Poorly written and difficult to read

This book is written largely by European experts on Cellulite. There is much to learn and good referencing but the language is poor and difficult to read. Many of the statements and recommendations are difficult to evaluate in view of the variety of treatments and the lack of substantive clinical research.

After slogging through, it is still difficult to judge the appropriate management of this condition.

How and why rebel entrepreneurs "create the real growth drivers of an economy"

Rebels are iconoclasts, mavericks, outliers, etc. By nature, their thinking and initiatives are unconventional, unorthodox, and quite often disruptive as they challenge what (in Leading Change) James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." In business, the term "rebel entrepreneur" is a redundancy. In this book, Jonathan Moules focuses on a number of people who have demonstrated that "acting in a way that does not follow the crowd can be a better way of managing your business if you really want to grow bigger and faster - what I call being a rebel entrepreneur."

Moules suggests that rebel entrepreneurs tend NOT to

o Seek bank loans for financing ("Funding is for fools: The case for bootstrapping.")
o Innovate; rather, they imitate [Note: My own opinion is that great entrepreneurs do both.]
o Be a hero
o Pay "the high cost of success"
o Get hung up on the business plan
o Downsize their way through difficult times
o Waste their time selling [Note: My own opinion is that great entrepreneurs avoid wasting anything but are NOT risk averse.]
o View setbacks as failures if valuable lessons are learned from them

Moules devotes a separate chapter to each of these eight. For example, Chapter 01: "Funding is for fools" ("The case for bootstrapping.") As he explains, "The topics I have chosen for this book reflect the breadth of issues an entrepreneur has to consider when building a company [or department, business unit, wholly-owned subsidiary, or division]. Each is a journey through tips I have picked up during six years of writing about entrepreneurship in the Financial Times."

Consider these remarks by Jack Welch, shared during a GE annual meeting years ago when he explained the reasons why he admired entrepreneurial companies:

"For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy."

There is much to be said for rejecting or re-writing the "business "rule book" to which the subtitle of Moules's book refers if (HUGE "if") those rules are irrelevant to the needs, interests, values, resources, and strategic objectives of the given enterprise. However, even entrepreneurs (and especially, rebel entrepreneurs) will agree that several rules still have significant value. For example

o There is no business without customers
o Waste (of anything) is evil
o "Potential" means "you ain't done it yet" (Darrell Royal)
o "Vision without execution is hallucination." (Thomas Edison)
o "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." (Peter Drucker)
o "Take great care of your people, they will take great care of your customers, and your customers will then take great care of your investors." (Herb Kelleher)

There are no head-snapping revelations in this book, nor does Moules make any such claim. Rather, citing dozens of real-world examples to illustrate key points, he offers a wealth of information, insights, and counsel that have substantial practical value. For whom did he write this book? Probably not for rebel entrepreneurs but surely for those who aspire to "build a better company" or "have a go at chasing that idea that [they] have nurtured for an enterprise." I also recommend this book to those who are preparing for a business career or have only recently embarked on one as well as to middle managers in large organizations. Although they may never launch a new company, they can certainly apply what they learn from Jonathan Moules to drive the growth of their careers.

This was an incredibility great and useful book. The tips and advice in it are amazing and things that when you read them, you say, "Wow, that makes total sense!" Even if you are not an entrepreneur, it can help you with jobs like sales, account reps, telemarketers, and just about anyone who wants a new outlook on business. If you are starting your own company or even already in business, you have to read this book. Just a great book and a must read.

I read the "1,000 Gifts" book three times, so thought the devotional might be too familiar. I was wrong ~ each day that I read, I am again moved to a place of gratitude and grace, changing my perspective on whatever challenges I might be facing.

Draw Closer to His Grace

I read Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Life Fully Right Where You Are, about a year and a half ago. This best seller introduces readers to a word, Eucharisteo and a philosophy of living in light of the grace of God, as it says, right where you are. This idea of giving thanks always and living in the awareness of the brevity and fragility of life with joy is the theme of One Thousand Gifts. It inspired me to start counting along with a whole community of others who were counting their gifts to 1000 and more. When I was contacted about receiving the devotional One Thousand Gifts: Reflections On Finding Every Day Graces, which is based on the book, I was thrilled to have the daily refresher from this humble, much loved author. If you are not familiar with Ann Voskamp's writing, she shares her child filled, Canadian farmer's wife life at her blog called A Holy Experience. Considered one of the most influential Christian women of our day, Ann writes about giving thanks in the sometimes harsh realities of daily life.

What I love most about this book is that the length of the 60 individual devotional readings are not to short or long but just the right amount. Ann has a writing style that takes a bit of grasping. Tender and beautiful, it can be like catching glimpses of deep truths while gasping for air. She does not always follow straightforward sentence structure, which can leave you feeling, at times inspired and deeply moved, but at other times slightly exasperated! Her heart is poured out on paper and her courage shared is powerful. She shares with a gentle graciousness, and honesty that is hard to describe unless you read her for yourself.

Each devotion begins with a scripture, continues in Ann's unique, in the moment, voice which brings you up close to the grace of God: "Gratitude is not only the memories of our heart; gratitude is a memory of God's heart and to thank is to remember God."
"This is the crux of Christianity: to remember and give thanks, eucharisteo."
These are very much like her blog posts (possibly some portions are from posts?) but edited down to a very manageable daily portion. Each devotion is titled for a different grace: Humble Grace, Dark Grace, Small Grace, Wedded Grace, Standing Grace. As she herself believes, ALL is grace. Each devotional thought ends with a brief, heartfelt prayer, and a few lines for you to add your own thoughts, prayers of graces.
The first part of the book is reserved for these devotions but the second half (pages 205-245) are for you to personalize and begin counting "1000 Ways He Loves You..." Included are some quotes and the numbering of 1 to 1000. This makes this devotional/journal a great launching pad for you if you have not started listing your "gifts", but also makes for a great gift. The book itself is beautifully covered with a bird in hand pictured and includes a pretty blue ribbon to keep your place.

A gift for you or a friend. For those who enjoy Ann's Blog and book already, you won' be disappointed, but thoroughly blessed with this treasure. This is a lovely devotional.

David Fiddimore was born in 1944 in Yorkshire and is married with two children. About the Author
R. K. Narayan (1906–2001) was one of the most prominent Indian novelists of the twentieth century. Most of his stories are set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi, a place that Narayan populated with numerous characters. He was the recipient of many awards for his work including the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, India's highest literary honor. In 1980 he was awarded the AC Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature, of which he was an honorary member and in 1982 he was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Savitri keeps a good home for her husband and three children. With an eye on the family finances, she keeps a rein on the cook's natural extravagance. But she makes sure her son eats well, even though he is more concerned with cricket and with electric lights. She brushes her daughters' hair every day.

Ramani, her husband, bullies her with his complaints: every day the food is served too late or too early, the portion is too small or too large, the children are too noisy or too quiet.

Ramani never hits Savitri, he even occasionally has a kind word for her, but from time to time Savitri can't cope and seeks refuge in a room where she rests lying on the floor, facing a wall in the dark. When her daughters come for her, without moving she tells the cook to give them something to eat. She eventually comes out of her mood and returns to her life.

But now on many evenings, her husband comes home late from the office. Ramani has a mistress, and Savitri won't have it. She leaves him. She leaves with only the sari she is wearing, taking no food with her, no jewels. Nothing that belongs to that man.

She tries to drown herself. She tries to work while accepting no charity at all. She tries to repay her debts. Will she find the strength to do act? Or will she let opportunity pass her by?

More than in his other novels, Narayan deals here with right and wrong. Usually, his characters just get on with their lives; the world and their dreams might not have a meaning but that is only because there is something silly about expecting the world to have a tailor-made meaning.

Here, Narayan explores what happens when we do nothing, when we do *not* get on with the business of living our lives, when we do *not* actively care for what happens, or when we have the opportunity to return a kindness and fail to do so. Failing to act is wrong.

Dark Room

I was so overcome by this book. This is the first works I have read by Narayan and I was thoroughly pleased. What makes it so well written is the reality with which Narayan captures the culture of India and defines the roles that governed marriages in the 1930's. I must admit he is not too far off base in depicting marriage arrangements and the struggles of women in the 21st century. At times I was disappointed with its realism, the speech, the actions of the characters. It was all too familiar. A powerful and honest portrayal of how husbands and wives act in marriage.

A Dark Light Shined on a Marriage

This is Narayan's third published work. Once again it is set in his famous fictional world of Malgudi. This work is the most "adult" of the three, discussing serious issues like relations between husband and wife & men and women, raising children, work, (ir)religion, and even petty crime. Everything has a dark cast and much of the activity happens at night. For example, the wife has had two miscarriages. This short novel, really almost a shortish novella, has two parts. The first focuses on a wealthy husband who hires a woman at his office and then who becomes infatuated with her, neglecting his wife of about 15 years to spend time with her. The second part focuses on the neglected wife who leaves home and winds up working in a temple to survive. Their three children are important motivators in each part. The title of the story refers to a part of their house where the wife, who battles serious depression at times, goes when she is depressed. So for her both the room and her mood are dark, as is the overall feel of the work. I found the later part of the first half a bit of a slog, almost giving up on the work. But I'm glad I didn't as I couldn't put the second part down. I had to know what happened to the wife. But with most of his works, Narayan really doesn't care whether the reader gets closure on the characters and their life issues. He chooses to end the book how and when he wants. So don't expect an all-encompassing wrap up that will give strong clues as to the definitive long-term outcome for these characters. The events are as they are and the interactions between husband and wife remain raw, especially for the times.

This work is not for anyone expecting Narayan to continue the lighter, more humorous looks at Indian life in the 1930s as show in his first two novels, Swami & Friends and The Bachelor of Arts. Narayan, born 1906, was 32 when this was published in 1938. He married in 1933 to a 15-year-old girl and his father had died in 1937. (The darkness in the book was mirrored in his life in 1939 when his wife died.) But as Graham Greene wrote, anyone who reads Narayan's works centered on Malgudi comes to have an understanding, in a way that only a series of novels can bring out, of how the "average" Indian lived and how their world evolved over the course of about 50 years from British-controlled colonialism to independence.
