The Good Woman (A Brennan Sisters Novel Book 1), by Jane Porter

Is it possible to leave it all behind?

The firstborn of a large Irish-American family, Meg Brennan Roberts is a successful publicist, faithful wife, and doting mother who prides herself on always making the right decisions. But years of being “the good woman” have taken a toll and though her winery career thrives, Meg feels burned out and empty, and more disconnected than ever from her increasingly distant husband. Lonely and disheartened, she attends the London Wine Fair with her boss, ruggedly handsome vintner, Chad Hallahan. It’s here, alone together in an exotic city, far from “real” life, that Chad confesses his long-standing desire for Meg.

Overwhelmed, flattered, and desperately confused, Meg returns home, only to suddenly question every choice she’s ever made, especially that of her marriage. For Meg, something’s got to give, and for once in her life she flees her responsibilities—but with consequences as reckless and irreversible as they are liberating. Now she must decide whether being the person everyone needs is worth losing the woman she was meant to be.

Jane Porter Takes Her Writing To The Next Level
By Amazon Customer
Could. Not. Put. This. Down.

I read this in one sitting.

In this first book about the Brennan sisters, Jane Porter delves deep into what it is like to be a modern woman, a mother, a wife, a sister, and explores what happens when you examine your past choices and perhaps make some unwise new ones. As the oldest sister Meg slowly comes undone from the pressure of creating and keeping the perfect life, we see the impact her choices have on not only her marriage and her kids, but the dynamic between her sisters and her parents.

I'm a huge fan of Jane Porter's books and have read all of her non-category novels, plus some of the category ones. I especially love how she explores issues and characters from different perspectives and shows the complexities of human life. Things are not black and white in a Porter book, they are multiple shades of gray and often explode into technicolor kaleidoscopic messiness, just like real life.

In THE GOOD WOMAN, Porter does all of the above exceptionally well by showing events from multiple points of view. True family dynamic comes to life as the sisters and their parents recollect and judge past and present events. The author shows how the stories we tell ourselves are only that, our stories. Our parents and siblings who were at every event in our lives, have a completely different interpretation of those events and therefor completely different emotional scars. The same is true for our spouses.

This sounds very dire, but remember it's a Jane Porter book so you are going to cry as you relate to the emotional upheaval of the Brennan family, but you are also going to do a lot of laughing as you recognize yourself and your family and your relationship with significant others in this fabulous book.

Marriage is hard work
By JerseyGirl Yvonne
"The Good Woman" is from Jane Porter's trilogy about the Brennan sisters. This book is about Meg Brennan Roberts the oldest sister of four. Meg has a great life. Her husband is supportive of her and they are a successful couple who live in Petaluma, California in a 6000 square foot house with five acres. They are near to other neighbors but just far enough out that the family has privacy. Meg has three children, Gabi, JJ and Tessa who are enrolled in various activities that Meg makes sure she doesn't miss out on even though she has a PR job with a local, thriving vineyard.

Jack, Jane's husband is a very successful architect who travels almost constantly so there is very little time for Meg and their children. Meg craves some attention from her husband but lately he is a million miles away and she feels like they are losing their connection with one another. Since Jack seems to be incognito in their marriage, Meg begins to question their entire marriage and soon they are in crisis.

I loved this book and read into the wee hours. I have to say I did not like Meg's husband. Jack seemed cold and uncaring to me. He seems to have no interest in Meg anymore and when they hit a very rough patch, I did not care for how he handled things with Meg and the children. I could not see any way that this book would have a happy ending but the author does bring some closure. To have a successful marriage is really hard work and this book delves into how to make marriage work and the ties that bind us.

I am reading the trilogy because this book was so good. Don't miss out.

Unlikable main character
By Catty
I was looking forward to this book based on the sister dynamics and great reviews on Amazon.

The pros: the writing was brisk and tense (so I did want to read what would happen next), the dynamics between the sisters was good, I liked the characters of the Hallahan brothers.

The cons: I really disliked the main character, Meg. Selfish. I didn't understand her motivations. Instead of talking to her husband about her marital concerns, she has an affair with a guy who really likes her, and she proceeds to break two hearts in the process. When given the opportunity to leave her unsatisfied marriage, she hangs on "for the family" like there was no other option -- I didn't like this message at all knowing plenty of happy divorced/step/mixed families. At least her husband had the balls to kick her out of the house... But then, kicked out, Meg goes to her dying mother's house instead of her single sister's large home - because nothing helps an sick mom like more stress . In fact, I thought all the sisters should have expressed at least as much concern about their parents as they did about their love lives.

I guess we are all flawed...but except for being good at her job and taking care of things around the house, Meg seemed to "take" more than "give" from other people and that's what I disliked the most about her.
