In her historic mysteries The Rhetoric of Death and The Eloquence of Blood, Judith Rock created an atmosphere that "takes you back to fascinating and dangerous seventeenth-century Paris so well that I suspect her of being a time-traveler who's been there" (Ariana Franklin, national bestselling author of A Murderous Procession). Now, the latest novel to feature Charles du Luc finds the ex-soldier-turned-Jesuit caught up in royal intrigue...
Versailles, 1687
Madame de Maintenon is King Louis XIV’s second wife. The daughter of a minor noble of ill-repute, she has not forgiven the king's Jesuit confessor for encouraging him to withhold the title of Queen from her. To placate her, the prestigious Louis le Grand Jesuit school has sent a delegation—including her distant cousin Pere Jouvancy and rhetoric teacher Charles du Luc—to Versailles with a gift of reliquary.
But while the Sun King’s palace might be spectacular, this visit is anything but pleasant. Their first night, a courtier dies, and court whispers claim poison. Then the Jesuit delegation falls direly ill, and a palace gardener is found murdered. Fear grips a court already on edge. In the midst of all this, Charles learns that one of his students is in love with the king’s rebellious (and betrothed) daughter, and may ruin not only himself, but all of them …

Review
Praise for the Charles du Luc novels
“Thrilling…Engaging.”—Sarasota Magazine “[Judith] Rock takes you back to fascinating and dangerous seventeenth-century Paris so well that I suspect her of being a time-traveler who’s been there.”—Ariana Franklin, national bestselling author of A Murderous Procession
“Rock’s second novel featuring Charles du Luc is every bit the equal of her impressive historical thriller debut, The Rhetoric of Death…Readers will hope this energetic and engrossing sequel will be the first of many.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Rock’s historical accuracy resonates here, transporting you to 1686 Paris. Her intriguing plot and protagonists with whom readers are becoming good friends make this a necessary read for all who enjoy historical mysteries, especially those by Ariana Franklin.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Rock skillfully builds her suspense plot, all the while incorporating splendid detail of seventeenth-century Parisian monastic and street life and the relationship between church and Crown, along with the intricate political and religious conflicts of the era. She proves herself a promising new talent by creating this powerful, absorbing, complex, and thoroughly satisfying novel.”—Historical Novels Review (editor’s choice)
About the Author
For many years a modern dancer and choreographer, Judith Rock founded Body and Soul Dance Company in Berkeley, California, toured extensively as a solo concert dancer, and studied baroque dance. Research for her Ph.D. in art and theology took her to Paris, where she lived at the nearby Jesuit Cultural Center and researched the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century ballets produced at the Paris Jesuit College of Louis le Grand.
In a startling leap, Rock then spent several years as a police officer before taking that experience back to the stage as a playwright and actress. She was an auxiliary officer in the NYPD, and later a part-time police officer in Minnesota, working midnight shifts.
Rock has written on dance, art, and theology for many journals, and has been artist-in-residence and taught and lectured at colleges, seminaries and conferences across the United States and abroad. The Rhetoric of Death, her first novel, was a 2011 Barry Award nominee.

Fantastic Historical Detail in a Wonderful Character-Driven Mystery!
By Happy Reader
Maître Charles du Luc is a Jesuit Scholastic, one training to be ordained as a priest. It's June 1687 Paris, and The Sun King, Louis XIV, has been on the throne for 44 years (with another 28 to go). His is an astoundingly rich court, not just in glamour, but in protocol, backstabbing and politicking as well.
The court is one place in which 29 year-old Charles has no interest. Alas, that is the very place he must visit. The school where he teaches, the Jesuit College of Louis le Grand, is gifting a religious relic to the devout Madame de Maintenon, the King's unofficial second wife. It is a blatant attempt to gain her favor, or at least abate her wrath. Père la Chaise, the King's Jesuit Confessor, had counseled Louis against marriage to de Maintenon, and she is not about to forget it.
So Charles accompanies Jouvancy, an elder priest, to Versailles, where the court has removed for the summer. It's supposed to be a quick trip, in and out. But their first night, a man despised by everybody has a mysterious fall down a staircase, conveniently breaking his neck. One of the King's illegitimate daughters is bucking her arranged marriage, which is practically treason. And then Jouvancy gets a stomach ailment, as do several others, and whispers of "poison" reverberate through the palace.
La Chaise wishes Charles to remain at Versailles a couple more days to help him protect the girl and the King. Jouvancy doesn't see what Charles can do: " 'I strongly object. You need an older man for this. You told me yourself how this girl behaves. And Maître du Luc is not only young and well favored, he is a mere scholastic. He should not be tangled in these matters.'
Charles chewed his bread and tried to look as mere as possible."
But stay he does, trying to keep his calm when there's yet another murder.
This is the 3rd in Judith Rock's Charles du Luc mystery series, and the first I've read. I am a fan of the well-researched historical mystery, and "A Plague of Lies" certainly fits the bill. Interesting historical background and tidbits abound. For example, Charles is astounded when he, la Chaise and Jouvancy stop as a man with a baton of office walks by, followed by servants holding covered silver dishes. Not only are they required to uncover their heads and bow as the parade passes, but they must say reverently, "The king's dinner". Why? Because, as Jouvancy explains to Charles, "It is soon to be part of the king."
This is a character-driven mystery, leavened with great historical detail. Highly recommended!

Mystery Reading At Its Best!
By Janet K. Sanders
I was totally engrossed in all that A Plague of Lies has to offer--riveting, complex plot, rich character development and interaction, historical and cultural details of the 17th century that are an education in themselves, and the magnificent setting of King Louis XIV's court. Images of Versailles from a trip 38 years ago came flooding back! I could just picture Charles agog at life in the Palace. The intrigue that enveloped our hero wrapped me up too and I could NOT put the book down. Judith Rock is sharing her expertise and talent in just the right genre, and I'll be looking forward in anticipation for another great read with #4.

Blindingly Dazzling Depiction of Court Life
By Linda Jo Lockner
In this, the third book of the Charles du Luc series of historical mysteries, Judith Rock braids history and mystery into a coif befitting a courtier. The setting is 17th Century Versailles, and court life of "Sun King," Louis XIV, is blindingly dazzling, compared with the monochrome walls of the College of Louis le Grand of Paris.
Ms. Rock provides many fascinating and obscure details of the "Society of Jesus" and their advancement of theater, music and dance. Charles du Luc, a worldly Jesuit trainee, is a fictional but believable character moving with tact and finesse in search of answers. A keen intellect and a sense of humor enables him to "get to the bottom" of the mystery, and the journey is delightful for the reader.
Of the trio of Judith Rock's Jesuit mysteries, this volume is the most engaging. I look forward to reading the next adventure, The "Whispering of Bones."
