feb 2013*

Seem things go dirty now, I am really surprise that Amazon deleted lin's review, which is the most detail, reasoning and sound. For those who are new comer, please go to page 5 in this comment and you will find lin's repost there.

One example of good reporting on this controversy is from The Guardian published on Feb. 13, 2013, "Ping Fu's childhood tales of China's cultural revolution spark controversy".

Those US media really disappointed me during this event, in fact, my faith on them is deteriorating. No matter what, Fu must paid for what she did, or otherwise it is making Fu as an example to follow. We already see the result of "rewarding the bad and punishing the good" in China, and things start getting bad in HK, just hope the US and American can make the right move

==original post===
It is very clear that her story is full of lies, only those cant read chinese and not familiar with modern chinese history will believe the story.

Some even can expose by simple calculation with a little bit background knowledge:

1. Fu born at 1958, and the Cultural Revolution happened during 1966-1976, and there was no way for a kid with her younger sisters/brothers would be sent to correctional labor camp.

2. Fu claim that she go to Soochow University at 1977. The National College Entrance Examination opened again after the Revolution at 1977, and during that time, "political censor" is a must, if she was in the labor camp, there is no way for her to pass the censor. Morevoer SooChow University established at 1982, how could she study there at 1977?

And Dr Fang is now condemning Fu about her lies, if you dont know whos he is, this is for your reference:

My response to Ping Fu's "clarification"
By Fang Zhouzi
(Note: I originally wrote this response in Chinese. It's translated by an associate profesor of University of Florida with a few modifications of mine)

Ping Fu posted a clarification article on her blog today in response to my criticism. Her article can be found at
[...]

Ping Fu claimed that although my comments are correct, they are made based on the inaccurate Forbes report, not based on her new book. The Forbes report has since been corrected.

In fact, if you read my article, you will know that the Forbes report triggered my criticism, but I made my comments not just based on this report, but also based on a series of reporting, radio and TV shows, and video interviews on American news media since 2005. I also read the two chapters of her book that are available on Google Book. All of them provide a consistent picture. If the Forbes report made mistakes, then the reports by other US media and what Fu said by herself on the interviews will also be wrong. It is useless to single out Forbes (as an scapegoat).

In her clarification, Ping Fu said, "I did not say or write that I was in a labor camp; I stated that I lived for 10 years in a university dormitory on the NUAA campus. Chinese children don't get put in labor camps. I also did not say I was a factory worker. I said Mao wanted us to study and learn from farmers, soldiers and workers."

Just ten days ago, in a video interview with Google, Ping Fu said that she lived in a ghetto for 10 years of Culture Revolution.

See [...] at about 7:15, i.e., 7 min 15 sec.

In a different interview with NPR, she said that she was sent to a correctional farm when she was 10 and stayed there for about 10 years. She vividly described a story of how she brought food from the correctional farm back to feed her sister.

See [...] at 15:50.

How could she blame the US reporters for mistaking what she actually meant?

In her earlier interviews with US news media, she always claimed that she had been forced to work in a factory since nine years old, without education (schooling) for the entire Culture Revolution. Now her factory experience becomes "Mao wanted us to study and learn from farmers, soldiers and workers." That's what every Chinese student experienced in that era. Not forced labor, it is just a part of the normal school curriculum at the time. How come it becomes her personal tragedy? In her logic, should every Chinese student from Culture Revolution claim that they worked for 10 years in factory without being educated?

But Ping Fu now also said that since the schools reopened in 1972, she studied tirelessly. In fact, schools reopened in 1968 during Culture Revolution. Let's just accept that Nanjing schools were special and they somehow reopened in 1972. But why would all previous US reports say that she was not schooled for 10 years? Here are a few examples:

Inc. Magazine's report at [...]

WeNews report at [...]

NPR even said that she never set foot in a classroom for those 10 years. See [...]
Illinois Alumni said she was locked up for 10 years and released when she was 18. See [...]

Why did all these US media make false reports? Why would they all believe she was different from other Chinese students of that time, not receiving any normal education while others did?

Regarding the extraordinary story about her witness of a teacher being torn into pieces by four horses, Ping Fu clarified, "To this day, in my mind, I think I saw it. That is my emotional memory of it. After reading Fang's post, I think in this particular case that his analysis is more rational and accurate than my memory. Those first weeks after having been separated from both my birth parents and my adoptive parents were so traumatic, and I was only eight years old. There is a famous phrase in China for this killing; I had many nightmares about it"

She acknowledged that she might have treated nightmare as reality. The famous Chinese phrase was killing by five horses, not by four. Killing by four horses was a western way of execution in ancient history. If she had a nightmare when she was a Chinese kid, she would have dreamed about five horses, not four. A possibility is that she fabricated this story to meet western mindset.

Ping Fu acknowledged that her undergrad thesis on female infanticide was never published, nor was it reported by People's Daily (#1 newspaper in China). But she said she read an editorial on gender equality on People's Daily in 1982.

However, she also claimed in earlier US interviews that her thesis made big public impact, with Wen Hui Bao and People's Daily reporting her findings, though her name was not referenced. Listen to what she said on NPR at [...] at 18:00

If her thesis was never published, how would newspapers know her findings? All right, granted that those newspapers had secret channels to learn her findings. How come the People's Daily report was about gender equality? It was commonplace for Chinese newspapers to promote gender equality in those years. What makes her to connect that editorial with her thesis on female infanticide?

Ping Fu claimed that she heard UN sanctioned China (due to her findings) while awaiting her passport. This is a significant but ridiculous event (UN sanction needs the blessing from China and other four permanent council members). She heard it from someone, and then made this claim (as a fact) everywhere in US media!?

In response to questions about UN sanction, Ping Fu mentioned a Stanford student, Steven W. Mosher, who wrote about Chinese female infanticide in 1981 and published his book in 1984; "the same year I was waiting for my passport," Fu claimed. Then she continued with, "According to the Los Angeles Times, Mosher successfully lobbied George W. Bush to cut UN funding for China. His story and the timeline are consistent with my experience."

Ping Fu arrived at US in January 1984. In order to draw connection with Mosher, she changed gear by stating that she was waiting for her passport in that year. As for Bush's cut of UN funding, that's Bush sanctioning UN (due to China's birth policy), not UN sanctioning China. Moreover, Bush became the president in 2001. That's 17 years after Fu moved to US. What will all these have anything to do with her story of being forced to leave China?

Ping Fu claimed in her clarification that the government told her to leave, not giving a specific destination. (She said she waited her passport for a year.) She got a student visa, which was secured through a family friend at the University of New Mexico.

However, in earlier interviews, she had repeatedly claimed that the government told her to leave China in two weeks. She even repeated this statement to the Forbes reporter the day before yesterday. Listen to what she said 10 days ago in the Google interview: Her thesis caught national and international attention, UN sanctioned China, she was jailed for three days, Deng Xiaoping (China's paramount leader after Mao) intervened, she was released and given a passport two weeks later, and told to leave China. ([...]10:30)

She got her passport in two weeks after her three-day arrest! Yes, she said that, facing the camera, just 10 days ago. Now she changed her words, stating that it was very difficult to get the passport and she got hers more than one year after her release. Is she lying?

Fu said in interviews that she knew only three English words when arriving at US although the specific words varied in different interviews. She now says, "English language classes were offered, but not required. I did not study English ever. I had `level zero' English, just like most Americans know a few words of Spanish or French. I tried to learn more English when I knew I was going to the U.S., but when I arrived, I only remembered a few."

A few, not three anymore? But what she says now is still a lie. First, since 1978, English is a required course in college. Second, her classmate (Zhi Lao Zhai, blog name, acknowledged by Fu as her classmate) stated in his blog that, "the 1978 students in the Chinese literature department were placed in two English classes. Fu's English is good among us. She was in the fast-track class."Third, Fu acknowledged that she passed the entrance exams to become a graduate student in Nanjing University. Graduate entrance exams had English.

In her clarification, she claimed that, "One of my classmates also responded to Fang's article on his blog. What he says is consistent with what I wrote in the book, so he must be a classmate."

That's another lie. She can fool American readers who do not know Chinese (the classmate's bog is in Chinese). In fact, her classmate's blog was entirely dedicated to reveal her lies. The blog is at [...]
Fu claimed that she didn't apply for political asylum. (It was a common routine to apply for green card through political asylum with claims of mistreatment by Chinese government on its one-child policy in late 80s. )

However, in February last year, when Singtao Daily reported on the first immigrant entrepreneur forum sponsored by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, it clearly stated that Fu received her green card through political asylum: "The four immigrant entrepreneurs on the speakers' stage all have their stories. Geomagic's Ping Fu was born in the mainland of China, grew up during Culture Revolution, received residence status through political asylum after coming to US in 1983, and then created her own business." See [...]

If Fu didn't get her green card through political asylum, how did she get it in 1987 when she was an undergrad international student? Other means for green card could not been applied to her.

Ping Fu said, "Criticism is not a form of defamation; it is a form of speaking or seeking truth. I welcome constructive criticism."

But she has been lying, for many years. Now, as she finds that she can no longer hold up the old lies, she creates new ones to cover the old. How can that be constructive? Revealing a liar's lies, exposing a cheater's cheats, that is not defaming. That is merely pointing out the truth.

so fake
By andrew
Her story about her experiences in China is so fake. Anyone who has some knowledge about the history during that period can easily tell that it's a totally fake story. She wouldn't be able to get into a university in China at that time if she didn't have a politically "good" background. Going to America was a dream of every Chinese back then. Everyone would conduct such a crime if the penalty was to be deported to America.

It's also funny that the second picture in this webpage [...] shows that she herself was a member of Mao's Red Guard. She must have had a good time during China's Cultural Revolution and the got into a university due to her "good" performance within the Red Guard.

A Must for Teens, Professionals and Parents
By audrey
I am a clinician working with adolescents. I have "Where Should I Sit at Lunch" prominently displayed in my offices (and my own home). Numerous patients have picked up the book and asked to borrow it. They have come back saying the book was very helpful and made them feel more comfortable about their worries. As one 14 year old said.. "it's so nice to see that other people feel the same way".

A 16 year old boy said "it's better than my therapy, the book gave me good suggestions on how to handle feeling shy and left out. And you don't have to bother reading stuff you don't want to, just go to the part that interests you." I feel that the Author's are empathic, practical and have put together a book that is readable and believable. THey clearly know teenagers and their struggles. The book is especially user friendly to pre-teens and teens. It is definitely a book that every parent should buy and leave lying around the house. It is truly a '24/7 guide to Surviving the High School Years".

This is what high school really is like!
By Y. Zhang
I thought this book was right on. It definitely helps. High school is such a hard time now, and most parents don't understand that. They always say that they understand because they were there, but honestly their experience is different because each individual's experience is different. All the topics in the book are exactly what high school teens are thinking about. Sorry parents, but it is the truth and it's good to have a guide that actually hits the true points of high school and not the ideal points. There is so much peer pressure that sometimes we make the wrong decisions, but with something like this guide to fall back on then there is not as much to worry about. Also, most guides are geared towards girls, but they are not the only ones with problems. So having parts about the troubles that guys have makes it that much better.

Great Advice for Worried Teens
By Brian L. Heaps
I bought this book for my 14 year old son so that he could begin to understand some of the things that go on in high school so that he could read about real experiences instead of my outdated memories. This book gives insight into everything he could need help with like school, friends, body image, relationships, dealing with family, and more. In particular the first hand quotes from actual high school students showed him that there are a range of things that he could encounter in the next four years, and it would be perfectly normal. He has taken away a new comprehension of what goes on in grades 9-12 besides classes which has made him much more comfortable with the transition that will take place at the beginning of this school year.
