Krull's forte is to connect what readers know with what they are learning. She tells them that Franklin was a "superb networker," making connections with the best-known thinkers of his day. Franklin astonishes

In the latest installment in her award winning Giants of Science series, Krull presents a vibrant portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Moving beyond the quaint image of him flying a kite in the rain, Krull focuses on his astonishing scientific career. Amazingly innovative, jaw-droppingly philanthropic and determined to be useful, Franklin transformed his city, his country and the world. Krull lays out his accomplishments, framing them within his historical context, pointing out how his scientific fame enhanced his political effectiveness. Quirky pen and ink illustrations accentuate Franklin’s iconoclastic nature. Franklin emerges, not without flaws, but fully human, determinately accomplished, curious and thoughtfully rational. Sources, related websites and an index are included. Pair with Freedman’s Becoming Ben Franklin (Holiday House, 2013) for a complete portrait of the remarkable man.

Kim Law wrote her first story, “The Gigantic Talking Raisin,” in elementary school. Although it was never published, it was enough to whet her appetite for a career in writing. Voted Bookworm and Most Likely to Succeed in high school, she went on to earn a college degree in mathematics. Easy reading contemporary romance

Lee Ann London has been raising her sister Stephanie's twin girls since they were born. When the surgeon delivered them - prematurely, by cesarean section - he found her laced with cancer. Six days later, she died - leaving her twins for Lee Ann to raise.

There hasn't been a single word or any kind of support from Cody as Lee Ann raised the girls as her own. She has also nurtured her hatred of her ex-boyfriend for thirteen years; she doesn't want anything to do with him. But he is the girls' father - they are his children too.
Sugar Springs is a small town. Cody quickly learns that Lee Ann has twin daughters. While Lee Ann makes an effort to keep out of his way, Cody seeks her out. They both realize that they still react to each other, but Lee Ann is fighting her attraction and Cody has no idea about being a father - but he wants to try.
This story of how they try to deal with each other at arm's length while both distrust each other keeps the reader involved. You want to know how they work out their problems - this is a romance, after all - you know they will. But Ms Law throws enough obstacles in their path to stymie almost any romance.

Inconsistent

The previous reviews have given an idea about the story and the style. This is a small-town romance and quite sweet. The level of curiosity in the town is actually pretty high, even for this type of novel. As soon as Lee Ann moves, someone calls her mother to comment. It did not make me want to live in Sugar Springs ;-)

A couple of things bothered me. It is fraternal twins which run in families, not identical twins, and certainly not on the father's side. Just a small detail, but annoying.

At the start of the book, Lee Ann seems to say that Reba was not a particularly good mother and yet we see her as a good grandmother, helping out and generally supporting the girls. I can't imagine how a mother like Reba and a sister like Lee Ann could have Stephanie, and either I didn't hear it, (I listened in audio version) or there was not much explanation on who Stephanie's father was or what happened to him, as she was Lee Ann's half-sister. I felt as if there was something missing in the story. Either the part about Reba not being a good mother should have been edited out, or it should have been explained.

I really felt that too much time was spent going over and over the same discussions and too much time either in Lee Ann or Cody's heads. It is a shame, because I liked the family set-up, the depiction of the two girls and life in the town when they were not spying on each other.

Sweet Small Town Romance

Lee Ann London had big dreams as a teenager that all got torn away on the day she came home and found out that the love of her life had just slept with her half-sister. Her sister turns up pregnant, and then dies of cancer almost immediately after giving birth to twin girls, so instead of going off to college and realizing her dreams, Lee Ann stays in Sugar Springs to raise the girls. Thirteen years later, her well-ordered world turns upside down when Cody Dalton, the girls' father, comes back to fill in for the town veterinarian when she goes on maternity leave.

Believing Cody knew all about the girls and refused to step up as their father, Lee Ann isn't about to just let him into their lives until he proves himself. She also isn't willing to just forgive and forget that he slept with her sister when he was supposedly in love with her. Of course, Cody finds out the truth before Lee Ann has a chance to tell him, and they all suffer some angst. I'm not a fan of stories wherein the conflict could be solved in a single conversation if the characters would just TALK to each other, but the whole secret baby situation wasn't dragged out as long as I feared it would be and the story actually moved past it rather quickly. Instead, it deals with Cody getting to know his girls and having a few stumbles as a father, while he and Lee Ann work at getting over his mistakes in the past. The book does have a few issues with timing, and there are some important conversations that Lee Ann and Cody put off for flimsy reasons that made it obvious the author was just trying to string the reader along...which became too long. Ditto on the sex scene, which didn't quite fit with the personalities of the characters and felt as if it was pulled from a pile of stock sex scenes somewhere. The resolution got unnecessarily convoluted, as well, and painted Cody in a very weak light when instead he should have come through with shining colors, but this is an unfortunate trend I have seen in a lot of romances of late, so someone must like it.

On the whole, though, this was a very decent, well-written modern romance with well-rounded characters. I wanted to see them work through their problems and have the happily ever after they deserved.

About the Author

Tony Kenedy is Vice President of Development at Trigen, Ltd in London, U.K. Dr. Kennedy, a Medical Research Council Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The School of Pharmacy, London University, U.K., was awarded his Ph.D. by London University, U.K. and was previously the Global Head of Project Management at Roche, Switzerland. He was the editor of the first edition of Pharmaceutical Project Management which was published by Marcel Dekker in 1998, and his career has been devoted to the discovery and development of novel drugs while working in large pharmaceutical and small biotech companies. Dr. Kennedy has directed global drug development teams in several therapeutic areas including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, infectious disease, rheumatology and oncology, and led the Roche-Gilead joint development team that took the flu antiviral Tamiflu to registration three years after the discovery of the molecule.

The latest Scrapbooking Mystery is a non-stop ride of cozy mystery fun!

Owner of the scrapbook shop, Memory Mine, Carmela Bertrand is minding her own business when she becomes knee-deep in murder in the latest installment in the Scrapbooking mysteries by Laura Childs.

Carmela is getting ready for her tv interview with KBEZ-TV's Kimber Breeze. When she goes to the balcony (where the interview is to take place) she finds Kimber strangled and hanging by a cord. Despite being warned not to get involved by her boyfriend, Homicide Detective Edgar Babcock, Carmela finds herself drawn into the investigation. Especially when she starts to receive postcards from the dead Kimber.

I'm not a scrapbooker, but I do love the Scrapbooking mysteries by Laura Childs. With the clever and also amusing Carmela and Ava investigating, she always draws me into a non-stop mystery. Postcards from the Dead was no exception.

On the backdrop of Mardi Gras and the New Orleans, I was drawn into the mystery from the very first page and I absolutely couldn't put it down. Just when I thought I had the mystery solved, Laura Childs threwh a curveball and I was left clueless!

I absolutely can't get enough of this series and plan to re-read some of the earlier books while I wait for the next book in the series. Yes, yes they are that good! If you like your crafty cozies I thoroughly encourage you to try this series.

New Orleans, Murder and Mayhem, Oh My

New Orleans and Mardi Gras have long since been the setting for murder mysteries, but author Laura Childs puts a different spin on the concept with amateur sleuth Carmela Bertrand and POSTCARDS FROM THE DEAD.

Carmela, owner of Memory Mine Scrapbooking, is awaiting her turn in the camera spotlight when something goes terrible wrong. KBEZ-TV reporter Kimber Breeze is conducting interviews on the fourth floor balcony of a hotel in the French Quarter overlooking the Mardi Gras parade below.

Just as she's about to be interviewed, Carmela sees Kimber's terrified face in the waiting room's live feed monitor. When she rushes out onto the tiny balcony, Carmela finds Kimber's lifeless body dangling by a cord over the floats below.

Although her boyfriend, Homicide Detective Edgar Babcock, tells her not to get involved, Carmela can't help herself. When she begins receiving unnerving postcards apparently from the dead reporter, Carmela enlists the help of her best friend Ava Gruiex to uncover the truth.

As Carmela and Ava search for the killer, they take the reader on a journey through New Orleans, its culture and its landscape. There is a nice blend of mystery, murder, mayhem, humor, a dabble of romance and even a second crime to solve. In addition, Childs incorporates friendship, loyalty and a bit of gossip involving the Scrapbooking gang.

With each new installment in this series, Childs continues to develop and enrich her characters. Following along with their progress enhances the reading experience making the characters more realistic.

Childs slowly pulls you in with each line. As she paints a picture with her words, she places the reader in the heart of the action with her characters. Before the reader realizes it, they're spellbound unable to put the book down not wanting to leave the scene for fear of what will happen next.

POSTCARDS FROM THE DEAD is the 10th installment in the Scrapbook Mystery series, but can be read alone. There are subtle references to prior events, but they are done in such a way as not to confuse or lose new readers. The book also offers delicious New Orleans recipes, Scrapbooking tips and a preview of the next installment in Childs' Cackleberry Club Mystery series, STAKE & EGGS, slated for release in December.

Scrapbooking doesn't have to be in your blood to enjoy this story, only the love of a good mystery.

A Compelling Murder and More

This was a compelling mystery for me. The murder was compelling in that the victim was an annoying creature from several novels back. The characters were compelling in that we enjoy our favorites and are introduced to some down-right creepy creatures. The sub-mystery was as exciting as the murder and then the recipes which I swear I could smell and taste in my mind compelled me to make out a grocery list.

Scrapbook shop owner, Carmela Bertrand and her best friend, Ava are awaiting Carmela's turn to be interviewed by the local television station from a suite overlooking the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans when a crash is heard. Carmela rushes out to the balcony where the reporter is and finds her hung over the balustrade.

No one especially liked television reporter, Kimber Breeze, but still... Then the post cards begin arriving to Carmela and they are sent from...Kimber? Carmela finds herself compelled to investigate although her boyfriend, Detective Babcock, strongly cautions against her involvement.

The pace of the mystery keeps this story going. I read it in almost one sitting, (I did have to stop to eat some "Spicy Red Beans and Rice." This series keeps getting stronger and I do enjoy reading it.

One of the best books available for psychopharmacology

Maudesly is my favorite psychopharmacology book. I suggested it to my students and they love it. I know it's pricey, but you can always buy an older version and still have the same information. Not much changes in the world of psychopharm! The most useful information in this book, in my opinion, are the QT interval drugs and how to prescribe for special populations - the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with medical issues. This information is often omitted from other books and this is what really sets this book above many others. Take a chance on this book, you wont regret it!

Informative, thorough, and comprehensive. A must have for psychiatric nurse practitioner students and newly graduated psychiatric nurse practitioners. This book is based in the UK, so American providers take heed as there are some minute practice differences.

Basic Writings of Freud by Brill

This is an excellent work for Freud enthusiasts. The work discusses the theoretical underpinnings for behavioral characteristics popularized by Freud. For instance, the proclivity to forget is related to a personal motivation to
suppress unpleasant memories. Dreams tend to depict unfulfilled wishes. Pain and disgust are more frequent aspects of dreams than pure pleasure. The author explains how childhood experiences both good and bad may resurface in our dreams. Our memory can be challenged to recall things long dormant. Night hallucinations can be due to perceived rejected sexual impulses.
Freud explains how seemingly contradictory thoughts can coexist side by side. The concept of psychological tension may be related to a displeasure or aversion. Freud discussed sexuality.
For instance, he noted that bisexual tendencies could be interpreted within the context of a female brain in a male body.
The book brings out many aspects of human behavior that we rarely dwell on consciously. It is perfect for a class project in
science, psychology or medicine. Freud's theories tend to be very
complex. This work reduces some of the deepest complexities to
simple English.Finally, the book helps us to understand the dynamics of why we behave as we do. This book explains important strategies to the classic flight/fight phenomena and accomodative
strategies aimed at reducing behavioral tensions/conflicts.

A Good Introduction and Reference

The Brill translation of the basic early writings of Sigmund Freud, although arguably not the most accurate translation, provides a good introduction to Freud's early work. We can read the critics and followers, yet sometimes we just have to go back to Freud's actual work. I keep my copy handy for reference and review.

Also included is a fine introduction by translator A. A. Brill, who explains that the selections are intended to give the reader a feel for Freud's thought, especially with regard to wit, dreams, and the unconscious.
